Winning an argument is no win!
To discover the proposition in a sentence is to understand what the sentence is saying. Stating a proposition in one’s own words is the best way of knowing that you understand the proposition. You should be able to say the same thing as the author said in your own words. Translating and being able to state the same idea in another language is a proof of understanding. If you can’t translate it, you haven’t understood it. The translation doesn’t have to be a verbal replica of the original, it should be faithful to the thought alone, not the words.

We read, most of us, for information and not for understanding. Reading has to take you from a state of lesser understanding to a state of higher understanding. This doesn’t usually happen because we tend to read what we easily and readily understand. You would understand this by the example of reading newspapers, magazines etc which you are able to understand by the skill set you already possess. Such readings don’t increase your understanding, but just supply you with more information, for your understanding was equal to them before you started. Then there is the kind of reading in which one tries to read something which at first he doesn’t completely understand – this is the type which we often ignore and shun. What is meant by this discussion is that there has to be some initial inequality in understanding for some kind of understanding to develop. Your understanding increases only when you are able to overcome this inequality in understanding, or when you approach the understanding of the writer.

Marking, note making and writing on a book form an important part of analytical reading. It helps in keeping you awake and by writing your own reaction you remember the author’s thoughts. Reading has to be like a conversation. Your comments are what you say in the conversation between you and the author. This can be done in the following ways:
1. Underlining of major points or circling.
2. Vertical lines at the margins to emphasize statements already underlined.
3. Star, * or any other doodle, even folding corner of a page.
4. Numbers in a margin to indicate sequence of points in a developing argument.
5. Cross referencing.
6. Writing on the margins of the books, the questions you asked and the answers you got.

#Muslim societies have experienced a decline in #intellectual, #moral, #spiritual, #political, and #economic aspects, leading to an inability to creatively address civilizational challenges. This has caused disarray and self-destructive reactions within Muslim societies, with #criticism arising from discontent individuals. Some attribute this decline to the neglect of #worldly #sciences and the emphasis on #spirituality by scholars, which weakened Muslims' competitiveness against #European rivals and resulted in #colonization. However, the root cause appears to be the abandonment of #philosophical #inquiry in #metaphysical and physical sciences. In the late nineteenth century, Muslim societies became fixated on #material sciences, especially #medicine and #engineering, neglecting #social sciences, causing a #brain #drain and filling the void with immigrants in the West. Ironically, Western overseers often have backgrounds in non-technical subjects.

Many a times external help is sought to understand a book. This should only be done when some parts are unintelligible to you and that you tried your best to understand with the help of all aids within the book. The first aid to reading is the experience relevant to the book, which would include common experience which is shared by many people (relevant in reading fiction, philosophy etc.) or special experience (more relevant in understanding scientific works). One sure way of knowing whether you are putting your experience to right use is by seeing whether you can give a concrete example of a point you feel you understand.
