Primus performs the Fanga Dance for a TV broadcast entitled “Pearl Primus: Omowale (Child Returns Home).”

Funga is a Liberian dance that welcomes guests at your home. Primus used Fanga as one of the dances to sustain African dance traditions by presenting dancing as a symbolic act, a daily practice, and a rite.

Dr. Pearl Eileen Primus (November 29, 1919 – October 29, 1994) was an anthropologist, choreographer, and dancer.

Born in Trinidad, Primus was a pivotal figure in bringing African dance to an American audience. As an artist, she made it a mission to promote African dance as an art form worthy of study and performance early on in her career.

Primus work was a response to barbarian myths and a lack of understanding about Africans.

Priest, statesman and lawgiver, he is a co-founder of the Ashanti Empire, helping establish its constitution, laws, and customs.
