Surveillance
This is quite an old-school surveillance camera for what is essentially a futuristic setting, but it fits with the dystopian aesthetic. Parker and the citizens of the dome are watched everywhere they go by the System. Why? To make sure they never show any signs of unhappiness of course. I’m loving the Big Brother /1984 references.

The dome
Many versions of the dome-covered city exist but I especially like this one which shows the inside with its parks, mix of modern and older buildings and the sky and hills beyond.
How did you picture it while listening? Did you know that there are more than 10 domed mega-cities across the new UK and they are all different?

Underground bunker
Another secret location for Parker, Sid and Ben is an underground bunker. Perfect for hiding out from Enforcers and seeing out the terrible winters now climate change has taken hold.
Little bit of sound design trivia - the underground bunker was one of the settings I had the most trouble with. I had the idea of a kind of damp, dank atmosphere with a dripping ‘something’, but soon realised that the drip became really irritating. Also there was a generator that gave a nice background buzz, giving this location its own sound atmos, but again, too much and it’s annoying, too little and what’s the point? As ever, it’s about establishing it early, then dropping it out as the characters get into the scene. Explaining this to your sound designer isn’t always easy though.

Smallholding
All kinds of buildings have been taken back by nature outside the dome - the world that was left behind. Is this how you pictured Sid’s small farm, where he grows food and keeps his animals? I like how it’s inside some kind of protected structure and has its own little dome 😊

Lookout tower
With the wind and the rain howling around them, Parker and Sid climb to the top of a lookout tower. Episode 4 is one of my personal favourites - I love the scene where Sid tells Parker the history of the days before the building of the domes. It’s also kind of timely with everything happening today… 😬

Abandoned train
Outside the dome, the world has been reclaimed by nature. Parker, Sid and Ben spend time in an abandoned train carriage that looks very much like this. Inside they have everything they need - a kitchen, toilets (kind of), seats they can made into beds.
I’m fascinated by abandoned places - there will be more great locations in Season 2!

The Dome
Well, the dome looks nothing like this lol 😂 but this is an impression of it, and it’s interesting how with audio fiction you make up your own images in your head. I imagine it to have a force field surface keeping the elements out (and everyone in) and it goes imperfectly from hill to river, road to mountain.
How do you imagine Parker’s dome when you listen to Everyone’s Happy?
Don’t we all feel like this sometimes? Parker is the voice of everyone who has ever had to fake being ok. That’s the power of fiction, of great stores, and it’s why I write.
What can I say? To hit this number just before we drop the final episode in the first season is incredible! Thank you so much for making it happen 🤩
