McDonald’s left a big void in the hearts and stomachs of Russian people after exiting the Russian market. Recent statistics have shown that shawarma sales have increased 23 times in the last 2 months since Russia has been without Big Macs. Nobody really knows if it’s cat or dog meat that is served in those burrito like concoctions from small kiosks all over Moscow with close to zero regard for sanitary standards but seems like business is good.

Built in 1909 this beautiful movie theater just recently reopened its doors after a 6 year renovation process. Top of the line equipment and posh interior. The only problem is that Hollywood is no longer going to send Russia any movies because of the sanctions. It’s ok though. We can always watch the “Diamond Arm” for the 55th time.

GES-2. From a power station to an art object. Just proves that if you wait long enough everything becomes an art object. It was launched in 1907 and operated till 2014. It was originally built to power the Moscow trams. Purchased by Russian billionaire Leonid Mikhelson in 2014 the building went through some major renovations. Now it serves as an event space and an exhibition so go check it out. Not so fast though - if you don’t have a QR code they won’t let you in.

Yes, Moscow is beautiful in the winter but it’s also very cold. Below zero temperature throughout the winter makes us bundle up in layers upon layers of warm clothes. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Moscow was −42.2 °C. It happened in January of 1940.

GUM - one of the most elite shopping centers in Moscow was open for business in 1893. It was called Upper Trading Rows back then but the name changed to State Department Store (GUM) by Lenin’s order in 1921 and remained to this day. GUM was one of the biggest projects of its time. Doesn’t matter if it’s +30C or -30C in Moscow. The ice-cream kiosk stays open. During the Soviet Union you could find similar kiosks everywhere but they only had one or two types of ice-cream if any. Hard to imagine that some 30 years later you would have a hard time choosing your favorite flavor out of hundreds. But it just doesn’t taste the same as it did back in the Soviet Union, does it?

One of the best things about living in Moscow is how fast you can have things delivered to your doorsteps. Groceries, restaurant food, household items, clothes, electronics - you name it. You can have food within 10-30 minutes and other stuff within couple of hours. I don’t know if such a convenient delivery service exists anywhere else in the world. What do you usually get delivered?

Moscow has a lot of beautiful buildings all over the city. As long as you can afford it finding a place to live is not a problem. It hasn’t always been like this. During Soviet Union people often had to wait for years to get an apartment from the government.
