We received lightly-roasted oolong tea from 𝗚𝗨𝗔𝗡𝗥𝗜. The tea arrived in high-quality pyramid tea bags, which allow more convenient and faster brewing. We are grateful for being able to enjoy their fresh tea this year.

Granri's tea cultivar is Chin-Shin Oolong (also known as “Soft Branch Oolong). It is the cultivar popularly used to produce premium oolong tea. Granri's lightly-roasted oolong tea has an aromatic and sweet aftertaste. Their tea farm is located in Shanlinxi Forest in Nantou, Taiwan, and has been making Shanlinxi oolong tea for 30 years.

Taiwan Black Tea Lacquer Box with a Shinto Shrine and Mount Fuji Pattern
(1927-1945, Shōwa era 昭和)

I saw this beautiful lacquer box in the Ping-Lin Tea Museum (新北市坪林茶業博物館). The lacquer box is collected by 國立臺灣歷史博物館 National Museum of Taiwan History, with a pattern of a Shinto shrine, Mount Fuji, and a five-storied pagoda.

According to the information provided by the National Museum of Taiwan History, on the back of the lid, the words CHOICEST (tea grading terminology), FORMOSA BLACK TEA, GROWN IN MITSUI TEA GARDEN are printed. On the back of the box, MADE IN JAPAN and NET WEIGHT 1LB are printed.

During the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, the tea industry in Taiwan was heavily invested by the Japanese. Among them, Mitsui Tea Garden (三井茶園) was owned by Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and located in Kaizan Gun (海山郡) and Bunsan Gun (文山郡), New Taipei City and Taipei City nowadays. Mitsui & Co., Ltd is headquartered in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. Mitsui initially sold oolong tea and baozhong tea produced in Taiwan as the main products. In the Shōwa era, it eagerly promoted black tea as the main product.

Mitsui’s old factory is now a museum in Daxi, Taiwan, Daxi Tea Factory (大溪老茶廠).
