The Olympics are over but there are still lessons to be learned - in particular from a brave woman who is small in stature but a giant in sport, Simone Biles. On this episode I read an open letter written by Dan Rather called 'A Profile In Courage'. In the early 1900's when the photograph below was taken, it was a rare sight to see an African American man and a white business owner sitting shoulder to shoulder. But the fact that they sat side by side is no accident - it was by design. These men were more to each other than employer and employee they were friends and their unlikely friendship has been putting whiskey in glasses all over the world for more than 150 years and that is definitely Something Good.

Today we celebrate the birth of our nation. A nation conceived of by men who knew that their grand experiment carried inherent flaws. The first sentence of our constitution acknowledges the founders understanding that their conception of a “more perfect union” was not going to be perfect. The implication is that the founders understood that while it is noble to strive for perfection, the goal itself is unattainable. In fact, they went on to create a process by which the constitution could be amended to accommodate the change that inevitably comes with time and understanding. And so, while we proudly display our flag today, we should also reflect on what it means to be a patriot. It means more than waving a flag. It means more than wrapping yourself in the Stars and Stripes. As we celebrate this 4th of July let’s remember that being a patriot means we live up the ideals set forth in the constitution, that we continue to embrace change and better ourselves and our country to form a more perfect union. On this day, let us remember the words of our Declaration of Independence, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” And that “Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

This 4th of July, remember that as we continue to strive towards a more perfect union, we have a patriotic duty to ensure that our country lives up to its highest ideals, that all men are created equal and to guarantee the inalienable rights of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness for every single American.

I wish you all a happy, healthy and safe 4th of July!

Today we honor those who gave all. May we never forget their sacrifice.

Every spring, around Memorial Day, the poppies in front of our house bloom and 2020 is no different. Yesterday there were no flowers open and this morning a bunch of the poppies have bloomed. It made me think of the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’ written and first recited at the funeral of a WWI soldier by his friend and fellow soldier John McCrae. Full text of the poem is below.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.

Sometimes simple is best and there is nothing more simply delicious than the Taco. Tortilla, meat, onions, cilantro and lime are all you need to make a delicious, simple and easy meal that everyone can enjoy - even on the go. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that bring the greatest pleasure and that’s why I think the humble taco is definitively, Something Good.
