Here’s more Project BlackGuard promo art ft. the team’s trigger happy maverick, Jonnie Staples. I love the entire BlackGuard team....I do. However, Jonnie is my favorite to draw because he IS me, to a degree. My approach to Staples was always how i play video games, which is: “skim through the controls manual, completely skip the mission brief, run in blind and just shoot anything that moves.”
THAT’S Jonnie Staples. Combine that with a set of morals that fluctuates with how much money he has in the bank, and you have a guy who you would NOT want coming to save your life. Who in the hell would even let him join a super hero team?😂

BlackGuard art ft. O.D.A.N! I remember the first time Jerrod(writer of BlackGuard) presented me with the idea of a ninja who calls himself ONE DOPE ASS NINJA(O.D.A.N), and with me being a sucker for a good acronym, I immediately loved it! I also love the contrast of the character...a ninja, who absolutely refuses to be quiet. It’s brilliant 😂

Throwback Thursday to two of my fave pieces of art I drew for the BlackGuard web comic. These were the covers for our “Psycho Therapy” arc. In this story, after the BlackGuard have seriously botched a mission(again), a psychiatrist(Dr. Cranium) is sent to help analyze the team in hopes of turning them into a functioning unit. However, in the process, the reckless heroes manage drive their Doc to brink of madness....and then, push him over. I think I enjoyed this story so much, because I love stories that examine the mind of an individual. We not only slowly see Dr. Cranium have a mental break down, we also dive into the minds of our “heroes” and discover what makes each team member tick.

From comics to animation! One of the cool things about working on “Project BlackGuard” has been seeing my character designs for our characters being modified for animation by our animator, . I specifically design characters as if they are going be used in animation. What that means is, making a design that is instantly recognized by it’s shapes and colors, while keeping the details SIMPLE. Think Mickey Mouse, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario, even Spider Man. It was cool to see that not much needed to be changed to keep the BlackGuard’s look for animation.

Here's another breakdown of how we animate a shot.
This is the first scene we animated for
There's many ways to approach a scene, and many ways to execute its completion. For this scene we continued to used a mix of frame by frame and puppet animation. We knew that Melanin would have minimal movement in this shot so we did a redraw of Mel's body on a separate layer. We had to do a redraw because this scene called for a "special pose" that was different from the pre-built OTS (over the shoulder) pose that we made for the rig. .
Then we brought in the OTS puppet head and placed it on top. The arms were on separate layers and animated frame by frame. We animated these frame by frame because we wanted to draw a smear effect when she smashes her fists together. Finally, her bangles and bandana were pre-built puppet elements that we placed on top after the rest of the animation had been completed.
