"One time, we were in the playoffs against Colorado, and Pierre Lacroix was the manager of that team. [The visitors' bench] in the old McNichols Arena was really close to the boards, whereas [the Avalanche] bench was big, with lots of room and a place for the coaches to stand behind the bench. The bench that we used had no bench to stand on, so the coaches had to look over the [players' heads] all of the time. We lost the first two games [of a playoff series] in Colorado and we got back to Edmonton, and I had the building manager change the boards so that ... it was really hard for their guys to get on and off the ice. He moved the bench up really close, and I took the [secondl bench out so there was nothing to stand on. That really pi**ed them off. In those days you could get away with a lot of that petty bu****it.... Now you get warned all the time about doing that kind of stuff. Half of the flavor of the game is gone; there is no fun anymore."

On March 14, 1986, the score-at-will Oilers were playing the Detroit Red Wings. Coffey, having already notched his fourth point of the game with plenty of time remaining on the clock took at seat on the bench next to Gretzky.
“Wayne turned to me and asked, ‘Do you know the record for points in a game by a defenceman?’ I didn’t know, but Wayne knew all the stats, all the records. ‘No,’ I told him,” Coffey remembers. “ ‘It’s eight,’ Wayne said. ‘Let’s go.’ And I went out and got four more. Didn’t beat the record (held by Tom Bladon), but I tied it.”

”As far as Wayne was concerned, I could only remember a couple of instances where I actually had to react to somebody doing something to him. That was very rare. Tim Hunter took a slash at him once when I was on the ice in Edmonton and I went after Tim. Paul Baxter was threatening [Gretzky] once, and he went by our bench and threatened Gretz, and I dropped him with a punch right from the bench, so I didn't even have to get on the ice.”
