In my early 20s, I was drawn to dating older men mainly because of their financial stability. There were genuine feelings involved, but a big part of the appeal was the lifestyle they could offer me. At that time, I valued the comfort and security that came with financial stability.

As I got older, though, I realized that what I truly wanted in a relationship was someone who had time for me and was willing to make the relationship a priority. This led me to start dating men closer to my age—someone who shares similar future goals, like having children and building a life together.

This experience taught me how much age impacts our priorities and desires. Age is a big factor in relationships and life choices, which is why society often classifies us by age groups. Our needs and goals change as we grow older, and these age brackets help us find people who are in similar stages of life.

In my experience, I’ve rarely, if ever, seen a young individual date an older person who lacks financial stability. Based on my observations, these relationships are usually driven by a desire for security rather than love. And there is nothing wrong with wanting financial stability, what’s wrong is using the person’s money for selfish reasons.

This is how it feels to be an adult. I still feel sad, and I still experience overwhelming emotions, but I no longer call my supervisor to say I can’t come to work because I’d rather stay in bed having a meltdown all day. One day, I woke up with terrible period pain; I cried while taking pain relief, but life went on. I pulled myself together, gathered my things, and drove to work. There were weeks when I had to work every day, feeling utterly drained. I cried, and yet life went on.

Wherever you go, you will face life’s realities. I endured living in Manila, where I had to wait for a jeepney for hours during the rainy season. The struggles were different, but the emotions—frustration and anger—were the same. I still feel those emotions here, even though I no longer deal with traffic or public transportation. I feel the same when I encounter difficulties at work. But believe me, the emotions are always the same. So, learn to embrace hardships wherever you are, because this is the reality of life.
