Cultivating Gratitude, all year long.

by: Nicole Tieri Cornell

When I recently approved an instagram account for my daughter, who is a professional performer and needed a presence on the app, I did so with admonishments. One of these warnings included the pesky tendency of comparing material possessions with others, even at her young age. I mean, the kid shares a room with one of her 3 big brothers, basically in an eat-in kitchen (more on that in another article), and I knew she’d be privy to an insta world of girls with sprawling bedrooms and backyards with pools and cars with actual driveways. While she promised to focus on how blessed she is to live in the performance capital of the world, to shelter in a safe and warm space with gobs of love surrounding her, I knew we needed to up our gratitude game.

Enter an inexpensive, self-adhesive chalkboard wall paper that I affixed to my older boys’ bedroom door, a chalk pen dangling from a ribbon next to it.

“Ok, troops. Here’s my issue. And I’m sure it often is yours too. Sometimes I feel ungrateful or resentful for our tiny space, or any perceived thing I’m lacking in my life, physically or emotionally.

When these thoughts creep in, I’m going to challenge myself to write down a token of gratitude on this board. Let’s see how many things we usually take for granted we can compile in two weeks’ time.”

Hers what we’ve got:

My husband’s jobs.

Legs that work.

Mom’s baked goods after school.

Indoor plumbing.

My bed.

My computer and phone.

My blanket that has the fur of the kittens I begged for all over it.

My wife’s welcome home hug.

We’re not just blessed. We’re spoiled. And it’s good to remind ourselves of it, not just in this month of November.

Here are are few other suggestions for families and individuals to cultivate gratitude all year long.

Go on a gratitude nature scavenger hunt. Focus on your senses: what smells make you happy? What sounds delight you? What tactile times bring joy? What glorious sights do you bypass daily?

Is drawing more your thing? Try this prompt (photo with more ideas in column). Render something that makes you happy. A memory that brings you joy. A person who inspires you. A book that comforts you. A meal that delights.

Try a monthly gratitude wall with post it notes. Each day write on a post it what you’re grateful for in that day and review it at the end of the month.

Try a yearly gratitude box:

Each month have each person write on a slip of paper what they’re thankful that month, and on New Year’s Eve, read the slips before the ball drops.

A gratitude journal is also a great idea, as is a thankful ABC exercise, where you challenge one another on a random day to write down what they are thankful for with each letter of the alphabet.

I will continue to claim this community as something my family is extremely grateful for throughout the year, and I hope, no matter how you choose to recognize your blessings, you know you are a gift to this neighborhood as well
