School will be closed for tomorrow.

Schools will be closed in Leon County on Tuesday, May 14 due to anticipated severe weather entering our area beginning at 6:00 a.m. potentially making roads impassable and compounding the impacts of the previous severe weather in our area.

The decision to close schools was made after consulting with the National Weather Service, Leon County Emergency Management and getting feedback from every LCS principal.

We are in communication with the Florida Department of Education in regards to required instructional minutes to confirm that our seniors in the class of 2024 will have enough hours to graduate without having to extend the school year.

Our high schools will be adjusting their AP & IB schedules and each school will communicate directly with those students waiting to take a test. Make ups will be scheduled during the required late testing windows identified by the AP and IB organizations—not LCS.

Bus routes will be checked in the afternoon to identify any possible issues prior to Wednesday.

Non-school based District staff is expected to arrive to work by 9:00 a.m. tomorrow.

If weather permits, some schools may proceed with afterschool and evening activities.

12:35pm ET - Timing of the squall line to our west. These are general estimates and folks need to make sure they're paying attention to these storms continuously through the afternoon and ready to take action if a warning is issued.
Our attention currently is on severe weather bringing potential for damaging wind gusts, hail, and some potential for tornadoes. After the severe portion moves through, our attention turns to flooding potential and to our west they're already getting reports of flooding across the Panhandle per some reports forwarded from our co-workers in NWS Mobile.

WCTV.tv - After a strong line of storms tore through the capital city Friday, Leon County School superintendent Rocky Hanna addressed the district’s decision-making process both leading up to the storm and as it became evident that the school day would be far from normal.

In an interview with WCTV, Hanna said LCS consulted with the National Weather Service to make an informed decision on whether schools would remain open or close on Friday. He said the district felt “reassured” that there would be no severe impacts.

“After being reassured we made the decision to operations as normal. Unfortunately right before 7 a.m. the alarms went off,” Hanna said. He added that LCS tried to keep operations normal, but there were “logistical obstacles” that prevented the district from continuing the school day.

WCTV reached out the the National Weather Service for comment on the situation. Any information they share will be added to this article.

Timeline

Around 7 a.m. Friday LCS announced all buses would delay picking up elementary and middle school students until the severe weather threat passed. Buses parked at local high schools to stay in place.

Shortly after 9 a.m., the district shared an update that it was closing for the remainder of the day. Parents were instructed to pick up their children from school.

LCS later shared a brief video from the superintendent explaining the process behind the moves.
