Rememberence Special - A serious song this time in reverence to the men and women who died in the two great wars and conflicts that have been waged since.

This song is dedicated to my great uncle, Walter Collins Gostling who prior to the first war had been a postman in Ipswich. He had a younger sister Ivy (my Grandmother), a wife called Ellen and a young daughter Elsie Clara.

He was born in 1889 and signed up in July 1916 for the 8th Battalion Post Office rifles. In February 1917, less than 6 months later, he died in Casualty Station 17 as a result of a gun he was manning overheating and blowing up during the offensive at Ypres. He was just 28 and left a wife and an 8 year old daughter.

My Grandmother missed him terribly and even in her eighties, she sat there with tears in her eyes as she remembered the young man who had his life taken away from him so prematurely.

The casaualties of war are not just numbers and statistics. They were real flesh and blood people who left families behind. Families who would grieve and struggle to make ends meet, with little or no support from the country for whom they sacrificed their lives.
