Last week my wife and I saw Sound of Freedom.

"Sound of Freedom is a true story film that exposes the darkness of child trafficking. A federal agent saves a boy from traffickers, but his sister is still captive. He embarks on a dangerous mission, risking his life to free her from a fate worse than death."

This movie is not an easy watch, but I think it is a necessary one. We need to be made aware of the reality of child trafficking.

Millions of children are currently being trafficked and that number continues to grow. We can’t turn a blind eye to this problem, or simply hope someone else or some government agency will take care of this. We, as individuals, have power to spread awareness and take action. Please go see this movie!

Amber and I haven’t been able to get it out of our mind since watching and have felt the pull to do something. We have ideas in the works that will require help from individuals. Stay tuned for updates on this. And, if you’ve felt this same pull, please reach out! It takes all of us to make a difference.

Cash has begun to grasp more concepts of Christmas this year, and we’ve realized this is the year to start laying the foundation of both his understanding and our traditions.

I’ve struggled wanting to pass on the traditional Santa who “knows if you’ve been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake.” Or the ever watching elf on a shelf.

It’s been important to me that we keep Christ at the center of our Christmas.

How has that looked this year?

It has started with the nativity scenes we have placed around our home and explaining this is the time of year we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

We’ve decided to keep the joy and excitement of Santa in our celebration. However, we’ve explained to our little one that Santa shares his love for Jesus with us by bringing gifts, much like the Wise Men bringing gifts to the newborn Savior.

I encourage you to find ways to keep Christ in Christmas this year.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

When I started this podcast, Pat Neel was at the top of my list of guests I wanted to interview.

I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to hear about his experience as a dad and grandpa, and to discuss how fatherhood has impacted our view on God.

I didn’t always get along with my dad. I didn’t want to be anything like him. So much so that I changed my last name to be different. Despite all of that, he never stopped reaching out and trying to be there for me.

I recall one day he told me he wanted to have a relationship with me and it didn’t matter how deep or superficial it was, and he would respect the relationship I wanted to have. Those words sunk into hard heart and softened it. I suddenly realized how much he was trying, and how much I was resisting. A lot of healing and building has happened since that day.

I’m grateful for my father, for his love, his presence, and his dedication. He’s the best dad for me and the best granddad to Cash.

Happy Father’s Day to all dads and dad figures today!

Yesterday, we got to see the face of our little Riggs. I felt that excitement of expecting a child and a hint of that unconditional love of a parent. While I’m feeling that joy, there are families out there mourning the loss of their little ones. While I kiss my boy goodnight, a parent is staring at the cold, empty bed in their child’s room. I can’t fathom the depth of pain of losing a child. My heart aches for them, and I feel helpless.

Despite that suffering, politicians and political parties will use this event as leverage for their platforms. We simply have to open our social media to watch this add fuel to the flame of political toxicity that burns hotter and hotter every day in our society. My Wall Street Journal app has sent me notifications almost every hour since with an update. I’m sure if I cared to turn on the tv, there would be practically endless coverage.

I don’t pretend to have even an inkling of a solution. I don’t love the contentious debate that erupts over them. What I do know is that if there is any hope for a better future, it begins with me and my children. It begins with ending conflict and having empathy. It begins with teaching my children to love their neighbor and striving to do the same myself. So, I will allow my heart to ache and feel that pain and discomfort. I will pray for those families and mourn with them where I can. I’ll hold my boy close and try every day to help him be better than I ever was

For the last week I've gone to sleep in a warm bed. I've woken up and driven to the gym, school, and work. I've come home and had a nice dinner, or gone out to eat. I've seen family and loved ones. I've kissed my wife and played outside with my little boy. But this can't be said for the citizens of Ukraine.

My heart aches for them. I haven't had to worry about my safety, or fleeing for it. I haven't had to worry about food or where I'll sleep. I haven't had to wonder if this will be the last time I kiss my wife or see my son. But they have.

Our lives are comfortable. So comfortable we can sit and argue about how things would be different depending on who is in office, or complain about a rise in gas prices. We can forget that there are people out there truly suffering.

So, let's put aside political parties, race, gender, sexual orientation, material possession, and geographic location and truly unite. Hold your family and loved ones close. Teach your kids to be kind to others. Donate if you can. Pray to whatever higher being you believe in.

We may not be able to change the world as a whole, but we can change the world where we stand by looking at what truly matters and showing love and kindness to the human beings around us.

I think it's a pretty Dadly thing to love your wife and mother of your kids. It's a goal of mine to make sure my kids know and see me love their mother.

I think I made a pretty darn good choice with Amber. She's an amazing mother to our little boy, and helps me be a better father every day.

I am grateful to have her as my wife. I am grateful for her unconditional love and her endless support.

Happy Valentine's Day to the love of my life!

Becoming a Father was like immediately stepping into a large pair of shoes; I suddenly realized how much growing I still had to do. But I am grateful for this title and all it signifies. I treasure the look of love in my boy's eyes. I strive every day to be the father he thinks I am.

Yesterday I took a break between assignments to clean up the giant piles of leaves in our yard. Naturally Cash wanted to jump into them. And for the first hour, we had a good time between jumping into the leaves and putting them into our green bin.
Towards the end he stopped playing and became solely focused on filling the bucket I had given him with leaves. For a solid 20 minutes he and I were filling and dumping, and every so often he would look at me and smile.
In one of those moments, I was filled with a love and appreciation for him. He can't verbally say, "I love you" or "Dad, I want to be with you" but he said it all with his helping hands and smile.
Those moments make all the difficult ones worth it. Those moments show me how beautiful being a father is. I pray to always be the dad worthy of his love, appreciation, and emulation.

What is dadliness?
Many of us know the classic portrayal of a dad. The stern, quiet figure at the head of a table. And while I believe in stoicism, I think being a dad goes much deeper than that.
Dadliness is being a dad that is selfless, patient, loving, and kind. It is being there at 4am when your kid wakes up to rock them back to sleep. It's the tickle fights and diaper changes. It's lending a non judgemental listening ear to your teenager's struggles. It's being present for all of their big moments, but most importantly, for every moment in between. It's your kids knowing they can pick up the phone at any time and talk to you.
So, what is dadliness to you?

Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year! I may have been counting down since October but I (mostly) hold it in out of respect to all the Scrooges out there 😉
