NIGER STATE SECURES $650 MILLION INVESTMENT FROM EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURING COMPANY, JOHN DEERE

Niger State has attracted a $650 million investment from an agricultural manufacturing company, John Deere.
The investment includes the acquisition of 600 high-capacity tractors, 200 combine harvesters, 200 bulldozers, 200 excavators, and various other implements.
These will be utilised to prepare and develop up to 1 million hectares of land, equivalent to establishing 100 farm estates, each covering approximately 10,000 hectares.

US-based autonomous mobility company, B***o, has closed a $24 million Series B funding round led by growth equity firm Catalyst Investors and Translink Capital, with returning investors, S2G Ventures, Toyota Ventures, F-Prime Capital, and Cibus Capital. As part of the funding, Brian Rich, managing partner with Catalyst Investors, and Kaz Kikuchi from Translink Capital, will join the company’s Board.

Biotech startup, UniFAHS, has secured over $1.4 million in a seed funding round led by A2D Ventures and supported by Asian Development Bank Ventures (ADB Ventures) and InnoSpace (Thailand).

UniFAHS is a biotechnology company which specialises in phage technology for sustainable agriculture and food safety. According to studies, phage technology involves the use of bacteriophage to control and detect bacterial pathogens. UniFAHS, through the use of such technology, uses its patented phage solutions as an alternative solution to antimicrobial resistance, thereby creating a more sustainable environment and improving food security and general well-being.

As we have successfully segued from 2023 into 2024, it is important for farmers, agriprenuers, and agriculturists to reflect on the previous year; the successes and failures they’ve had in their various farm operations; crops cultivated, livestock raised, income, profit and loss, and technology adoptions that helped improved productivity.

Some of these tools helped with weather forecasting, predicting rainfall to inform farmers of the best time to cultivate crops. Other farm management tools assisted with record keeping, documenting daily farming, financial operations, and the like.

The 28th edition of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, also referred to as the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), was held at Expo City, Dubai, United Arab Emirates from 30th November to 13th December, 2023.

The conference is the world’s largest decision-making body on climate issues and certainly one of the largest international meetings of the United Nations. This year’s conference took a more audacious stride in addressing the global effects of climate change while also putting more clearly in the limelight the most vulnerable communities and nations.

11 Agritech Startups Enhancing Food Production with Technology in Nigeria

1. Soilless FarmLab
Soilless Farm Labs is a food-tech startup founded in 2019 by Samson Ogbole in the capital city of Ogun state, Abeokuta. Soilless FarmLabs (a trademarked name for Eupepsia Place) practices smart agriculture by utilising greenhouses to produce food, particularly crops such as leafy vegetables, bell peppers, cabbages, and lettuce, with hydroponics and aquaponics systems.

2. BIC Farms Concept
Founded by Adebowale Onafowora in December 2019, BIC Farms concept is an agritech startup which operates with Responsive Dip Irrigation Technology, adopted from a Kenyan startup called RDI.

3. Thrive Agric
Thrive Agric provides support for farmers and farming communities by employing agricultural technology solutions like farm monitoring/mapping to measure the size of a farm and inspect the viability of farmland, especially its soil fertility, texture, and proximity to a water source.

4. Hello Tractor
Founded in 2014 by Kenyan, Jehiel Oliver, Hello Tractor is an agritech startup leveraging technology to connect smallholder farmers with tractors and other farm machinery needed for farming operations.

5. Crop2Cash
Crop2Cash provides financial solutions to smallholder farmers in Nigeria. The Ibadan-based startup was founded by Michael Ogundare, Emem Essien, and Seyi Alabi in December 2018.

6. Agricorp
Agricorp is an agritech startup in Nigeria that leverages cutting-edge technology to produce quality poultry products and spices. They specialise in the production of organic broiler chicken and spices like ginger, chilli pepper, and onion.

7. Releaf
Releaf focuses on developing proprietary hardware and software solutions to make African farmers and food factories more efficient and profitable.

8. Farmcrowdy
Farmcrowdy is an agritech startup solving the inefficiencies in the food value chain. Their business model connects smallholder farmers and aggregators to input and farm produce respectively.

9. Hervest
Techcabal
Hervest is a fintech startup providing financial support to women with a focus on improving the lives of rural smallholder female farmers in Africa.

10. Vendease
Vendease was founded in 2019 by four friends; Tunde Kara, Wale Oyepeju, Olumide Fayakin and Gatumi Aliyu, who want to automate the food procurement business in Nigeria.

11. Agritech Digest
Agritech Digest is an agritech startup enhancing the agricultural media space. In a bid to ensure massive coverage of everything happening in the agricultural sector, Agritech Digest was born.

Nature-based carbon credits solutions provider, ReSeed, announces partnership with Nigerian-based NGO, Centre for Renewable Energy and Action on Climate Change (CREACC-NG), to bring carbon credits directly from Nigerian smallholder farmers to market.

The announcement was made on stage at the Nigerian Pavilion on Saturday, December 9th, 2023, at the COP28 in Dubai, UAE. The initiative has been approved by the Nigerian National Council on Climate Change, an officially recognised body by the Paris Climate Accord.

Food will be produced in ways that will have to address the current challenges experienced in food production and farming today. These challenges, occasioned by low agricultural productivity in developing nations, the global effect of climate change, infrastructural deficits, weak technology inclusion in farming, and poor biological varieties among others, will lead the charge on how food will be grown in 2050. Furthermore, realising ‘zero hunger’ in the light of these challenges coupled with the growing population will be one of the greatest hurdles of the century to be crossed.

EcoBalance Global, a US-based carbon reduction and storage programme, has partnered with Kazbeef, a subsidiary of Kusto Group, and rTek, a Rakurs Consulting Group company, to launch the first-ever pilot ranch outside of the United States.

The pilot was launched at the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 28) in Dubai, UAE, following a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by all parties. The partnership will see the delivery of the first-of-its-kind climate-smart beef, using carbon insets supported by 3rd party validation and blockchain technology. Among the goals of this launch is to ensure that livestock production can achieve a net-zero solution with carbon emissions.
