PHOTOS: Commissioner for Trade and Investment visits scene of fire outbreak at Ubani Market

Commisioner for Trade and Investment Chief John Okiyi Kalu Wednesday visited the scene of the fire outbreak at the 'Provision Line' of Ubani Market, Umuahia, to sympathise with victims of a midnight fire that razed the section of the market and destroyed goods worth millions and ordered full investigation into the cause of the fire.

Men of the Abia State Fire Service and emergency response team quickly responded to the distress call and completely put the situation under control and salvage unaffected goods.

During the visit, the Commissioner represented by the permanent Secretary Sir Michael Egwu accompanied by top management staff of the ministry spoke with the victims at the scene.

The Commisioner who described the incident as “unfortunate”, assured the affected traders of government's support, saying the State Government will support the victims to be back on their feet.

He said: “On behalf of the State Government, I commiserate with the affected traders over this unfortunate incident, but we thank God that no life was lost.

“We will start full investigation into the remote causes of this incident, so that we can plan to forestall incidents like this in future. As a government, we will look at what support we can render."

He reassured the traders of government's resolve to
ensure adequate safety measures around the market and across all markets in the State with the aim to forestall future occurrence.

Those affected include: Mr. Goddy Elowo ( Provisions and Accessories), Mr. Chukwudi Asiegbu (Provisions and Accessories), Mrs. Faith Agwasie (Provisions and Accessories) and Mr. Chima Iwuchukwu (Drugs).

Former Anambra State Governor and Presidential Candidate of the Labor Party, Mr Peter Obi was at the Country Home of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu at Umuobiakwa, Obingwa LGA early this morning for a courtesy visit.

Former Governor Obi informed Governor Ikpeazu that he was in Abja State to attend an event at the Mater Dei Catholic Cathedral Umuahia and in line with official courtesies and protocols, he had to come to see the Governor before proceeding to the event.

Breaking: Obinna Don Norman In Trouble, ADC SWC Suspends Him As Abia State Chairman

Controversial Abia journalist and chairman of African Democratic Congress, ADC, Abia State chapter, Obinna Don Norman, has been suspended as state chairman by the State Working Committee, SWC, of the party.

According to a letter obtained by the NewsCritic online conveying the decision of the party to the National Chairman of the ADC, which was dated 4th July, 2022, the SWC disclosed that the party chairman Obinna Don Norman was suspended for embezzlement of party funds and breach of party’s constitution.

The letter stated that the house has mandated him to hand over his duties to the Deputy Chairman of the party and Legal Adviser respectively upon ratification by the SEC meeting to follow immediately.

Also, the SWC clarified that the Secretary has been directed to write the suspension letter to the embattled state chairman.

The letter reads in part: “we make reference to our meeting held today being 4th July, 2022 wherein we resolved to suspend Don Norman Obinna as the state chairman and Emole Onwuasonya as the Coordinator INEC Liaison and Electoral Matters for embezzlement of party fund and breach of the party constitution”.

Among the SWC members that signed the letter were Chief E.E Azubuike, state Legal Adviser, Mazi K.O Kanu, Deputy Chairman; Uche Ndom Conqueror state secretary; Okey N Maju Victor, State Treasurer; Farah Emereole state youth leader and Ben O. Kanu the state Auditor.

NewsCitic online reports that the embattled state chairman, Obinna Don Norman had earlier shared on his social media page a petition against his leadership by the Concerned Abia Citizens. The petition dated 9th June, 2022 and addressed to the National Chairman ADC, Abuja, was titled ‘Battered Public Image and Serial Nefarious activities of Don Norman Obinna Haunts ADC Abia State Chapter’.

The group raised concern over the activities of the chairman and the future of the party, claiming that his presence is a hinderance to the party’s growth as Abians are reluctant to join the party because of the image of the chairman.

Efforts to get the response of Obinna Don Norman was not successful as message sent to him didn’t get any reply. Also, when this reporter contacted the governorship candidate of the ADC Bishop Sunday Onuoha for comments, he replied that he is out of the country.

Obinna Nwosu, the House of Representatives candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency election has said that Nigerians are donating their time, money and resources to Peter Obi without him asking.
Sharing his thoughts via Twitter, Nwosu said that most politician are jealous of the former Anambra governor because of the strong support he is getting from Nigerians.

He insisted that Nigerians are already giving their resources to the Labor Party, LP presidential candidate while others are receiving invoice.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi has put out a disclaimer following a controversial campaign poster on a branded praying mat.

This came after some Northern Muslims via the microblogging platform, Twitter criticized a support group of the Labour party presidential candidate for branding a praying mat in a mosque with the politician’s photo.

According to them, it was wrong to hang anything portraying humans or animals inside a mosque.

OBINGWA LOCAL GOVERNMENT TAKEN OVER BY SECURITY OPERATIVES.

Reports reaching our newsroom reveal that the Obingwa LGA headquarters, Mgboko has being surrounded by Security Agencies as Government House Police Vans are also sighted within the premises.

Workers at the LGA are also said to be sneaking out of the environment for fear of the unknown.

This is even as some Councillors have being hijacked by the Former Deputy Governor, Chief Eric Acho Nwakanma in his House since 8am with their phones seized as they are asked to sign an impeachment notice.

The Cerk of the House who is also the Head of Personal Management of the LGA has also being summoned to ensure that the impeachment notice is backdated to reflect it was done before the Local Government Chairman's defection to the Young Progressives Party, YPP from the People's Democratic Party,and that the legislative chambers opened for further impeachment proceedings.

An insider information reveal that the Councillors have being promised Three point five million naira ( #.3.5m) each should they go ahead with the impeachment proceedings.

While we celebrate the sacrifices these individuals made, we must acknowledge that democracy on its own will not usher in Eldorado.

To realize our potentials as a democratic nation, we must normalize recruiting the best hands to manage public resources. We must evolve a system that throws up the best amongst us to assume leadership positions in public sector at all levels.

This Democracy Day celebration, I want to urge my fellow youths, and indeed every Nigerian up to the voting age to see the forthcoming 2023 elections as an opportunity to do things differently from the way we have done in the past. Let us utilize this golden opportunity that democracy has bestowed upon us to take a leap from crowning ineptitude to installing competence, accountability and performance.

The labors of the founding fathers of our democracy would have become a waste if after decades of democracy we still constrain our choices to what the establishment forces upon us. If after decades of democracy we still think along ethnic and religious lines then we further reinforce the failures of our political leadership at all levels.

Government direct that they submit all government properties in their possession, including their identity cards to the Office of the Hon. Commissioner for Petroleum immediately.

IKPEAZU VISITS UMUNNEOCHI...

PROMISES TO STAMP OUT KIDNAPPING

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has promised to laiase with leaders and stakeholders of Umunneochi LGA with a view to putting an end to kidnapping and other social vices that have become the order of the day in the area.

Governor Ikpeazu who was addressing the people of Umunneochi LGA during a meeting at the Palace of Eze Godson Ezekwesiri at Umuelem Isuochi said that the issue of insecurity in Umunneochi and neighbouring communities has become a matter of great concern, adding that it pains him to see any Abian in danger.

The Governor noted that many steps had been taken in the past, adding that government will no longer treat the matter with kids' gloves, adding that the recent kidnapping of the Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria would mark the end of kidnappings around that area.

The Governor decried the worsening state of insecurity across the country and called for concerted efforts to deal with the situation.

Governor Ikpeazu, therefore, directed stakeholders of Umunneochi to articulate various flashpoints in the area for immediate action, restating that the ban on open grazing is still in full force and promising to do all it takes to put an end to the menace.

Speaking earlier, the Methodist Archbishop of Okigwe Archdiocese, The Most Rev. Biereonwu Onuagha who regretted that Umunneochi has been turned into a money-making centre for kidnappers and other criminals called for the reopening of the Ihube-Lomara road, noting that the closure of the road turned it into a known flashpoint for criminals.

Archbishop Onuagha also called for the immediate relocation of the Lokpanta Cattle Market which he described as a security threat to them and thanked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for his role in the timely release of The Methodist Prelate recently kidnapped along Leru-Umunneochi road.

Also in their speeches, a former chairman of the old Isuikwuato LGA, Chief Uzo Egbo and the Chairman of the Umunneochi Traditional Rulers Council who is also the Traditional Ruler of Aro Ikpa Autonomous Community, Eze Ernest Onwuka noted that Umunneochi as a Local Government shares borders with all the south East states makes the area vulnerable to all sorts of crimes as over 12 incidences of kidnapping have been recorded along the Leru-Lomara-Nneato road in within a short period.

They called for the dismantling of various military checkpoints in the area and thanked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for coming to their rescue as their sons and daughters no longer visit home due to prevailing insecurity in the area.

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu had on arrival visited the scene where the kidnapping of the Methodist Prelate His Eminence Samuel Kanu Uche and his team took place while the Commissioner for Information, Dr Eze Chikamnayo, Chief Ndidi Okereke, the Member representing Umunneochi State constituency Hon. Okey Igwe, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Chief Okey Ahiwe, the Executive Chairman of Umunneochi LGA, Chief Ifeanyi Madu, Traditional Rulers, Top Religious Leaders and other stakeholders in the area were present at the meeting.

ABIA ADC GUBER PRIMARIES: Otisi Ebitu Ukiwe Rejects Bishop Onuoha’s Victory, Reveals Irregularities

The result of African Democratic Congress (ADC) Abia State governorship primaries that held at Kolpin Society in Umuahia on Saturday 4th June 2022 has been rejected by Mr. Otisi Ebitu Ukiwe one of the frontline aspirants in the election.

Recall that Bishop Sunday Onuoha was declared the winner of the primary election after polling 330 votes with Otisi Ebitu Ukiwe getting 160 votes even though Otisi’s agents and some supporters pulled out of the election before the counting process started.

During the primary election, Otisi Ebitu Ukiwe’s agent raised concerned about the delegate list, lack of identification of the delegates by Local Government Chairmen and disenfranchisement of some delegates.

While reacting to the election, Otisi described the process as unimaginable and further stated that the process observed during the primary election was opposite to what the guideline stipulated.

He revealed that what happened during the ADC gubernatorial primaries revealed that the party ab initio does not have the intension to run a free and fair or any credible election in Abia State.

Otisi went further to state that he would have been satisfied if he was the only one affected by this, but that the ADC LGA chairmen, women leaders, youth leaders and other officers in the party in Abia State are not happy with what happened.

When he was pressed further to state what the issues are, he alleged that the LGA Chairmen of the party were not able to recognize most of the delegates that appeared to vote.

He also alleged that the real delegates were pushed aside while other non-delegates went in and replaced them

He assured his supporters that they will seek redress on the issue as they are already preparing a petition to forward to the leadership of the party.

Following a keenly contested PDP presidential primaries election held in Abuja to elect a flag bearer for the major opposition political party ahead of the 2023 general elections, a frontline politician and 2019 house of representatives candidate of the PDP, Chima Anyaso, has congratulated the former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, for emerging victorious in the presidential primaries.

The results from the primaries saw Atiku Abubakar emerge with 371 votes to beat other contenders such as Nyesom Wike, Udom Emmanuel, Bukola Saraki, and others to a landslide victory.

Anyaso said that former vice-presentiment Atiku Abubarkar remains a formidable force for the PDP ahead of the general election. He pledges to commit his resources and political capacity to ensure victory for Atiku Abubarkar come to the 2023 election.

The result of the election showed a strong performance by the former vice president.

"The current situation where some menbers of our party in Abia State are leaving the party because they didn't succeed in getting tickets to run election this time speaks to the characteristic insatiability and jumpology of human beings. These are people who have risen to the topmost echelon of our political system courtesy of the PDP. Some of these people have held elective positions for 20 years and above. Then, the PDP was a great party. These people rose to the echelon of their ambitions at the expense of others in the party whose ambitions were either truncated or delayed.
Simply because the party this time chose to give opportunities to other people in the finest traditions of participatory democracy and asked these ones to allow others have a taste of elective leadership, they left the party and suddenly remembered that the party that has given them the best for several years is no longer good. So the party is good as long as their personal ambitions are given preference? Goodluck to them. As for me, I will remain in the PDP. Why wouid I leave a party that gave me the opportunity to be a Governor?

In this National Convention, while i have my clear preference, if things dont go our way, i will accept the result and work with the party for the general elections. I am a core party man and what should be uppermost in the minds of all our members should be how to ensure victory for our party in the general elections next year, irrespective of who the candidate is".

PRESS STATEMENT

*ABIA PDP DID NOT SUBMIT GINGER ONWUSIBE'S NAME TO INEC AS A CANDIDATE*

The attention of Abia PDP has been drawn to a disclaimer by Mr. Ginger Obinna Onwusibe alleging that our great Party, the PDP has submitted his name to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC as the winner of the Isiala Ngwa North State Constituency primary election held on May 22, 2022.

It has become imperative to put the records straight and let the general public know the true position of the Party on Ginger Onwusibe’s claim.

We state in very clear terms that we have in our possession, payments made by Ginger Obinna Onwusibe for the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms and sworn affidavits to contest the Isiala Ngwa North State Constituency seat under the PDP. We also have records that he participated in the last PDP State House of Assembly primary election and lost woefully to a very credible candidate.

Ginger Onwusibe’s unstable character made the stakeholders of the party in his constituency lose absolute confidence in him, and the PDP in its wildest imagination will not field him for a councillorship election in his Ward knowing full well that he will fail.

The good people of Isiala Ngwa had clearly become disenchanted with Onwusibe’s representation and in time made a good decision to show him the way out. The disappointment was caused by many reasons, among which was his outburst against Abia North.

Onwusibe had stoked the embers of discord between the good people of Ukwa la Ngwa and Abia North at the inception of the search for a successor to our able governor when he unadvisedly said there was no person in Abia North capable of flying the Party’s flag for the 2023 governorship election. The attempt to create enmity between two peace loving people was unbecoming of a man who occupied his position in the State and it did not go down well with the elders, stakeholders and the Party faithful across the entire State.

This disenchantment caused by his unguided and uncouth outburst was evidenced in the way he was roundly defeated by a very credible aspirant who will fulfill the yearnings and aspirations of the good people of Isiala Ngwa North State Constituency in the coming dispensation. To them and to the Party, he is a good riddance to bad rubbish.

It is also unfortunate and pitiable that a man who has been part of this process for so many years will out of confusion and desperation fail to understand that, by the provisions of the new Electoral Law, the date for submission of names of candidates for the 2023 elections by political parties to INEC has not fallen due. PDP has not submitted any candidates names to INEC, let alone Ginger Obinna Onwusibe’s.

We call on the good people of Isiala Ngwa North State Constituency and all members of the Abia PDP to disregard this laughable claim. It is a figment of his imagination and nothing can be farther from the truth.

I hereby State categorically clear that I did not participate, take part nor show presence during the PDP sham and infamous process or primary election of 22nd May, 2022 as I had resigned my membership of the party many days before the primary election hence I withdrew and/ or backed out of the process. I therefore did not win any primary election in PDP and I am not a candidate of PDP. My decision was based on the impropriety, notoriety and infamy overtly surrounding the 2022 primary elections in the party as orchestrated by the ill-advised leadership of the party in Abia State and which by extension is consuming the party like a monster.

I have move on with my personal life and my political carrier, Going forward I will be seeking the mandate of the people of Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency to represent them at the Federal House of Representatives come 2023 on the platform of Labor Party, I therefore humbly seek the support of our people for Good governance which I represent

Ogah scored 141,952 votes, other aspirants pulled the following results; Paul Ikonne – 27, 054, Alex Otti 2414, Obinna Oriaku 5553, Emeka Atuma 7429, Ikechi Emenike 9446 and Daniel Eke – 1953.

While addressing party members and the press before the result declaration, Honorable Chief Chris Ajah revealed that the National Working Committee (NWC) of APC ordered for Direct Primary election in Abia State and as law abiding members of the party, they have carried out the instruction of the NWC.

He appreciated the NWC for providing a level playing ground for the gubernatorial primaries in Abia State and equally thanked all members of the party that have worked hard to make the direct primary election possible.

In his acceptance speech after his declaration as winner of the direct primary election by Barrister Perfect Okorie the returning officer, Dr. Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari and the NWC for making sure that direct primary was approved for Abia State APC because it provided a level playing ground for all aspirants.

He thanked all members, party leaders and party officials who have stood firm and have made the direct primary process go hitch free.

Ogah called on all other aspirants to close rank, work with him so that APC can take over Abia State come 2023 through the ballot box.

He assured every member that they are numerous opportunities for them to display capacity in government if they all work together to make APC win 202 elections.

When the attention of Ogah was drawn to another gubernatorial primary that held in Abia State and the declaration of High Chief Ikechi Emenike as winner by the press, he insisted that the NWC ordered for Direct Primaries in Abia State and that they have observed the instruction.

Recall that Abia APC have been in a running battle for a long time now with different groups and faction claiming leadership of the party. Even after the inauguration of Dr. Kingsley Ononogbu as the State Chairman of Abia State APC by the NWC, the internal wrangling continued.

This tussle led to the withdrawal of Dr. Alex Otti OFR and other aspirants from the 2023 primaries.
