Together with Black History Month Belgium, we will be talking to musicians in the context of this year's theme, namely documenting and archiving the experiences of black people in Belgium.
Black Belgian artists of different generations and from different genres come together to discuss their experiences in the music and entertainment industry, how things have evolved (or not) over the years, their mechanisms for surviving and thriving, even in genres and spaces where they were not expected to exist, and even less, to succeed. This panel discussion will be with Charlotte Adigéry, Farida Amadou and Isabelle Kabatu and moderated by Zap Mama.
Participants:
Zap Mama is one of the most influential singers in our Belgian music history. Her voice is the most important instrument for her creations in which she fuses soul, gospel and African rhythms with pop elements.
Charlotte Adigéry gained momentum with her first EP "Zandoli". Together with producer Bolis Popul she makes danceable synth pop in which humor and spontaneity are the most important ingredients.
Bassist Farida Amadou has shown herself (inter) nationally in her, so far, short musical career in challenging collaborations with greats such as Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Hanne De Backer, Wolf Eyes, Audrey Lauro and in 2018 she was even part of from the Liège punk combo Co***ne P**s.
Isabelle Kabatu has developed an international career as an opera soprano. She has already performed on the biggest stages, including La Scala di Milano, Opéra Bastille Paris, Gran Teatre del Licieau Barcelona,... Her repertoire consists mainly of Italian (Aïda, Tosca, Il Trovatore, Forza del destino, Manon Lescaut), German (Tannhaüser, Salome, Der Rosenkavalier) and French (Le Cid, Thaïs, Dialogues des Carmélites) opera heroines.
