Back Pain Myth #5: “You can injure yourself further if you exercise when in pain”

Exercise is key to strengthen your body and preventing further injury.

Physical therapy can be a great way to rehabilitation.

And, you don’t have to do any extreme exercises.

If you’re in pain, it’s best do light to moderate exercises to improve blood and oxygen flow to your muscles.

The benefits of exercise don’t just stop at the physical level — exercising is known to boost your mood and is considered a legitimate treatment for depression, which studies have found that people who suffer from chronic pain also suffer from anxiety and depression.

With so many different types of workouts available to us today, just about anyone can find something they love and will stick to.

This goes a long way in boosting both your mental health and your physical health. Your doctor will be able to point you in the direction toward light to moderate exercises to start you off with.

Back Pain Myth 4: “Pain medication can fix your pain”
This may be the biggest myth of all.

Pain medications simply mask your symptoms; they don’t treat the root cause of your pain.

That’s why it’s important to address the cause of the pain whenever possible to help improve your function rather than just how you feel.

Are you able to move better? What seems to be hurting most? Can you leave the house without pain?

These are more important questions about function.

You must ask yourself, “What else am I doing to get better?”

Have you been following doctor’s orders and doing anything physical? Have you been losing weight if you’re suffering from weight-related joint pain or back pain?

Pain medications will not solve the problem for you entirely. It’s important to understand why you’re in pain, and what solutions can tackle the root cause.

Back Pain Myth #3: “Pain is mostly an emotional or psychological problem. “

Pain is a complex problem, but It’s not just in your head. If you feel pain there is a physical reason for the pain.

Furthermore, pain can terribly effect someone’s emotional and mental state of mind, and it can worsen a person’s perception of pain.

There are many people who endure their own pain every day. It is an invisible problem that others can't see, but that doesn't mean it's all in your head

Therefore, be sure to reach out to a medical professional to identify and address psychological issues that may be affecting your experience with pain.

Back Pain Myth #2: Pain is a natural side effect of aging.
Sometimes age can impact the severity of pain, but there’s a difference between some nuisance pain from chronic pain.

Chronic pain can be a result of an illness or injury and is also linked to back pain, cancer, arthritis, headache and nerve pain.

Chronic pain is common after age 65, and painful conditions such as degenerative joint disease (also known as osteoarthritis) increase with age.

The prevalence of pain in nursing home residents is estimated at 45–83%.

Although pain is common in older nursing home residents, it is not inevitable. More important, it does not have to be tolerated—effective treatments are available

Back Pain Myth #1: “I Just Have to Live with the Pain”

You may have experienced pain for a long time, but it doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it.

There are countless options for pain relief. They include relaxation techniques, exercise, physical therapy, over-the-counter and prescription medications, surgery, injections (into muscle, joints or your back), and complementary treatments such as acupuncture and massage.

You may not always be able to completely get rid of your pain, but you can use many techniques to help manage it much better.

#5 Daily Habit 😴💤

Another thing we cannot emphasize enough. Get some sleep! Sleep is so important for recovery.

Sleep is the time when your body heals and rejuvenates itself. It also levels out your hormones, like leptin and ghrelin, to help you wake up a brand new person and make it through the day.

Solid, restorative sleep is a really effective tool against chronic pain.

#4 Daily Habit 🥦

Increase your calcium and vitamin D intake.

Strong bones can help prevent osteoporosis. It’s one of the most common causes of back pain later in life, particularly for women. Keep the bones in your spine strong by consuming plenty of calcium and vitamin D.

Calcium is in:
* milk
* yogurt
* leafy greens
* Beans and lentils
* Almonds
* vitamin supplements

Vitamin D is in:
* fatty fish
* egg yolks
* Orange juice
* Mushrooms
* cheese

These are just a few sources of calcium and vitamin D that we like to add to our diet.

Please always consult your doctor before taking any supplements.

#3 Daily Habit

Stretch those muscles!

Standing, sitting, or lying down in one place for an extended amount of time isn’t healthy for your back.

Relieve the strain of the day whenever you can by getting up, walking around, and doing some simple stretches.

This will help improve circulation to your back. It can also ease any strains or aches that occur due to inactivity.

#2 Daily Habit 🧘‍♀️

Learn to relax!

It sounds so obvious, but few of us actually take the time to stop what we're doing and calm our minds.

Stress management techniques like deep breathing, meditation, and biofeedback relax your body, which helps ease pain.

Talk to your doctor to learn more. In the meantime, slow down, close your eyes … breathe in … breathe out.

#1 Daily Habit 🏃‍♀️

Exercise!

Your muscles need to be activated to prevent injury and also to strength your body.💪

Try to go for a walk every morning for 10-30 minutes. Once you get in the habit of walking, you can increase the time every week or every day. This is the simplest way to strengthen your body!
