Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 161-176). One in a Hundred I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant, for I do not forget your commandments.Psalm 119:176 (ESV) Is this really how our psalmist's story ends? Of course not. Yes, it is how the psalm ends, but not the story. We find the rest of the story in…...

Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 161-176). BAAAAAA! We've already stated the surprise at the psalm's ending yesterday. But see it again. The final stanza is one thing. The final verse takes it to a completely new level. I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant, for I do not forget your commandments.Psalm 119:176 (ESV) This psalm is not the victory psalm of a conquering warrior....

Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 161-176). Is This Really How it Ends? Over the last eleven weeks, I've read, studied, discovered many surprising things. However, today we come to what I consider the most surprising. I thought the SIN/SHIN stanza was a perfect end to Psalm 119. The princes were still persecuting, yes, but our psalmist was riding high in almost every way....

Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 161-176). Sowing Seed in the Spirit's Garden Nothing demonstrates spiritual growth like the fruit of the Spirit. When we are walking by the Spirit, following the Spirit's lead, the Spirit will grow His fruit in our lives. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law....

Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 161-176). Praise Without Ceasing Other than the very first line, this stanza is the brightest of the psalm. The psalmist rejoices, praises, hopes, loves, endures. Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 145-160). If Jesus Needed to Pray... As our psalmist presents the ideal Israelite who loves God's Word and faithfully submits to Him, he writes: I rise before dawn and cry for help;I hope in your words.Psalm 119:147 (ESV) Mark 1:35 tells us about the truly ideal Israelite: And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed (ESV)....

Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 145-160). The Whole package Everyone likes some of God's Word. Our psalmist loves the sum of God's Word. Do you catch the difference? How easy it is to pick and choose. We drop into a passage, find a comforting nugget, then walk away as if all that matters is that tidbit we like. The struggle is taking the bits we don't like and hanging on to them as strongly....

Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 145-160). Disgust The psalmist has said some pretty strong things. He has said some surprising things. But the ESV of Psalm 119:158 takes the cake for me. I look at the faithless with disgust, because they do not keep your commands (ESV). "Disgust." Really? Is that a biblical, godly sentiment to have toward anyone? The term is translated "loathe" and "loathsome" in other passages (see…...

Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 145-160). A Blast from my Childhood When I was a kid, watching "Sesame Street," I saw Grover demonstrate opposites. The only one I really remember is the scene in which he would run all the way up to the camera, having an extreme close-up. He would then say, "Near!" Then he'd run way, way back from the camera and from a distance he would holler (but you could hardly hear him) "Far!" Then all the way back up to the camera, "Near!" And all the way back, "Far!" He did that about half a dozen times, then it went to some other sketch....

Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 145-160). Crying and Calling The QOPH stanza looks in two directions. The main direction is from our psalmist to God with an emphasis on prayer. The other direction is from God to the psalmist in the form of promise. With this psalm containing 172 verses of prayer, we are not surprised to hear the psalmist say things like: "With my whole heart I cry..." "I call to you..." "I rise before dawn and cry for help..." "Hear my voice..." This psalmist prays....

Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 129-144). The Answer to the Psalmist's Request In Psalm 119:133, the psalmist requests, "Keep steady my steps according to your promise, and let no iniquity get dominion over me" (ESV). No doubt, God, to some degree, granted the psalmist's request in his own lifetime. I'm sure God helped the psalmist have grace and strength to obey....

Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 129-144). Surprising Adherents of God's Word The psalmist has already declared God's Word makes him incredibly wise. According to vss. 97-100, because of God's Word he is wiser than his enemies, his teachers, and even the aged. We'd expect that kind of wisdom to pay off in some tangible ways, right? If he is that wise, folks should look up to him by now....

Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 129-144). The LORD is Righteous I've loved this walk through Psalm 119 so much, I've thought about putting together some Bible class material going through this single psalm some day. I've already decided if I do, I will ask at least one repeat question for every stanza. I'd ask the students to read and reread the stanza and then try to come up with a summarizing name for each one....

Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 129-144). What Makes Me Cry? The final line of the PE section forces a question upon me. What makes me cry? Just the other day, I was in a group chat in which someone asked if a particular book made people cry. I think about videos, stories, songs, shows, movies that make me cry. Honestly, every time I read or hear that kids' book "I'll Love You Forever," the water works turn on....

Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 129-144). A Fear of Faltering Our psalmist loves God's law. He delights in God's law. There was a time when he ignored God's law, but God, according to His Word, faithfully afflicted the psalmist. This affliction prompted the psalmist to repent. Now the psalmist faithfully walks in accord with God's statutes and precepts. The word itself is light to his path and a lamp to his way....

Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 113-128). God's Unexpected Action Psalm 119:126 says: It is time for the LORD to act,for your law has been broken (ESV). What do you expect the Lord's action to be? Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 113-128). Loyal to the Covenant Throughout Psalm 119, the psalmist has reveled in God's covenant. The psalmist has called God to account by His covenant. The psalmist has taken comfort in God's covenant. There is, however, one point we must make sure we don't miss as we go through the psalm. As the psalmist expects the Lord to be loyal to the covenant, the psalmist commits himself to be loyal to the covenant....

Today's reading is Psalm 119 (vss. 113-128). The Final Replacement Term As we have learned before, the psalmist uses eight terms to describe the Word of God over and over again throughout Psalm 119. Those terms are used in 172 of the 176 verses. A case can be made that in the 4 outlier verses, the psalmist uses secondary or replacement terms....
