Bedrock Records
š£Super Progressive Track of the Weekš£
Track: āSuppose We Areā
Artist: BP
Label: @bedrockrecords
Bedrock Records starting the year strong with the āSuppose We Areā EP release from BP. On this release we get the rhythmic and vibey āSuppose We Areā and then the deeper āReaching Starsā.
āSuppose We Areā features an awesome vocal sample from Alan Wattsā passage āThe Dream Of Lifeā. The message is that rather having everything good all the time, what makes us human is our innate pursuit of an unknown outcome. I think in this scene we can all relate to that. I think of a @djjohndigweed set, filled with highs and lows, always curving. He never gives us everything at once, but the special moments comes when he gives us just enough. I find that sentiment and the feeling of that moment in this track.
You can stream the track on Spotify and purchase on Bandcamp. Iām currently making a new releases playlist on Spotify which this will definitely be featured in.
In the words of Bedrockā¦ āStarting the year off as we mean to go on. Enjoy.ā

Progressive House
Those who say the sun has set on the progressive sound just remember The Sun Also Rises.
Earlier this week, techno artist @anfisaletyago posted about listening to more and more trance and progressive tracks and asked her followers for recommendations. Thousands of comments poured in recommending tracks from labels like @hoojchoonsofficial, Platipus, R&S, @global_underground and artists like @oliverliebmusic, @officialrabbitinthemoon, @djsashaofficial, and Nalin & Kane.
Anfisa is an artists whose sound resonates with the youngest generation of clubbers who have pursued a hard techno sound with relentless energy and tempo. Itās been one of the dominant sounds of the past five years. It reminds me of what I learned about the scene in 1995 and 1996. Around this time, one of the most dominant club sounds was the hard-hitting, NRG sound cultivated by Tony de Vit. I think his Global Underground 001 in Tek Aviv perfectly represents this. But one thing that happened was that a lot of younger clubbers would eventually find the progressive sound through artists like Tony de Vit. I think weāre going to see that trend appearing again now.
This scene is always in a state of flux and always reacting to itself, but I think weāre going to be seeing a growing excitement around the progressive sound amongst the newest generation of clubbers.
What do you think? Something to think about over the weekendā¦

Larry Levan
āThatās my function. To make people party.ā Larry Levan
Kicking off 2024 by going back to the beginning. These days, being a DJ is about so many different things. Playing the biggest gigs. Filming your sets for social media. Having the most followersā¦ Larry Levan reminds us what itās all about.

Twilo
āI think the beauty of it was that it didnāt start off absolutely rammed jammed packed. It was a very organic feel to that night. It grew by word of mouth.ā
In an interview with Pacha, @djjohndigweed shares some rare insights to what made his and @djsashaofficial residency so special.
Obviously, first and foremost were the Phazon sound system and of course John and Sashaās track selection and technical skills of DJing, but I think John has a point in saying that only when something starts naturally and organically can it really become a transformative club night. Itās cool to learn that John and Sashaās success in New York was earned month after month, and the buzz wasnāt coming from social media, but rather clubbers sharing stories with other clubbers. John says this is how Twilo became a clubbing destination for not only New Yorkers, but clubbers around the world. You had to go experience it for yourself.
And I think Johnās insights are especially pertinent as we head into 2024. So many people in the industry believe that in order to find success you must spend thousands on social media advertising, but I definitely donāt think that is true if you are trying to build something truly special in the modern day. The recipe is still the sameā¦ word of mouth and patience. Iām very proud of the fact that Iāve never spent a dollar on advertising for Super Progressive, and that itās become a community that has grown by the same word of mouth method.
You might sell out one event by spamming ads over social media, but to do something truly special, you have to let the music and the experience speak for themselves. True clubbers and fans of the music will find out, and when they do, they will become fans forever. I think thatās missing in todayās clubbing landscape that doesnāt get talked about as much.
If I could go into a Time Machine, 530 West 27th Street in 1996 would be my first stop.
Question: What was the buzz surrounding Joh
āThis is just my little nirvana.ā @djshadow
In the amazing 2001 documentary āScratchā, we meet DJ Shadow in the now famous Sacramento record shop appropriately named āRecordsā. Over 25 years ago, DJ Shadow was probably spending his Friday afternoon lost in stacks of records in this shopās basement, searching for the samples that he would bring together on his legendary album āEndtroducingā¦ā
In this clip, DJ Shadow touches on the spiritual nature of digging for records. When I meet you all at events and such, so many people say that even more so than camera phones and CDJs, the thing that is most different about the earliest days of this scene is how the record shops used to be the center of the underground ecosystem. Itās where you would go to not only discover music but also meet other like minded people. At night time, the community came together at the clubs, but in the day time, it was at the record shops. Today, we have apps like Spotify spitting us music recommendations, but in the record shop, you had employees who actually knew you and your music preferences, adding a human element to music discovery that was based in real life relationships.
Being new to this music and also born in 1994, this is an experience that I feel like I missed out on, but there are still amazing record shops with passionate people running them, and itās something Iām planning to seek out more in the upcoming year.
Itās a question Iād like to ask all of you who lived this eraā¦ how important were record shops to the health of the underground scene, and was it truly a spiritual experience to finally find a record you heard your favorite DJ play in the club?
Happy Friday everyone ā¤ļø

āI was probably more well known in the North than I was in the South because of Renaissance and everything like thatā¦ decided to call the night Northern Exposure because it was like the Northern vibe exposed to down South.ā @djjohndigweed
Iām sure Iām not alone when I say that when I think of āNorthern Exposureā I immediately think of John and Sashaās legendary mix compilation album, but itās cool to see John explain the origin to the now iconic name.
Iām always learning new things. Because of the way Renaissance: The Mix Collection introduced me to both John and Sasha, I always thought they DJd together at the club in Mansfield, but that wasnāt the caseā¦
John explains in this clip that the duo started playing together after John invited Sasha to play one of his Bedrock parties following Renaissance. John didnāt even advertise Sashaās appearance at his event (could you imagine showing up to this gig to learn that out of nowhere Sasha would be joining John on the decks). The duo clicked immediately and began playing nights together in Brighton at a club called The Zap. These parties were then called Northern Exposure because, as John said, it was āthe Northern vibe exposed to down South.ā
The rest is history. Twilo. The Northern Exposure album series. And a DJ partnership that persists to this day.
You can watch the full interview on @clubavision YouTube channel which has become my go to reference for interview clips like these.
Whether it be the events or the album, what does āNorthern Exposure mean to you?

SUPER PROGRESSIVE RROM 2 TAKEOVER!!!!
On March 2, progressive house legends @guyjdiary and @jodywisternoff are playing in Cardiff at Districtā¦ and Super Progressive will be taking over ROOM 2! Not only will I be DJing but I will also be helping program the artists in Room 2. We will be featuring 2 local legends, Cardiffās old guard with @jimpy_dj and Cardiffās current star @jodybarrmusic, as well as @mia_aurora_uk of @anjunadeep and ACiDTRAX.
This is a dream opportunity for me. Iāve posted about it many times on the pageā¦ as much as we all love the main room, Iāve discovered that the heart, soul, and future of this scene can be found in Room 2 and Iām going to do everything I can to make sure this Room 2 experience perfectly compliments what the legends are doing in the Main Room.
I hope this is the first of many Super Progressive Room 2 Takeovers throughout clubland, but it all starts with doing a great job in Cardiff. I love the idea of SP helping build the reputation of Room 2 at any progressive house event featuring the legends weāve loved for years and years. It feels right. Iām just beyond stoked and grateful for this chance, so to everyone who has supported SP on this journey, all I can say is thank you.
LETS GO!!!!!!!!

Choose Lifeā¦ I donāt think thereās a better marriage between film and score than the final scene of Trainspotting. On the surface, Rentonās monologue of hope for a better future is matched by the ruthless progression of Underworldās Born Slippy. But looking deeper, the connection is stronger between scene and song.
With its chants of āLager! Lager! Lager!ā many have associated āBorn Slippyā as a drinking anthem, but itās quite the opposite.
Underworld frontman and writer of this track shares, āWe used to go out drinking in Soho and I ended up in the Ship on Wardour Street. All the lyrics were written on that night. A drunk sees the world in fragments and I wanted to recreate that... The first time we played it live, people raised their lager cans and I was horrified because I was still deep into alcoholism. It was never meant to be a drinking anthem; it was a cry for help.ā
Similarly, I honestly think the final scene of āTrainspottingā shares a different message than what most think. On the surface, Rentonās speech claims heās on the straight and narrow, and heās looking forward to it. But how many times have we looked in the mirror and said this speech to ourselves when times are tough, only to return to old, destructive habits in just a few daysā time?
I think a lot of times in life we think we the right path is the one that we see everyone else around us take, and that if weāre not on that path, weāre somehow falling behind. We give ourselves speeches to convince ourselves that we are excited to change our ways. But the mad ones know that deep down, thereās more that life has to offer if you have the courage and resilience to go after it.
And Iām not disrespecting the path that Renton outlines. Itās honorable, filled with sacrifice, often in the name of providing for your family, which is extremely noble and the right thing to do. Iām just saying I donāt necessarily believe Renton when he gives this speec
āFor me, heās my favorite DJ. And he always will be.ā
@mixmag used to do an awesome series when they would ask one superstar DJ who their favorite DJ of all time isā¦ and for @jameszabiela the answer is undoubtedly @djsashaofficial
Itās awesome to hear one great DJ have such high respect for those who came before them, and I think if you polled the progressive landscape today, James wouldnāt be the only one to say that Sashaās mixes set them down the DJ path.
I had a great conversation with @jodybarrmusic down in Cardiff and he told me an awesome story about how when he was young, he got his first pair of turntables, bought all the records on Sashaās GU013 in Ibiza, and tried to emulate the mix as he heard it on the album. Jodyās story is similar to so many others around the world. I think the magic of these mixes from the 90s is not only in their technical mixing brilliance, but the fact that they sparked wonder in kids around the world who then wanted to become DJs themselves.
Whoās your favorite DJ of all time? Would love to hear your story, thanks. Have a great Sunday š

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to one of the rare āDJās DJā Mr. Danny Howells!
Itās no secret that @danny_howells78 is one of my all time favorite DJs. Some things I love about Danny are as followsā¦
1. Heās an awesome person, and this is backed up by every single person you speak to in the industry and on the dancefloor about Danny. Heās incredibly nice, and has never let his fame get to his head. Heās the most down-to-earth Superstar DJ Iāve met and sets a great example for me about always keeping it real and staying humble.
2. He held a residency at ARC in New York right around the same time Danny Tenaglia held his residency at Vinylā¦ fun fact, Danny Howells took a flight after his gig all the way in BRAZIL to New York to catch the last few hours of DTās final show at Vinyl, which lasted over 24 hours so DH was able to catch most of it!
3. When his first Essential Mix hit the airwaves, he was still working a his daytime job as a psychiatric nurseā¦ imagine that today, a DJ on the Essential Mix who still has an out-of-industry day job, walking into work and having your co-workers casually say āHey, loved your Essential Mix last night!ā
4. Heās made an art form out of the opening set - I think this comes from the fact that some of his earliest sets occurred warming up for John Digweed at Bedrock parties at Hastings Pierā¦ some things stay with you for life!
5. The first party Danny ever DJd was a birthday party he threw with his friend for Prince in Hastings. Prince obviously didnāt show up, but I always love how Dannyās love for music outside of your typical club music shines through in his sets.
6. Danny joined me for the Super Progressive Live Event at the Troubadour in London and it will forever be one of the greatest days of my life and Iām forever thankful, grateful, and indebted to him for that! Iāll never forget it
This birthday moment in the clip above was captured at Womb in Tokyo, Japan in 2007 (thank you to LisatecaTV f
Itās one of the most popular clips of this era of clubbing, but I feel like it would be the best place to start in terms of one of the most influential places in the history of club cultureā¦ Quadrant Park.
Earlier in the week, I posted about how all roads lead back to the Haciendaā¦ but many were quick to comment that in fact those roads continue on westward to Bootle, Liverpool where Quadrant Park stood.
In this clip, you can see the entire club exploding to N-Joiās āAnthemāā¦ one of the many anthems of this club. On YouTube, thereās an awesome video/documentary capturing the entirety of this club night in 1990, and watching it feels like stepping into a time machine. Itās really some of the best documentation of club culture at its peak, and itās remarkable a video like this even exists. Just search Quadrant Park on YouTube and user Pabloscutt1975 has posted the video in its entirety.
Iām not sure who the specific DJ was on the decks in this clip, but the initial resident DJ of the club was Mike Knowler, who would then invite Andy Carroll to join him as well as James Barton (Carroll and Barton would go on to help found Cream following the closing of Quadrant Park on 31 December 1991). Guest DJs at Quadrant Park included Laurent Garnier, Sasha, Frankie Bones, Fabio, and Grooverider among many more.
Other tracks played on this club night includeā¦
4 For Money - Itās A Moment In Time
N-Joi - Techno Gangsters
Robin Wants Revenge - Robin Wants Revenge
Marina Van Rooy - Let You Go
Outphase - Iām In Love
Swan Lake - The Dream
Digital Boy - Koko
Baby Ford - Oochy Koochy
What are your memories of Quadrant Park? š

āIf you know the way broadly, you will see it in all things.ā Miyamoto Musashi
This quote represents my feelings when it comes to underground music, which is why today Iām venturing outside the world of progressive house and into jungle with Goldieās āTimelessā which was his debut album released in 1995.
Goldie says that when it comes to jungle, āyou can make up your mind what you want to hear from it. What sound you want to get out of it.ā While you can say this about any piece of quality music that speaks to you, I find āTimelessā to be the perfect balance of abstract and direct. Each person might take different things away from the album, but its impact and magnitude is clear and consistent.
I read an awesome comment on Discogs that said āInner City Life was the sound of rage turned sour by Thatcherism.ā In 1995, progressive underground music took a turn for the epic, represented by albums like BTās āImaā and John Digweedās āEssential Mixā takes you to far away places on the backs of ten minute tracks. Goldie does the opposite, taking you straight into the inner cities, bringing you face to face with urban culture and the issues present.
Going back to the aforementioned quote, cultivating a deep understanding of progressive underground music has allowed me to approach other forms of underground music with the same sophistication and sensibility, which only adds to my appreciation of āTimelessā.
Do you think different forms of underground music or completely separate, or do they have more in common than one might think?

All roads lead back to the Hacienda.
Hear from @laurent_garnier, @djsashaofficial, @daveseamandj, @_jondasilva___, and @mr_dave_haslam as they trace their roots back to the legendary Manchester club.
A lot of YouTube digging went into this short compilation, but some resources I found to be super helpful and interested are episodes of āThe Edge Video Magazineā as well as @clubavision so if youāre weird like me and canāt get enough of these interviews from the 80s and 90s go check them out on YouTube.

During Amsterdam Dance Event, @sanderkleinenberg took Super Progressive on a Progressive House History Tour of Amsterdam, and the whole day was real dream come true. The full video is now on YouTube and the link to the video is in my bio.
Sander picked me up on his scooter and we visited Outland Records, the studio where @djsashaofficial and @tomholkenborg produced āAirdrawndaggerā, and then we went to visit āMelkwegā and āParadisoā. Throughout the video, Sander shared some awesome bits of history about each location and also shared some reflections on his incredibly unique career.
I look up to Sander in so many ways. Iāll never forget that right when I was starting Super Progressive, he agreed to do an interview that ended up being one of my all-time favorite interviews Iāve ever done. Since then, heās been incredibly supportive of all Iām trying to do with Super Progressive.
Iām a kid who is really living life on my own terms and dedicating my life to my true passion, and a lot of that inspiration comes from Sander. This was really a special project for me, so I hope you all enjoy the full video on YouTube. Thanks everyone for all the support ā¤ļø

Thereās a saying in the UK that the more north you go, the nicer the people are. Based on this past weekendās trip@to Glasgow, Iāve found this to be trueā¦ you could also easily substitute the word ānicerā for ācrazierā because Iāve never seen a group of people so āUp For Itā.
In the span of 24 hours, I got to see John Digweed, Sasha, Eelke Kleijn, Miss Melera, and Tim Green, while also visiting iconic club locations like The Arches and Sub Club, and I finally got to see what Skyline was all about

āThatās what I love about the music that we play. Itās called progressive, but it actually progresses in its change. Itās always evolving.ā Anthony Pappa
In this clip, Anthony Pappa breaks down why Global Undergroundās Nubreed series came at the perfect time. Not only were we moving into a new millennium, but the technologies involved in production and DJing were rapidly evolving as well. I think Anthonyās mix specifically captures this evolution perfectly.
If there was a revival of the Nubreed series in 2023, which artists do you think best showcase where the underground sound is headed?
#progressivehouse #techno #trance #undergroundmusic #globalunderground #vinyl #vinylcollection #housemusic
One of the most beautiful things about progressive underground music is that itās not defined by one sound or style, but the blending of multiple sounds and styles. This makes it a unique genre of music.
Here, we see @moby speak to this point on MTVās ā120 Minutesā. Moby is a producer who canāt be defined by one story. One minute youāre spacing out on a dancefloor to āGoā, and the next minute youāre walking down the street feeling like Jason Bourne with āExtreme Waysā blasting in your headphones. Heās a great producer to speak to this point.
Uniquely, Moby frames it as liberating to record just one style of music (with Third Eye Blind playing as the victim here). He compares it to a chef always using the five same ingredients, rather than building every dish from the ground up utilizing every single ingredient godās green earth has to offer. Of course, Moby has chosen the path of limitless possibilty, the same path so many underground progressive producers walk.
So I pose a questions to the producers out thereā¦ is the limitless possibilities of progressive music a blessing or a burden? Hopefully this makes for an interesting conversation in the comments.

@thechemicalbrothers in heavy rotation this week at SP HQ, specifically their āExit Planet Dustā albumā¦ and whenever āSound To The Sirenā blasts through the speakers, I enter the groove.
āSong To The Sirenā was actually first released in 1992 when The Chemical Brothers were known as The Dust Brothers. In fact, it was their first single. But when the group had to change their name because of another group already going by the Dust Brothers, they re-released the track on the legendary Boysā Own label as The Chemical Brothers.
