If you listened to Episode 6 "SCOTUS: RBG and ACB" then you heard about the Caning of Charles Sumner. In 1856, Senator Charles Sumner (R-MA) was beaten to unconsciousness with a cane on the Senate floor by Representative Preston Brooks (D-SC) for opposing slavery. Representative Brooks was so incensed at Senator Sumner's speech, which specifically targeted two pro-slavery Senators, Brooks marched onto the Senate floor and beat Sumner with a cane. No one stopped him. In fact, both men became "heros" in their regions. Despite surviving a House censure resolution, Brooks resigned, was immediately reelected, and died shortly thereafter.
