'sugarcane' is a literary and cultural magazine run by undergraduates at the University of Queensland. It represents a revival, under a new name, of the student magazine 'Galmahra', which ran from 1911 to 1968 and published the work of some of Brisbane’s most significant literary figures, such as David Malouf, Judith Wright, P. Lawrence), Thea Astley, Clem Christesen (founder of 'Meanjin'), Jack L

indsay, Eric Partridge (author of Usage and Abusage), Fred Paterson (Australia’s first and only Communist Party MP), J. Fryer, and Harry Gibbs (former Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia). The Editors hope to provide a forum for intellectually ambitious undergraduates and cultivate a community of engaged readers. We accept literary-critical, philosophical, historical, and art-historical pieces, broader cultural commentary, reviews, translations of foreign literature, as well as short fiction and poetry. Non-fiction submissions should be original, clearly expressed, and closely argued. They should not be too specialist or narrowly academic.
