If you have followed the 2021 F1 season, you know what a joyride the last race of the season was expected to be. Max Verstappen is now a world champion which he wouldn't have been if it wasn't for Latifi crashing out, leading to a safety car being deployed. The race was full of emotions, drama and protests too.
Ever since the first lap, the (ma)FIA came into play but I’m sure Max fans didn't mind them at the end of the race. On the very first lap, Lewis cut through the chicane and wasn't made to give the position back when the same was the case in Saudi Arabia and Max was penalised. Through this move, he gained about more than 1 second on Max but when the FIA ruled in favour of Lewis, everyone was fuming.
The race was Lewis’ the moment he took over Sergio Perez. Mercedes did have a dominant car, even when Lewis was on Medium tyres and Max on softs. They had a competitive car, one which they could have won in. Max had relatively new tires and was catching on well, but not nearly as quick enough as he needed to win the World Driving Championship.
Latifi’s car crash came as a very doubtful situation since it happened in the last 8 laps of the race. Red Bull capitalised on this opportunity in the hope of there being at least one racing lap and changing max to soft tyres. Played out really well for them at the end since they won the race and Max won the championship.
The drama didn't stop there since FIA allowed only 4 of the lapped cars to overtake the safety car and not all of them. Did this influence the race decision, we don’t know, but certainly looked so for Mercedes. Mercedes was furious, as they would be, their championship got stolen right from under their nose, but only because of Max's sheer talent and a bit of luck for Red Bull.
Mercedes gave in two protests to the FIA, both of which got rejected by the stewards. They have already expressed intention to appeal and they have 4 days to file a case under the court of arbitration of sports. The championship has been nothing but a roller coaster, even more so after the season has ended.
