Dreamcorp LLC
-
I first heard about the show Dreamcorp LLC while the first season was still being made. It combined all of the things I like by a bunch of people I like into one thing. I watched it on the Adult Swim app back when you could watch shows on it and it absolutely ruled and I've thought about it a lot since that first season came out. For a show that blends both psychedelic rotoscope animation and comedy so well- it has SO much heart. I've started rewatching it so I can get into the third season which I haven't seen yet. Anyway- CLEARLY I love this show so I did a lil animation of the exterior of the office which has a vibe that I really like and try and capture with a lot of these animations. I can't recommend this show enough- the writing, animation, music- EVERYTHING is so good. Do watch!

Snow in the Middle of the Night
-
I always got a lot of flack for my weird sleep schedule (5am-noon) but honestly the middle of the night is the only time I can focus and work properly. It's WAY too easy for me to get distracted- I live in the city and it’s impossible to find another time when there’s long stretches of calm and quiet. If you stay up on a night it's supposed to snow you get to see little scenes like this and it feels like you’re in another part of the world altogether for some reason. There’s something about snow falling under street lights that’s so incredibly calming. I've tried to recreate it in animations a few times but I always realize I've left something out every time I experience it again. Maybe it's just impossible to capture but it's nice to try.

Last Day of Summer - Loop
-
I took a little bit of time away from working on new animations to figure out what I wanted to do this year with this animating in general. I've had a few ideas like adding more characters into things and making more short series but I'd also like to start throwing short loops into the mix like this one. I do a lot of animating outside of the stuff I post here and I'm doing my best trying to balance working on those things and the animations I do for myself that I can post here. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm going to start posting a lot longer animations and sometimes shorter animations. ANYWAY this was one of my favourite shots from this last year and I wanted to make a little loop for it. Here it is. Enjoy THE LOOP. Oh and I have an online print shop now!

Still lots of people asking what I use to make these- I use Blender for everything.

Thank You
-
Last week I remade my favourite animation I did from this past year. I did a bit of tinkering so it's a little bit different and looks a little more like the style I have going now. I also wrote my own music for it. It's a different vibe than the original but the heart of it is the same. I wanted to thank everyone that's followed me this year and commented, messaged me and all that. It's meant an incredible amount to me to see that people like the work I'm putting out and can connect with it in some way. These animations are all analogous to questions and things I don't have the answers to at the time of making them so the whole process has been very therapeutic. If these have been at all therapeutic to you then I'm absolutely thrilled about that. Thanks again!

In case you were wondering about how I made this- I use Blender for the majority of everything here.

Lil Ghost S02E03
-
Probably not the ending you were expecting but getting over loss isn't always easy so I wanted to do something to show that a little better rather than having it resolve right away. There's more Lil Ghost stories to come and I'm personally interested in Lil Ghost's relationship to their house since so many people asked about it. To me the house seems like a burden to Lil Ghost since it was so easy for their new friend to leave. They were teaching new ghost to let go of their past self when Lil Ghost hadn't necessarily let go of theirs (the house). ANYWAY this is all inside baseball at this point but I owe an explanation after this polar opposite ending compared to the last series. I'm excited to show you what Lil Ghost gets up to next but it wont be for another little bit. I'll let ya know when I schedule it. I'd like to say February. Temporarily. Temporary February. Works phonetically!

All the work I do here is done in Blender. Blender is great. Give Blender a shot, why not?

Lil Ghost Series 2 Part 2
-
This one gets a lil sad so here's a fun story. Back when I was a pimply chubby 10 year old, my favourite things were comics and laser tag. Whenever I used to go to Laser Quest I'd choose the name of my favourite Avenger at the time, which was Hawkeye, as my nickname for the readouts when you get hit. This one time I go- the place is packed- multiple kids birthdays all happening simultaneously- its a mad house. I tell the guy entering the names for people "Hawkeye please!" he laughs and he's like "Okay bud!". I play the whole game and any time I hit someone they'd look at me weird. Like I get it, Hawkeye isn't the most POPULAR Avenger but I like him dang it! He's the approachable one! Anyway- the game ends and we all pick up our sheets to see how everyone did. I don't mind tooting the old ego horn but I crushed that game- I was zapping EVERYONE in there. That's when I hear people saying "who's Hot Guy?" "Yea he got me a bunch!" people weren't happy with Hot Guy but that's when I realized that sounds a lot like Hawkeye and I checked my sheet and sure enough I was the Hot Guy everyone hated. A very first for me. The guy at the register either misheard when I said Hawkeye or decided to get a lil pranksy but either way he came up with the best tag possible for how I presented myself. Well done 1995 Laser Tag guy.

Lil Ghost Series 2 Part 1
-
Just as I promised back in October/November Lil Ghost is back with their new ghost friend! I had a bunch of story ideas for these two but wanted to give you all a little bit of them hanging out until we get into that. I've been half debating putting Lil Ghost into my non Lil Ghost posts. VERY interested to know what people think of that. The last thing I want is for people to get tired of these two. I'm also curious if people want to know what these animations mean- including the Lil Ghost ones. I've purposely never said their meaning before because I think there's value in picking up on things and attributing your own meaning to them but maybe there's another side to it. Also VERY curious as to what people think of THAT!

Powerlines
-
Since posting about countries I haven't been to and wanting to travel, I started talking to a few people from different regions of the word (shout out to PEOPLE from REGIONS!). I also thought that for all the flack social media gets, its been really cool talking to so many of you about art and learning more about the cities where you live. I have a bunch more places I'd like to travel now because of it. Growing up on a farm the first thing I learned about outside of the lil bubble of the countryside was that the powerlines connected us to the rest of the world. When I was a kid it meant I could call Blockbuster and ask if they had James Pond 2: Operation Robocod (underrated game) but you could also talk on IRC and find a bunch of creeps asking ASL? Anyway- I'm happy to learn about all your L's from the ASL bit and cant wait to see y'all at some point. Off to play some James Pond 2.
-
I've been chatting with Yiming Wu who created LANPR version of Blender which has now become the Lineart modifier. The new upgrades coming to this modifier are so great besides what it's already capable of now it's such an absolute treasure of a tool. Now the REAL tool here is me for taking so long to use this over freestyle.

See the World
-
I've been pretty cooped up here and I keep thinking about leaving for a little bit and seeing some places I haven't seen before. Then ideally I'd like to move to a new place. NO IDEA on what places any of these places would be but I've got a couple ideas. I've always had an aversion to going to new places because I have a weird rare food allergy that originally I got laughed at for being picky then it sent me to the hospital. Now people are pretty chill about the whole thing. Also I carry around epi pens in a bum bag like a real poindexter- so that will be fun to explain to all the people that don't want to be my friend in these new countries!
-
To everyone asking what I use to make these- I use Blender and sometimes do compositing in After Effects but also use Blender for that as well. Depends on how much of a setup I need to do and how lazy I'm feeling. Because I'm OFTEN feeling lazy.

Josephine's/First Snow
-
When I was in high school a friend of mine made me a shirt that said "I Eat Vegan(s)" (harr harr) which I loved at the time (this is over 15 years ago- my sense of humour has only deteriorated since). I wore it to hang out with them and we went to the CN tower to check out some GNARLY VIEWS. There was a security checkpoint when you get there that had this body scanner thing that shot a blast of air at you. NO IDEA what that was all about but everyone was going through without issue. My friend goes through- zero problems. I go through- the security guy stops me on the other side- the arm across the chest move that says something didn't clear the body blower machine. He looks at me and says "how'd it taste?" like a joke. A joke I completely missed because I forgot I was wearing the dumb shirt and thought he was talking about the wind scan. "I dont know- I didnt really get a good taste?" then he rolled his eyes and let me through. I asked my friend is they got asked how the wind machine tasted and I'm pretty sure they called me an idiot. Anyway- then I saw some GNARLY VIEWS in my DUMB SHIRT.

Ghost Town
-
I got hooked on watching a YouTube channel about this mining ghost town that had all these secret mines spread out for miles around it that other people would make to try and elbow in on the sweet mine action. The guy living in this town goes out and tries to find these little mines every once and a while and it's my favourite thing. Maybe it's just the adventure/exploration of it all? The idea of finding a bunch of manmade stuff out in the middle of nowhere is SO interesting to me. Maybe its the mystery of what the story is behind it. ANYWAY I made a little animation about it because why not and it KIND OF sticks to the whole ghost theme I've had going while transitioning out of it- UNTIL (some time in) DECEMBER!
-
I get a lot of people asking what I use to make these animations and the answer is Blender. I do compositing in After Effects but also sometimes in Blender as well. I switch it up depending on the animation. I would REALLY like to know if Blender's geo nodes are going to work with force fields ever or if there's a different way to incorporate something like that to a geo node setup. Maybe my question makes more sense by asking if geo nodes will ever replace hair particle sims. Just something I'm curious about!

The Ghost Part 3
-
Lonely ghost turned out to be a lonely ghost for QUITE some time. Wandery ghost turned out to be new to the ghost game. Will there be more of these two? GREAT question. Should there? I tried to cram a lot of story into this one and it felt a little quicker paced than the others and I usually like to let things breathe. Big fan of the breath. So that's a note for me for the next lil ghost(s) ep? I'll write it down. Put it in my shirt pocket. Walk around with it for a day- see how it feels. So are people over lil ghost or are people into seeing more of these two? I've got plans- Just gotta make em. Also I'll be peppering these two into my feed if I do so I won't be a sheet ghost only guy. I think there's already accounts where that's a thing and they do sheet ghosts way better. I do like making them though!
-
Blender 3.0 is in Beta now which is GREAT because I'd LOVE some documentation on some of the new things that haven't really been talked about anywhere (that I can find). ANYWHO thanks for checking out my lil ghost pals and commenting nice things! It means a lot and I really appreciate all the stuff that's been said. You're all REAL COOL!

The Ghost Pt 2
-
I had another idea for a Halloween post but the last lil ghost did so well I made a follow up! I felt bad leaving the lil ghost the way I did the last post so this one is a bit more of a hopeful ending. Kind of like Star Wars trilogy. I guess what I'm saying is I'm basically making Star Wars over here. That's evident right? Star Wars had ghosts. And probably an old Victorian house too. I don't really remember but what I do remember is that Sarlacc pit. That was pretty cool. Anyway- Here's lil ghost and maybe a friend?!
-
I cut this between two projects- one exterior and one interior and boy oh boy is that annoying. It worked out though and didn't render anything I didn't use- outside of experiments anyway. I'm going to work on a few more shaders when I get a chance. I've come up with a few ideas that I wanted to test so I might throw some of those into my stories. Who knows!

The Ghost
-
I made this sheet ghost guy a little while back and did a few shots for fun but decided to flesh it out for Halloween. Didn't expect to end up with such a sad lil ghost scene but I needed to connect the outside shots with the inside- then the ghost looking out had the window grille shadow on his face giving him what looks like a frown and good going Ryan you just bummed out the neighbourhood. Lil ghost just wants to go outside but the wind will blow the sheet all around then theyd be a sheet skeleton and I don't feel like getting into the physics of all that.
-
This is the first project in a while that I didn't cut in Blender itself since I already had a few shots done and wanted to use them. Making music for these has been SO fun. I haven't done any music stuff in a long while so getting back into writing these little things has been so nice.

The Gas Station
-
I needed to work on making new clouds so I spent a bit of time this weekend building these guys and threw them into a desert scene to show them off. I saw a similar place to this when I was in Arizona and for some reason it stuck with me. I always liked abandoned spaces so no surprises there but manmade structures in the middle of nowhere are SO super interesting to me. The combination of both these things- we're talking sweet spot material here. I've had a small obsession with Ghost Town Living for a little while and wanted to make something in reference to that when I figure out what I'd even do.
-
New cloud system I made using a lot of modifiers. Trying to learn fields geonodes again which has been annoying because my groups no longer work. Really thrilled for when all the people who made tutorials have to remake them because a bunch of the nodes changed. Not in like a passive aggressive way either- legitimately thrilled to learn these things again because going through the Blender live streams trying to figure this stuff out has been NOT FUN!

Power's Out
-
I was working on an animation project for a little while ago and wanted to make something based off the word cozy. This was the first thing that came to mind but I went with something else that suited that project a little better. I still wanted to make this one too so here it is! Really trying to get the hang of making cats because if I'm not showing people pictures of them all over here I at least have to draw them, right?
-
Blender- so I have to relearn geonodes?! I guess that's what I get for using the alpha versions but still it's so much quicker. If anyone can tell me why using geometry nodes is so much quicker than using particle systems I would love to hear it. Oh- I wrote the music for this! I'm going to try and write my own music for more of these guys from now on- as much as I have time for anyway.

Last Day of Summer
-
Fall's back! Which means my birthday is back. Which means the evening where I eat an entire pumpkin pie to myself is back. Which means a month of shameful regret for eating an entire pumpkin pie to myself is back- but that part is over halloween so I can finally binge watch both seasons of Creepshow to distract myself form the shame and regret. Also sweaters!
-
I sure would like it if there was an easy way to use force fields with geometry nodes. Still using particle emitters to make my grass dance but using the particle system is a drag now that this fun new modular system is out. I've been looking for tutorials but havent found any- especially since Blender is overhauling a bunch of things in geo nodes still. I did some tricks with the trees in the distance here- not sure if its apparent that I just put a wave texture material on a wall to make it look like tree trunks but I'm happy with it!

The Other Edge of the World
-
Summer's almost over here and I don’t know if it's the leaves starting to turn and that gives off a smell that triggers a bunch of fall memories but there's a definite vibe to it that’s hard to describe. It's hard not to try and grab little bits of the summer that's still here before it's all rain and chilliness. I bought a lot of sweaters over the summer though so I'm real excited to put those to use but not before I lay in the sun for a bit like a greasy cheeseburger under a fast food heat lamp.
-
Trees. The trees I do haven't felt cohesive with my style for a while now and I wanted to try something new. I made these blobby guys as a test to see how I liked them compared to the more detailed ones. I probably need something in between so the search continues. I really liked making the ducks though and I think they're my favourite part of this animation. Thanks ducks!

One of the coolest things about visiting and new city is walking around at 3 or 4 am and seeing it from that perspective. It always felt like getting to a secret area or a place you're not supposed to be in a video game that's away from the action and story telling and just there to see at your own pace. I miss going to new cities and walking around all hours of the day and finding the hidden areas. I DO NOT miss playing video games though because I played WAY too many during the pandemic.
-
Belle Envie made the music and I love it so much. The full clip was closer to 2 minutes but I had to edit it down for this animation and it's the biggest drag because the full thing is so good. Check out his work!
-
I made fake volumetrics in this art style (the lights shining out of the street lights and car lights) and I'm super proud of how they turned out! I'm still debating if I should make the clouds stipple shaded or just leave them as is. I haven't had the time to test it but I'm worried it'd look too distracting and less like trippy wavy fun clouds.

Camp
-
In 2015 I remember how weird I thought it was seeing the city I live in surrounded in smoke and the sun dimming and glowing red like the beginning of a zombie movie. Then the next year it happened again, then the next year and now we just have a dedicated smoke/outrun horror season. There's a company specializing in smoke masks for dogs that I see thrown around from time to time and that seems pretty dystopian, right? Like once people start making products to live with things we clearly shouldn't be living with maybe it's time to actively take steps to fix those things? What do I know- I still use my laptop even though the battery had to be removed and if the cord wiggles just a LITTLE it shuts down. I also can't complain about garbage air and the 80s aesthetics of the weather considering people are actively losing their homes to the fires including an entire village just north of here. Anyway- the world is on fire and this animation is about camping!
-
After my hard lesson with Blender 3.0's new object/mesh info system I've been trying to make everything in 2.93 then animate and render in 3.0 just because of how much faster it is to work with. I've also been trying to be more active in the Blender Stack Exchange so I can learn some better ways of doing the workarounds that I cram into my projects. I made an NPR mirror in blender that uses the lineart modifier on the reflections. Pretty proud of myself for that one. Now I'm working on a way to get the inverted hull method to apply evenly based on camera distance so the linework remains constant. Fun!

Plane Ride

I was on a flight to visit my parents a few years back and I got a middle seat next to my brother who took the window. We I always fought over who got the middle seat because its the worst of the three seats available- we can all agree on that, right? The aisle seat went to some guy with a BIG floppy leather jacket that he had ZERO control of both physically and aesthetically. When the attendant came around with drinks the guy in the aisle seat ordered a full juice, not just the cup. Full juice. As soon as he put his tray down to wait for his litre of juice, his big floppy jacket kept knocking the tray around like an antenna in a car wash. This guys coat had small dog thats just excited to see everyone energy minus all the cuteness of small dog. Sure enough this full juice goes woop! Directly on my lap- none on him. My brother loved it. Laughed. A lot. I did not. The attendant came around with napkins and most importantly another LITRE OF JUICE for this guy and his overactive coat. As soon as I got cleaned up- WOOP- guess who gets two still sticky from juice thumbs and another juice filled lap. 👍This guy👍. This scenario was made 1000x times more frustrating by my brother laughing the kind of laugh where no sound comes out and tears just sort of appear on your face. All this said- I miss travelling.
-
I learned the hard way that Blender 3.0 treats mesh and object info differently than 2.93 and lower. I was trying to rig some characters using the same old addons that I've always been using but kept encountering all these issues. Very thrilled for 3.0 to be out because it's so much faster and has so many cool things going on but seems like most of my rigging work will be done in 2.93.

I've been listening to the song Clay Pigeons by Blaze Foley (and the just as great cover by Michael Cera) on repeat this week. It's about being alright with starting over- which kind of feels appropriate as everything with the world is getting back to where we all were a year and a half ago. I imagine a lot of people are deciding whether they want to go back the plan they were working on before or figure out something new. Get back on the bus or live in this little town. I'm not sure what I want to do- but I bought a new hoodie and it looks pretty good- so lots of changes on the hoodie owning area of my life and that's pretty thrilling!
-
I remade my stipple shader from scratch. I think it looks way better and the sky is now not a dumb sphere with a material that gets in the way when I have to edit things from top view. Nice! I did the gradient in the background with stipple instead of a gradient like I usually do. I've come around on it and I think I prefer it to the smooth gradient! Also nice! A lot of the things that made my shader easier to use were math based and I had a HUGE help from my friend who is an absolute math whiz and every time he explains something to me I feel like Homer in the scene where the witness relocation guys are trying to explain he is now Mr Thompson. I am the Mr Thompson of math. Thanks Curt!

Bath - Music by .d.asquith

I used to live in an apartment with a window in the shower. I've only lived in ONE place where this was a thing and it was awesome. The was never a bad time to take a shower with the window open- middle of the winter? Great. Middle of the summer? Yup! If it was raining it was like you were a part of the party. I moved out of that place and into another apartment I disliked so much I only stayed for 5 months. I still think about shower window and if you can still see a distant downtown core from it while conditioning or if someone build a bigger apartment building near it full of people that can see you bathing.
-
Check out Jon Asquith's music! He's an amazing animator as well- just check him out in general!
-
I did a lot of outdoor spaces and now I'm trying to focus on the indoors. I might have just been compensating for being inside for so long during the pandemic and now I'm going the other way with it all. Working on lighting has been way more fun than setting up a sun light and thats it. I get to play around with more stipple shading and thats all we really want, right? Also I drew a little artwork in there to show off how bad I am at drawing. Just glad I didn't show the cactus drawing on the opposite wall. I would have liked to have the mirror actually reflect what was on the other side of the camera but reflective surfaces just DO NO LOOK GOOD with this style. If anyone can give me advice on making that work better in Eevee then I'd be THRILLED!
