In Greek mythology, Alcyoneus was the antagonist of the hero Heracles. He was considered to be one of the Gigantes, the children of the Titans Uranus and Gaea.

In the Gigantomachy, the war that happened between the Giants and the Olympians, Heracles and Alcyoneus fought each other. However, Alcyoneus was immortal while stepping on his native land and would revive if anyone would try to kill him. So, when Heracles hit him with an arrow and Alcyoneus was about to stand up again, Athena advised Heracles to drag him out of his homeland; that was how Alcyoneus died. Alcyoneus had seven daughters called Alkyonides, who threw themselves into the sea after their father died.

Pueblos nativos de Norteamérica (1972)

Este mapa étnico, diseñado por George Stuarty publicado por National Geographic en 1972, muestra los diferentes pueblos nativos de Norteamérica antes de 1492.

Tal y como relata la ilustración, en la parte superior derecha, antes de la llegada de los europeos a América, se estima que todo el continente tenía entre 6 y 60 millones de habitantes que hablaban unas 550 lenguas distintas. A causa de la colonización y la represión posterior, la población nativa se vio reducida a territorios muy limitados y, en muchas ocasiones, lejanos de su hogar.

El mapa busca representar todos los pueblos, aunque la extensión y localización es aproximada, dada la ausencia de fuentes. Los pueblos nativos aparecen agrupados en doce grandes familias:

Ártico, en azul (incluye también a los aleutianos).

Subártico, en amarillo

Costa noroeste, en morado

Meseta, en verde oliva

Gran cuenca, en marrón

California, en verde

Suroeste, en amarillo claro

Grandes llanuras, en naranja (incluye agricultores y cazadores).

Noreste, en verde claro

Sureste, en rosa

Mesoamérica, en amarillo

Área del caribe, en violeta

El mapa también incorpora ilustraciones de algunos de los pueblos más representativos que han sobrevivido hasta el siglo XX, como es el caso de los inuit, los cheroquis o los zapotecas.
