Urfalı Babi – Bağkur Gardaşım / Lâmbaya Püf De (1973)

A late addition to the collection, and what a beauty it is. Little introduction needed for the simultaneously smouldering and haunting b-side Lâmbaya Püf De, a track synonymous with Anatolian psychedelic rock’s magnetic maestro Barış Manço (also released in the same year).
Babi (to my ears) does his level best to amp up the seedier side of things; his vocals are lower, sung directly into the ear, the whole production is looser, seemingly coated in a fine layer of filth, with the drums satisfyingly slopping about as it builds to a climactic frenzy. More garage than prog, and all the better for it.
Bonus points for company sleeve, apparently as sought after as the record it houses. Not as clean as I might have liked, but with this kind of rarity beggars indeed can’t be choosers, and I can’t say a little bit of crackle, like a dying fire, doesn’t lend something to the whole mood.

Rajesh Roshan – Lootmaar (1980)

One doesn't want to plan a set too rigorously, it's good to leave yourself a bit of fluidity to follow the feeling on the night and go with the crowd. That said, I'd be lying if I haven't pictured this as a closing track for quite a while now. Some euphoric Bollywood disco by Roshan from the Lootmaar soundtrack, featuring the inimitable Asha Bhosle could be just the ticket at TONIGHT's MONDO DISCOTECA PSICODELICO!
Join us at from 8:30 with very special guest for a whole evening of rare and beautiful dancing music from all around the world. It promises to be a really special one.
FREE ENTRY as always!

Bebeto - Esperanças Mil (1977)

I’ve always loved the music of Brazil, but it’s become something of an obsession recently and I’ll definitely be packing some música popular brasileira in the bag this Friday night This is the second of six albums Bebeto recorded for Copacabana records and it’s been on the want list since I first heard the frenetic electric guitar strums that open ‘Princesa Negra De Angola’ and give way to those killer horns. Can’t wait to see how this energy transfers onto the dancefloor.

เพลิน พรหมแดน – คิดลึกคึดลิก (197?)

Plearn Promdam is serious. What depths hide behind those eyes? I can tell you: a Morricone-inspired fuzz-psych-pop Luk Thung jam. Just one highlight from a superb album.
I doubt you’re finding these kids of cuts anywhere in the Fine City other than MONDO DISCOTECA PSICODELICO this Friday at
Fire from our crates, direct to your ears and dancing feet. Very special guest joins us for our last Underbelly jam of the year. Come through and let’s make it super special.

Super excited to put this out into the world! We’ll be giving away a super limited quantity of our first physical mixtape THIS FRIDAY. We have just 10 of these available and they’re FREE, so be sure to get down early to avoid disappointment.

It’s Only a Dream – Raw and Psychedelic Sounds from Africa

Mondo is proud to present a mix that explores our love of the indigenous and percussive sounds from Africa that have been influenced and distorted by western psychedelic rock and soul. From echo laden and drum heavy Manding jazz to fuzzed up wah-wah fuelled Edo funk and afrobeat, this is a road trip soundtracked by moments of beauty, sadness, joy, anger and uncontrolled youthful exuberance. All tracks are taken from the original vinyl releases and we hope that those that manage to snag a copy enjoy the ride!

Ilaiyaraaja – Manippoor Maamiyaar (1979)

If you caught our most recent Mondo show on you’ll know how much we love the maestro Ilaiyaraaja, as we dedicated the back third of our show to just some of his wonderful synthesised sounds (from an oeuvre of over seven-thousand songs!)
For my own tastes in Indian soundtrack music, Ilaiyaraaja was the right talent in the right era, fusing traditional Tamil folk music and western influences, while making liberal use of contemporaneous technology to produce some of the most captivating, emotionally charged, and bonkers music ever put to film.
Rasigane is the choice from this beautiful LP; a frenetic, uplifting disco banger that I can see lifting the roof (floor?) off Underbelly on the 17th November at MONDO DISCOTECA PSICODELICO. It’s our last MDP of the year so we’re going to make sure it’s a hot one! Featuring veritable vinyl maestro bringing along a whole heap of exciting selections.
Can’t wait! 🇮🇳 ✨💚

Gasper-Lawal – Ajomasé (1980)

Expatriate Nigerian percussionist Lawal serves up the afrobeat heat in his self-released debut. Sadly no clip to share this time but you can dig up some of the gold from this one pretty easily…
Alternatively you can join us in the cosy Underbelly of the on Nov 17th and I’ll pop it on the decks and we can have a dance. Looking forward to finishing up our first year of MONDO DISCOTECA PSICODELICO parties with supreme guest joining us for the fun 🎉
See you there! ✌️

T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo De Cotonou - Benin – Vol. 4 - Yehouessi Leopold Batteur (1978)

Hard driving Afro funk is the name of the game here - as you’d rightly expect from an LP of tracks composed by percussionist extraordinaire Yehouessi Leopold Batteur.
We featured the track Aiha Ni Kpe We on our most recent Mondo radio show on Soul Roots Radio and can’t wait to give it a proper airing on 17th November at the final MONDO DISCOTECA PSICODELICO of the year.
Join us as we share the decks with the tout puissant selector Keith Slater downstairs at The Rumsey Wells for superb dancing music from all around this beautiful planet 💚

Some great finds at the debut of the fair . I was primarily there to sell, but couldn’t resist picking up some fantastic records from Ethiopia, Benin, Ghana and Angola. Felt like a refreshing change from a lot of the other fairs I’ve been to with a lot of people selling from their collections as well as a few new dealers visiting the area. Can’t wait for the next one!

WOW! What a night Friday. So appreciative of everyone that came down and danced like crazy, it was great to see so many familiar and new faces. Loved going on a journey with you all playing some favourite sounds from Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Angola, Nigeria and Cameroon before took us on an epic tour of Japan taking in psych, funk, boogie, disco, techno and even some jungle. So gutted couldn’t join us behind the decks as usual, but he’ll be back and raring to go at our next night on 17th November when we’ll be joined by local DJ legend as our special guest. 🧡

Le Simandou De Bayla – La Confiance (1980)

This drum heavy treat from Guinea went down a storm on the dancefloor at our first night , so it’s definitely going in the bag for THIS FRIDAY. Just love the interplay between the guitars, the back and forth on the vocals, those relentless rhythms and then when the horns hit! 🤌

Fela Kuti - Zombie (1977)

Omar Khorshid – Giant + Guitar (1974)

Khorshid’s first album striking out on his own to forge an exciting new sound that blends surf, psychedelic experimentation, and electronic instrumentation with traditional Arabic forms.

From the opening cover of Nour Al Mallah’s “Rakset El Fadaa” you know this is going to be one hell of a trip. Brooding introductions, percussive breakdowns, fuzzed up psychedelics, delicate melodic passages, sweeping synthesisers all interweave on an album that is restless in its scope but never overwhelming.

This, and other heavyweight rhythms safely packed for Mondo Discoteca Psicodelico on June 23rd at - less than a week to go! See you on the dancefloor ✌️🇪🇬

ﮔﻮﮔﻮش – Googoosh (2011)

Happy to get my hands on this wonderful compilation of lesser-known tracks by the Iranian icon Googoosh (Faegheh Atashin) on the intrepid Finders Keepers Records.
As explained in the enlightening and always engaging liner notes, this isn't a "best of" - instead it's the fruit of many years of searching by master create digger and B-music explorer as he chases the high of some of his earliest encounters with this Persian Pop phenomenon. This curation is what has always kept FK a cut above in my opinion; never-bland, quality pressings, curated with the energy of someone excitedly playing you their latest obsessions.
In recent years this comp has fetched high prices on the second-hand market, fuelled by the ultra-rarity of the selections within (scouring Discogs won't get you very far into this back catalog, armchair collectors). Mercifully, a sealed handful turned up at FK HQ; perfectly aligning with my own awakening investigations into all sounds Arabic.
I'm not sure if there are still any left, but I'd recommend getting across to their site sharpish if this is your cup of tea. Even if they've all gone to new homes, I guarantee it won't be a wasted visit and you'll find something else to intrigue and delight.
Just the thing to bolster my bag ahead of the next Mondo Discoteca Psicodelico on June 23rd at 🇮🇷🧡✈️

Mondo Discoteca Psicodelico
June 23 / Underbelly / Free Entry ✈️

Back again to heat up the basement with all sorts of Afro-Latin, Tropical, and Asian rhythms from all around this fine planet.

Our very special guest this time is the ever-excellent ✨ If you’re a local dancer Damien needs no introduction - a bona fide DJ’s DJ since day dot, his wealth of knowledge and impeccable taste across all styles of music, skills on the ones-and-twos, and keen ear for what will work on the dancefloor all mean he’s in constant demand. What’s more, you would struggle to find someone with a more genuine love for music and the joy of sharing it.

Recently returned from a digging excursion in Columbia expect some supreme Salsa, Cumbia, and all sorts of other Afro-Latin greatness.

Look forward to seeing you tiny dancers on the dancefloor. Starts at 20:30 and, as always, is as free as a bird 💚
