\\ Do You Even Know What You Look Like Online? \\

When I say "you", I'm referring to your company. And when I ask if you know what you look like, I mean do you know how your company is portrayed in the SERPs (search engine results pages)?

This exercise is taken from a presentation I did at the All Island Entrepreneurial Summit on Vancouver Island a couple years back.

Consider this a type of self-reflection for your business. Before you can begin thinking about all the marketing strategies and tactics that your company needs to be doing, it's a good idea to first understand how your company is portrayed online. After all, when someone sees an ad or mention of your company somewhere, it's highly likely that they google your company name to get more info before making a purchasing decision.

If you've been in business for a while and you've never searched for your company online before, I think you'll be surprised by what you find.

It's never a bad idea to see what others are seeing when they search for your business online.

To start, google your company name (search: company name OR company name + city) and make note of anything that stands out.

You'll want to scroll through at least the first 3 pages.

What you're looking for:
Your site should appear at the top of the SERPs. How does it look? Your site's title tag and meta description – do they include your main keywords and say what you do and make people want to click? Are sitelinks (i.e. links to internal pages shown under your main listing) showing up for your site?

Google My Business page. Does your GMB page show up on the right hand side? How does it look, is it claimed, verified and fully optimized? Is the category accurate? How are your reviews? Are you using every feature to it's full benefit - images, videos, products, services, Q&As, posts etc?

Are any other company's Google Ads triggered by your search? Is a competitor bidding on your brand?
Are there directories that show up with review ratings? How are the ratings? Take note of all the directories that you see listed in the SERPs (Yelp, TripAdvisor, YellowPages, BBB etc), what the rating is and what the description says.
Is all the company info correct on the listings that show up in the SERPs? Company name, address, phone number, website, descriptions etc

News. Is there any news - negative or positive that appears? If it's negative and you've done everything to remedy the situation offline, you can try to push the negative news down. If it's positive, have you shared the piece, pushed it out to your social media channels, reposted it to your site?

When you're scrolling through the SERPs, keep in mind that you're looking for ways to better how your company looks online. Keep an eye out for possible partnerships, backlink opportunities and referral partners.

Once you've gone through the first 3 pages of the search results, go back and start opening each listing (other than your own site) in a separate tab (hold control / command while clicking).

What you're looking for at this stage are ways you can improve each listing.
Is the information correct? Company name, address, phone number, website, description, hours, services etc
Is the page / listing fully optimized?
How are the reviews? Do you have (m)any?

Make a note to correct anything that needs correcting and come back to it.

This is such a simple exercise to do, but it's astounding how many companies have never performed a simple search online for their own company.

You can also do this same exercise for your personal name too!
