James Cousins: (22 July 1873 -20 February 1956) An Effort of Synthesis by Rene Wadlow

James Cousins was the Irish poet who with A.E.(George Russell) and William Butler Yeats played a major role in the Irish literary revival in the 1890s-1900s. Later he went to India as literary editor for Annie Besant’s newspaper New India and then was one of the organisers of the State University of Travancore, where he headed the Department of Fine Arts and English Studies. Thus he was in a privileged position to study the interaction between Western and Indian thought with a critical eye. Cousins was much appreciated by the Indian philosopher and social activist Sri Aurobindo who was an attentive observer of Western evaluations of Indian culture.

Frantz Fanon (1925-1961) whose birth anniversary we mark on 20 July, was a French psychologist, writer, and participant in the Algerian struggle for independence (1954-1962). He was born in Martinique, then a French colony which now has the status of a Department of France. The bulk of the population are of African descent, having been brought to the West Indies as slaves. Although the basic culture is French, some in Martinique are interested in African culture, and as in Haiti, there are survivals of African religions, often incorporated into Roman Catholic rites.

Pezeshkian, who was Minister of Health, 2001-2005, and a long-time member of the parliament will have to navigate skilfully within the constraints of Iran’s political order in which the Supreme Guide Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his inner circle hold most of the political power. The second round of the election process between Pezeshkian and the conservative hard-liner Saeed Jolili makes Pezeshkian look like a liberal.
