According to Precedence Research, the worldwide Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) market reached $125bn in 2021.
However, Africa has yet to make significant progress in the area. The market will be valued $3.9trn by 2030, offering opportunities for African enterprises if they can compete.
Babatunde Akin-Moses, CEO and cofounder of Nigerian peer-to-peer lending platform Sycamore, feels the opportunity is tremendous. "Travelers see how foreign marketplaces sell phones, vehicles, and TVs. Nigeria and Africa are cash-based economies. But they are seeing a new path".
BNPL isn't well-developed in Africa for numerous reasons. First, BNPL is a loan product for individuals, and the continent's credit market is underdeveloped.
BNPL firms charge vendors a transaction fee to provide customers interest-free payment plans. Firms incur upfront costs and recoup the sum from clients.
