Today's reading is Psalm 128. Who is the Fruitful Vine? It's been a long time since we read Psalm 1. But back then we recognized something. While the psalm about the blessed man is something we strive for, it is something Jesus actually attained. We strive to ignore the counsel of the wicked and the way of sinners, but we've all failed....

Today's reading is Psalm 128. Reading While Caught in Culture Regrettably, we find it hard to separate ourselves from the cultural stream in which we swim. We are surrounded not by a culture wishing to right wrongs, correct excesses, find God's right way, but by a culture rebelling against all that has gone before. We are surrounded by a pendulum-riding culture committed to opposing anything that resembles past generations....

Today's reading is Psalm 128. A Callback to the Garden In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. On the earth, the Lord demarcated the region of Eden. In the east of Eden, He planted a garden. He watered the garden with four rivers, causing all manner of trees delightful to the eyes and good for food to spring up....

Today's reading is Psalm 128. One-Hundred-And-Twenty-Eighth verse Same as the First I am increasingly convinced all of the psalms point back in some way to the first two. Further, we've seen many callbacks to the blessed man of the primary psalm. This week's psalm, however, takes the cake. It isn't a callback. It's a complement. If we want to fully understand this psalm, we need to study the first psalm....

Today's reading is Psalm 128. If the Lord Builds and Protects the House, What do i do? In Psalm 126, our pilgrim faced a dry time. He recalled the previous times of restoration, blessing, and joy. He looked forward to coming times of restoration, blessing, and joy. The hinge between and connecting these times, of course, was God. Though the pilgrim kept sowing his seeds, only the Lord could restore the harvest....

Today's reading is Psalm 127. Finding Jesus in the Most Shocking of Places Not only does Psalm 127 have layers of source material and application, it has layers when it comes to finding Jesus. First, as we've seen Abraham, David, and Solomon in this psalm (we could no doubt have seen Zerubbabel and Nehemiah if we had a few more days with it), how can we not see Jesus?...

Today's reading is Psalm 127. The Pilgrim and Us We often say (I think I've even said it in this series on the Songs of Ascents) we need to pray like it all depends on God and work like it all depends on us. In the situational contexts in which we say that, I think we are speaking truth. Usually, we say that when we are talking to folks who want to pray and then do nothing....

Today's reading is Psalm 127. The King Who Built God's House We may have struggled to see the Abraham and David layers of Psalm 127, the Solomon layer is obvious. The psalm is even labeled, "A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon." Whether Solomon wrote the psalm in his own day of building the Lord's house or some other author wrote it years later and labeled it such to say he was talking about Solomon, either way, the label makes the connection clear....

Today's reading is Psalm 127. A House Fit for a King I am increasingly convinced we should start our look at every psalm from the perspective of David, the king after God's own heart. We begin by seeing Psalms 1 & 2 as the doorway and entry hall to the psalms. David was the blessed man who delighted in God's Law, chosen by God and set in Jerusalem, the city where God would put His name, to be God's anointed....

Today's reading is Psalm 127. the Father of Nations As we've walked and talked through the Songs of Ascents, we've recognized layers of source material, meaning, and application. Psalm 127 is no exception. In the story these psalms come together to tell, our pilgrim has traveled from Meshech and Kedar into Jerusalem. After arriving in the city, he still faces persecution and scoffing....

Today's reading is Psalm 126. the Sower's Shocking Harvest In Psalm 126, our pilgrim and his compatriots sow in a dry time. The floods have not come, filling the streams with water. When the pilgrim sows, he has no reason to believe the harvest will be plentiful except the Lord's promise. Yet, though he sows in tears, he believes the shouts of joy will return when he brings his sheaves with him....

Today's reading is Psalm 126. Sowing in the spirit's Garden Our pilgrim's metaphor pictures a farmer sowing in a dry time. The work is hard. The weather promises little. The dried up ground and cloudless skies suggest sowing is useless. He sows in tears. However, his harvest doesn't spring from his own work or the good fortune of good weather....
