Today's reading is Psalm 126. Sowing in the spirit's Garden Our pilgrim's metaphor pictures a farmer sowing in a dry time. The work is hard. The weather promises little. The dried up ground and cloudless skies suggest sowing is useless. He sows in tears. However, his harvest doesn't spring from his own work or the good fortune of good weather....

Today's reading is Psalm 126. Our pilgrim psalmist is in a dry time. He has experienced restoration in the past. He recalls the laughter and joy of those times. However, in his present situation he begs for restoration again. The laughter and joy have diminished. The flood of blessings have waned. There is more woe than weal (those who listen to…...

Today's reading is Psalm 126. Strength From Looking Back Years ago, Keith Green wrote a prayer/song which illustrates precisely the spiritual struggle of our pilgrim in Psalm 126. Today's reading is Psalm 126. It Wasn't Supposed to Be Like This Psalm 126 seems backwards. We expect the poem to begin with the request for God to restore their fortunes and end with the joy of God's restoration response. Instead, this psalm says God had already restored Zion's fortunes, but then begs God to restore their fortunes. Wait! Which is it?...

Today's reading is Psalm 125. The ONe King Who Truly Trusted Perhaps you've already figured out where today's post will go. This week, I've already mentioned the notion of reading this psalm from the perspective of the kings who were called to be the Blessed King of Psalm 1-2. How many of them pulled that off? David was doing really well for a while....

Today's reading is Psalm 125. Your King Matters Earlier this week, I suggested the possibility of reading these songs from the perspective of the king. Specifically, from the perspective of the Blessed King of Psalms 1-2. Perhaps, to be more clear, from the perspective of the kings of Israel and Judah who were called to be the Blessed King of…...

Today's reading is Psalm 125. Be Careful With Metaphors The very mountains which may have been a discouragement from the perspective of leaving Meshech and Kedar in Psalm 121 are most definitely an encouragement from the perspective of Jerusalem's gates in Psalm 125. I admit there is another possible interpretation of the Psalm 121 metaphor, but go with me on this for a second....

Today's reading is Psalm 125. The Pilgrim King On the one hand, it is difficult to have multiple studies or reading plans going at the same time. On the other hand, surprising connections jump out, making the difficulties worth it. As a congregation, our annual reading plan has us going through the last third of the psalms, one psalm per week....

Today's reading is Psalm 125. The Lord Provides and Protects Put yourself in the shoes of an ancient Israelite having been told you are to leave your homestead three times each year. You are to leave your farm untended, your flocks and herds unguarded, your home unprotected and make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem to worship God. Why can't we just worship at home as easily as at Jerusalem and not put our home in danger?...

Today's reading is Psalm 124. How Can We Know? Psalm 124 is fantastic. The Lord is on our side. He conquers enemies. He protects His people. He leads us safely. But, does He really? We don't actually see Him doing any of those things. How can we know? The Lord is on our side. That sounds great. But is it too good to be true?...

Today's reading is Psalm 124. Blessed by the Lord Earlier in the Songs of Ascents, we read, "My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth" (Psalm 121:2, ESV). I understand that. Today's reading is Psalm 124. Praise the Lord! I love how this psalm begins. If the psalmist were writing or singing today, he might say something like, "Had it not been the Lord who was on our side...all together now," and then the congregation would join in, "Had it not been the Lord who was on our side..." The psalmist is so excited about God, he refuses to sing solo....

Today's reading is Psalm 124. How Did WE Get Here? We've followed the pilgrim on his journey one step at a time. One psalm at a time. He began in Meshech and Kedar. More significantly, he began among warmongers. When he was for peace, they were for war. Over the hills he traveled into the city. Even still the taunts of enemies chased him....

Today's reading is Psalm 123. Do as I say, And As I dO First Some say familiarity breeds contempt. Perhaps. On a more surprising note, familiarity breeds ignorance. That is, being so familiar with a person, topic, principle, institution leads us to assume we know things we don't actually know. Familiarity can cause us to cut corners and take shortcuts which make us miss important details and take issues for granted....

Today's reading is Psalm 123. Confident I don't know where your heart, mind, and spirit have been while reading the past two posts. I've tried hard not to make this psalm too easy. I've tried hard not to take short cuts and miss the depth of meaning in the pilgrim's poem. I think about the time Jesus told 5000+ people if they really wanted to have salvation, they had to eat His flesh and drink His blood....

Today's reading is Psalm 123. Vulnerable I get it. I understand why some, after reading yesterday's post, decided to abandon Jesus. We love the idea of Jesus saving us, but enslaving us? That's a tough pill to swallow. Frankly, it digs right down to the reason why it takes faith to be saved. We have to believe with such conviction and confidence that Jesus is saving us, we decide to do what unbelievers find repugnant....

Today's reading is Psalm 123. An Unamerican Truth As American Christians, we place a premium on the gospel claims of freedom. We love to know Christ set us free for freedom. We don't mind Christ's law, because it is called a law of liberty. We want to know the truth, because it will set us free from sin. However, also as Americans, we so fixate on freedom, we miss gospel freedom has a context....
