MELANESIA HAS NO SHORTAGE OF MUSIC TALENT: DG LOUMA

PORT VILA, VANUATU (2 August 2023): Melanesia has no shortage of music talent which can be used to promote happiness and love, not of hate or animosity between us as Melanesians.

Those were the words of the Director General of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat, Leonard Louma, during the opening of the Fest’ Napuan, the largest music festival in Vanuatu during the 7th Melanesian Arts & Culture Festival (MACFEST) last week.

“Music has a language of its own. It is a powerful medium of communication that influences behaviour and must be used responsibly,” he stated.

The Director General appealed to use music for educational purposes, to spread health messages, and to promote development messages.

Director General Louma reaffirmed that MSG has for a long time recognized the value and importance of Music and sought to give prominence to it in its activities.

“The Ministers of Culture concluded their meeting on Friday 21 July 2023 and agreed to have the Musical Festival as an integral part of the Melanesian Arts and Culture Festival,” he said.

DG Louma reassured that at the officials’ level, discussions are being held on how to protect Melanesian music, songs and compositions.

“So, instituting and strengthening implementation of copy right/patent laws and trademark laws in MSG countries are being discussed. This is to ensure that Melanesian artists songs and compositions are not pirated. There are many commercial benefits to these songs and compositions and yet very little, if not none, of these benefits, are seen by our people.”

He stated, “Music evolves with time. In many ways, music reflects our changing customs and evolving culture.”

The challenge he added, is to try and preserve our traditional music, learn to use our traditional musical instruments and incorporate them into our contemporary music repertoire.

“We need to learn the different traditional chants, lullabies and songs and use them in the cultural ceremonies and settings where they are required to be performed,” he added.

Fest’Napuan featured performances from within the Melanesian region.

Nasio Fontaine, also known simply as Nasio, is a reggae artist from the Commonwealth of Dominica.
Nasio is the youngest of seven children born to a Carib mother and father of African descent, in the village of Carte-Bois. When he was eight years old, Nasio began singing in the Bagatelle school and the village Catholic church choirs. Nasio Fontaine Official had a habit of making instruments out of everything he could find. His father, Atto, made his very first instrument, a piece of board with fishing lines for strings. He was inspired at an early age by calypso artists and soul musicians such as Curtis Mayfield, Sam Cooke, and Marvin Gaye.

In 1981, he moved from Dominica to the island of St. Maarten where he became influenced by Rastafari and reggae artists such as Joseph HILL - Culture, burningspearmusic, Jacob Miller, and Bob Marley, to whom he is often compared. He recorded his first 12-inch single "Born to Be Free" in 1986, which sold over 5,000 copies in St. Maarten (the island's biggest ever selling single), and followed it with the EP Babylon is Falling in 1990. His first full-length CD Reggae Power (1994) was followed by Wolf Catcher (1997) and Revolution (1999). Living in the Positive was released by Ras Records in 2004. In 2005 Nasio fontaine recorded the album Universal Cry at Long View in Massachusetts and Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in the UK; collaborating with producer Richard Evans. Universal Cry was released on the Greensleeves Records label in the summer of 2006 to critical acclaim. Nasio Fontaine 's popularity has spread to Africa, where he performed in 2006. He also performed at the Glastonbury Festival Fans in the UK in 2007.

A compilation of material from his earlier albums, Rise Up, was released in 2007.
