DAYS Recaps for the Week of September 27 – October 1st, 2021 -
Monday, September 27, 2021 :
In New Orleans, Ben tells Ciara he is afraid his baby will turn out like him — and he’s not trying to bring evil into the world. She holds him as he breaks down in tears. Ciara reminds her husband that he faced his demons and overcame them. She urges him to let her, and her love, help him face this now. Ben points out her love can’t change his DNA or what genes he passes down. Ciara counters it’s the way one is raised that makes the difference. She knows he will be the best father and it will make all the difference. Ciara also knows she won’t change his mind in one conversation. Right now, she just wants them to love each other. They kiss as they fall back on the blankets and pillows near the fire.
Asleep in bed, Ben dreams about their future. As Ben and Ciara celebrate their 10 year anniversary, their son reveals he strangled the nanny with “daddy’s necktie.” Ben jolts awake. When he says he doesn’t remember his dream, Ciara assures him everything will be okay.
Tripp comes over to Allie’s after work. She serves him dinner as they talk about Johnny’s movie. Allie informs her boyfriend Johnny wants to tell the story of how the devil possessed their grandmother. Tripp chokes on his drink. After hearing the story, he thinks there is a scientific explanation for everything that happened. Tripp finds evidence online to back up his argument. Allie understands his skepticism, but she trusts her Grandpa John. If he says Marlena was possessed, that’s good enough for her.
At the DiMera mansion, Chanel worries Johnny’s movie will literally tempt the devil to walk through the door. Tony walks in, startling Chanel. Johnny asks Tony to be a consultant on his movie since he was there and saw Marlena’s possession up close and personal. Tony corrects him. That wasn’t him. It was his evil cousin, Andre. Chanel whispers to herself, “White people are crazy,” when Tony recounts how he was stranded on an island during that time. He suggests Johnny talk with John and Marlena for a first-hand account. When Johnny says he tried and failed, his uncle opines that the past is often best left buried.
After Tony leaves the room, Chanel agrees that Johnny should drop the whole movie idea. Johnny declares he won’t give up on his film, but Chanel wants to talk about something else. They start making out. Johnny suggests they go upstairs. He has protection this time. Chanel grins as she tells him that’s not happening tonight. She wants to slow things down a bit. He suggests they watch more movies. Chanel agrees. She wants to just have fun with him before they end up in bed. Johnny is prepared to woo her. She can’t wait to be wined and dined by him. They kiss deeply. Chanel backs off to urge Johnny not to make his movie. “You’re playing with fire.”
Eli tries to reassure Julie at the hospital as she anxiously waits for word on Doug. Eli knows Marlena will get to the bottom of it. John calls Julie and offers to say a prayer in the chapel with her. After she hangs up, Julie continues to fret. Eli offers to check on Doug for her.
John arrives after Eli walks away. She shares her concern over Marlena’s behavior. John reassures her, but suggests they go say a prayer for both Marlena and Doug.
In Doug’s hospital room, MarDevil taunts the patient before picking up a pillow to smother him. Internally, Marlena cries out for the devil not to hurt Doug. Eli enters causing MarDevil to stop her deadly attack. “Marlena” calmly asks Eli to step outside so she can continue her conversation with Doug. A panicked Doug struggles to talk, but manages to say, “Don’t leave me. Please.” A concerned Eli suggests “Marlena” join Julie and John who are praying in the chapel. MarDevil reluctantly leaves.
MarDevil looks in the chapel to see John and Julie praying. She listens as John tells Julie his love and prayers brought Marlena back to them when she was possessed. It proved no matter what they face, they get through anything together. “Marlena” interrupts them. After Julie leaves, “Marlena” and John express their love.
Alone with Doug, Eli tries to make sense of what his step-grandfather is trying to tell him. Julie returns to Doug who struggles to get out any words about Marlena. Julie says they’ll talk in the morning.
Tuesday September 28, 2021 :
Philip surprises Chloe with a bouquet of flowers reminiscent of their high school days. Chloe’s touched. He points out it’s been 22 years since they met. She was the one who got away. However, he has learned from his mistakes and promises to take perfect care of their tree and of her. They kiss. When Brady’s name comes up, Philip declares he now knows his nephew wasn’t the one who was spying on him. It was Jake and Gabi. And he’ll make sure they regret playing him for a fool. Chloe makes him promise not to bad mouth Brady to her again. He obliges. She suggests Brady might be happy to help him bust Gabi and Jake. Philip doesn’t think he needs him. However, he’s going to wait until he’s ready to make his next move, which is stealing Gabi’s company.
Jake drops by John and Marlena’s place to see Brady. He asks how his talk with Victor about Philip and Gabi went. Brady wonders how Jake knows that he did talk to his grandfather. Perhaps he’s keeping tabs on him? Jake tries to smooth talk his way around it, but Brady suspects he’s angling for the CEO position at Titan. When Jake presses for more information, a wary Brady ushers Jake out. From the hallway, Jake listens in as Brady talks with Victor on the phone. Jake hears him say he has no interest in getting in between Philip and Chloe.
Chloe meets up with Brady at Titan. He assures her he rejected Victor’s plan to break up her and Philip.
Rafe questions his sister’s presence in his kitchen. He thought she moved out… again. Gabi retorts “I’m back. Again.” Rafe doesn’t mind having her there, but he does mind the way she treats his girlfriend. Gabi calls her a heartless bitch, as Ava walks in. Ava calmly watches as the siblings bicker over her. She offers to move out as to not cause any more trouble. Rafe won’t hear of it. He just wants his sister to take the high road for once, just like Ava is. Gabi rolls her eyes as Ava flashes to telling Philip about Gabi and Jake’s plan to oust him from Titan. After more bickering, Gabi relents and reluctantly apologizes to Ava.
Later, Rafe tells Ava he appreciates her effort to get along with Gabi. If his sister doesn’t change her attitude, she won’t like who he chooses. After Rafe leaves for work, Philip stops by to see Ava. He says, “How would you like to help me bring down Gabi Hernandez?”
Gabi meets Jake in the Square. He tells her what he heard about Brady, Philip and Chloe. Gabi thinks Chloe is the Achilles heel they’ll use to bring down Philip.
EJ startles Nicole at Basic Black as she looks at Duke. He assures her she’ll never see Xander in that office again. After discussing Xander’s latest brush with the law, EJ asks about the stuffed bear. Nicole tells him he’s Rafe’s. EJ mocks both Duke and Rafe. When he detects he hit a nerve, he wonders if there’s something going on between Nicole and the commish. She says no but he can see she wishes there were. EJ thinks Nicole can do much better than that “dolt.” In fact, he smirks, she has. He asks her out for dinner.
Gwen visits a handcuffed Xander in the interrogation room. She blames herself for this mess. Xander repeats that she’s worth it. She whispers, “I’m going to get you out of here no matter what it takes.” Xander thinks a jailbreak would be incredibly s*xy, but Gwen says she’s going to confess. When Xander rejects her plan, they try to figure how to find a competent lawyer who would be willing to represent him.
Justin walks into the interrogation room looking for Bonnie. Gwen tries to convince him to defend Xander. Justin refuses. When he mentions the judge he’s presenting Bonnie’s case to, Xander declares he’s corrupt. He’s the same judge EJ bribed regarding his own case. Gwen suggests Justin blackmail the judge to help Bonnie and Xander while she finds the evidence Justin will need against him. Justin leaves without agreeing to the plan. Gwen and Xander try to figure out how to prove the judge is on the take. Gwen has an idea.
In the squad room, Justin learns from Rafe that the judge restricted Bonnie’s visiting privileges for bad behavior.
Wednesday September 29, 2021 :
Jack brings kites to the DiMera mansion for Thomas and Charlotte. After an awkward hello, Abigail thanks him and asks him to stay. She brings up his article on Xander. Jack feels bad about it especially since his buddy’s innocent. When Abigail expresses skepticism, Jack explains Xander was just covering for Gwen. Abigail calls that a match made somewhere other than heaven. Jack recounts Gwen’s story that Snyder was blackmailing her over being a s*x worker. After processing the coincidence of Gwen’s client turning out to be her doctor, Abigail tells her father that she apologized to Gwen about the miscarriage. Jack comforts her when she blames herself for what happened. He urges her to forgive herself. After a moment, Abigail questions Gwen choosing to commit more crimes rather than admit she was a s*x worker.
In the interrogation room, Gwen offers to ask Jake to lean on the judge until he lets Xander go free. After some consideration, Xander suggests they dispense with the violence angle. Gwen’s next idea is to blackmail him by pretending to be a s*x worker. Xander is incensed at the thought, but also wonders how she’d go about it. She says she’d offer him s*x in exchange for letting her boyfriend go. He asks if he is her boyfriend. She says, “I don’t know, are you?” He smirks, “Yeah. I guess I am.” They kiss.
With that’s settled, Xander puts the kibosh on Gwen seducing another man. Gwen scoffs. She’s not going to have s*x with him. She’s just going to record him agreeing to the trade and then blackmail him. Xander thinks that makes more sense, but calls it dangerous. So, still no. Gwen begs him to let her help him. Xander is touched that she’s willing to do this for him. Gwen says he’s the first man who actually means something to her.
She’ll be damned if she lets him go to prison. Xander never thought anyone else would have him after Sarah. Gwen calls them the town’s pariahs, so it makes sense they’re together. Xander agrees that they make a lot of sense. Gwen says it’s settled then. She’ll blackmail the judge and Xander can tell EJ to go to hell.
In the Square, Gabi rants to Jake about Ava. She’s not convinced Ava is completely out of her former business. Gabi wonders if he knows someone who could rub her out. Jake stiffens. He can’t believe she’d even suggest such a thing. He doesn’t want to think about his past and the crap the Vitali’s had him do. Gabi asks for details, like did he kill anyone? He explains he was just an enforcer, but he worries they’d be tempting fate if they dip a toe back into that world.
At Rafe’s, Philip asks Ava to gather more intel on Gabi and Jake since she lives with them. She tells him to go fly a kite, but then reconsiders, wondering what’s in it for her. She informs Philip that Jake used to work for her cousin Angelo, who might have evidence that could send Jake away for a long time. Philip’s eyes light up. He thinks Gabi might trade Gabi Chic for Jake’s freedom. Ava won’t get the goods until Philip puts her in charge of Gabi Chic. She also wants to change the name to Ava Chic. Philip doesn’t think he can make that pitch to the board members or his father. Ava says no deal then. Philip relents and says, “Ava Chic it is.” After they shake on it, Ava calls and leaves a message for Angelo.
Ava and Philip hide as Gabi and Jake come home. Gabi and Jake smell aftershave that seems familiar.
Nicole is shocked when EJ asks her out. He chuckles as they discuss their rocky past. Brady and Chloe enter Basic Black as EJ re-extends his dinner date offer. Brady says, “Please tell me you’re too smart to say yes to that question.” After Brady and EJ trade barbs, Nicole asks Brady not to make a big deal out of this. He reminds her of what EJ is capable of, but Nicole hasn’t forgotten. EJ gets in digs about Brady moving on from Kristen to Chloe. After more bickering, Brady and Chloe leave.
EJ returns to the matter at hand which is dinner with Nicole. She’s not sure she’s ready for that. Also, she wonders if he’s just trying to stick it to Sami. EJ denies it, but assumes Nicole would enjoy sticking it to Samantha as much as he would. Nicole agrees to a date as Brady and Chloe return. EJ leaves. Brady says, “Don’t say I didn’t warn you when it blows up in your face.”
Thursday September 30, 2021 :
DiMera, EJ DiMera makes a dinner reservation over the phone at Brady’s Pub. Lucas overhears, assuming he’s making plans for him and Sami. After EJ corrects him, the men sling insults at each other. Roman intervenes when the men puff up their chests. Lucas grins as he tells EJ he’s investing in Johnny’s movie. Oh, and he’ll be surprised by who “your wife’s real love interest is.”
After Lucas has left, Roman tells EJ he’s investing in Johnny’s movie too. EJ spits that his son’s place is at DiMera. Roman asks, “Do you ever think about how stupid you are?” The men argue about family, with EJ calling Sami a tramp. Roman warns EJ if he keeps talking that way, he’s “damn well gonna get one.” EJ apologizes, but Sami is the one who cheated. Roman points out he’s far from a great husband. Not to mention he’s pushing his son away.
Kate stops by to see Philip at the mansion, worried about Lucas. Philip thinks she would stop obsessing over her kids’ love lives if she had one of her own. She tells him Roman suggested they get back together. However, love is risky and she doesn’t want to take that risk again. And yet… there’s something about him.
Johnny calls John at home looking for his grandma. John says she’s not feeling well and is resting. John tells his grandson they decided to pass on his movie. Reliving those memories is painful. Johnny glibly counters reliving the past could “exorcise” those demons. John angrily tells him what happened to Marlena was horrific and needs to stay private. He orders him to leave the possession out of his movie. Johnny hangs up and says to himself, “That’s the only part I’m leaving in.”
Marlena tosses and turns in bed. She dreams of fighting internally with the devil over Doug. She bolts awakes and yells, “No!” John hears her and runs to the room. He comforts her as she says she had a horrible nightmare, but she can’t remember it. Just something about Doug. She worries she made him feel worse. John suggests she listen to her recording of their session for answers.
Back at the DiMera mansion, Abby finds Johnny and asks about his movie. She wonders if Will included her affair with EJ in his script. Johnny confirms. After some ribbing, he assures her he’s cutting it out. He’s just focusing on Marlena’s possession. As they debate the exploitive nature of his film, he explains he wants to use the people who are connected to the horror as his actors. He asks her to play Marlena. Abby’s taken aback, but as someone with D.I.D., she knows something about someone taking over your life. Johnny asks if she’ll accept the role.
Tripp meets with Julie in Doug’s hospital room. She relays that Doug did not have a good night. Tripp calls agitation a common side effect of dementia. Julie tersely tells him her husband doesn’t have dementia. Tripp apologizes. She knows if she prays for her husband, he will get better. She asks if Tripp believes there is a scientific explanation for everything. He does, but he doesn’t think faith and science are mutually exclusive. She agrees to keep the faith while he focuses on the science.
In the Square, Chanel tells Allie about watching “The Exorcist” with Johnny. She kept dreaming the devil was coming after her. Allie can’t believe Johnny is going through with the movie considering how upset her family will be. Chanel is more worried about him upsetting the devil. After Allie again assures Chanel she’s fine with her dating her brother, she talks about how incredible Tripp has been. However, she couldn’t say, “I love you” back when he said it to her. She looks deeply at Chanel. When she says it for the first time, she wants to make sure she really means it. Tripp arrives. Chanel wistfully watches as Allie kisses him.
At the hospital, John goes to see Doug while Marlena listens to her session with the patient in her office. In Doug’s room, John urges Julie to go home to rest. He’ll stay with Doug. After she leaves, John talks to Doug about Marlena. He awakens and manages to tell John that Marlena tried to kill him.
In her office, Marlena hears the devil speak through Doug on her recording. When she rewinds to listen again, it garbles. She startles as she hears the devil’s voice say, “Did you really need to play this tape? I’m so hurt you’ve already forgotten our little reunion. Allow me to refresh your memory.”
Friday October 1st, 2021 :
After Chanel interrupts Allie and Tripp’s kiss in the Square, she balks at having a drink with them. She says she’s too tired and wistfully watches them walk away.
As Allie and Tripp have a drink at the trendy bar, Ciara and Ben walk in. Tripp and Ben head to the bar to get a drink, as Ciara catches her cousin up on New Orleans, including her and Ben’s talk about having a baby. Allie gets why Ben would be wary. Having a baby changes your entire life. She thinks they should just enjoy being newlyweds for a while. Ciara notes that Ben fears passing on his genes. Allie suggests they adopt. Ciara points out an agency probably won’t want to give a child to a former serial killer. Allie suggests they hire a lawyer instead of using an agency. Ciara knows they’d love any baby, but she hates that Ben thinks he’s cursed.
After getting beers at the bar, Ben asks Tripp if someone could pass evil on to their child. Tripp assures him there is no homicidal gene, but psychosis can be inherited. His kid would have a genetic predisposition to having it too, but there’s no way to know for sure.
At home, Ciara asks Ben what he and Tripp were talking about. He recounts their conversation, but says Tripp couldn’t give him a concrete answer. She suggests he talk to Dr. Evans.
At the DiMera mansion, Chad happens upon Johnny asking Abby to star in his movie. He gets caught up on Johnny’s film centering on Marlena’s possession and agrees to hear his pitch later. Johnny gives them a draft of the script and leaves them to look it over.
Abby pours over the script as Chad tries to talk to her. He wonders if she’s seriously thinking about playing Marlena. She wonders, for argument’s sake, what’s so crazy about it. With no disrespect, Chad tells his wife she can’t act. Abby disputes his claim. Besides, she has time on her hands. Chad grins, “You’re serious about this, aren’t you?” She thinks it could help her get over being recast in her second grade play. Abigail tears up as she recounts having to face her parents’ disappointment in her. Chad feels bad and tries to comfort her. Abigail wipes a tear away and then breaks out into a grin. “See. Told ya I can act,” she says. Chad smiles and claps.
Chanel closes up Sweet Bits and finds Johnny strumming on his guitar in the Square. She grins and sways as he sings to her. When Johnny finishes, she says how impressed she is by his singing. He proclaims he’s a man of many talents. She yawns as they sit on a bench and flirt. She apologizes but Johnny understands — it’s the life of a baker. He puts a pink daisy behind her ear and says goodnight. Chanel beams as she watches him walk away. In her office, the devil talks to Marlena through her recorder. He tells her John’s prayer tore them apart after she so graciously invited him in. He won’t allow her to leave him. Not when they have so much work to do. Marlena won’t help him. The devil reminds her of the fun they had last time. Now, he has a grander agenda. But first, they have to tie up loose ends, a.k.a. Doug. Marlena declares she won’t hurt him. The devil says there may be another way to get Doug out of the picture. She has a choice to make, “Him or me.”
In his hospital room, Doug tells John Marlena tried to kill him. John thinks he’s just confused. Doug insists it’s true and she’ll succeed if John doesn’t do something to stop her. John assures him everything will be okay. Over Doug’s objections, John leaves to find Kayla for something to calm him down.
John finds Julie in the lobby. He relays what Doug told him. Julie thinks the medication is making him paranoid. She rushes to sit with Doug, as John looks for Kayla.
Back in Doug’s room, Doug urges his wife to believe him about Marlena. Julie believes he’s having a hard time and assures him he’ll be himself again soon. As Julie tries to calm him, MarDevil watches from a chair in the shadows, eyes glowing. As Julie turns her back to get Doug water, MarDevil whacks her on the head with a tray. Julie falls to the ground.
John sticks his head in Marlena’s office and finds her recorder.
