Awu lives in a small village in the Kingdom of Butuan. A boy whose only dream is to lead a life of comfort. Growing up without his parents, he has to work hard at a very young age in order to survive. In the twelve years of his existence, he hasn’t experienced any form of violence in Butuan as the king there is able to maintain peace and order for years and is doing his best to track down all the Yawa within the kingdom. But all this will change when a powerful empire makes a move to extinguish every Yawa who walks the earth. Terror spreads like wildfire across the islands, and the picture of utter destruction looms in the distance. How can a child save the entire archipelago from a vengeance-driven emperor and his atrocious mercenaries?

THE ILLUSTRATOR OF YAWA

Everyone is born with a gift but not all of us are able to hone it. One’s environment plays a vital role in discovering or developing a certain talent or skill. If a child is born to parents who are less fortunate, the probability that he or she might not be able to find out what he or she is good at is high. Social classes really do affect the way people fare in society; the upper class has time and money to get more successful, the middle class also has a big chance at making dreams come true, while the lower class – although not totally deprived of opportunities – struggles in life as if having been born poor is a curse.

Yawa is a Filipino badlit series written by Nuebè Crane and illustrated by Ognira. The story is set in a universe where the Philippines has never been colonized; where places in the archipelago are ruled by emperors and kings; where power and magic are vital in expanding one’s empire or kingdom. It is an era of wonder and terror where people get to witness unbelievable things and experience extreme hostility.

The Yawa are descendants of the ancient Visayan goddess named Nagmalitong Yawa. People fear them as they are believed to consume human souls to increase their power for them to be able to metamorphose into another form. Some Yawa are able to conceal their true identity and are able to live with humans, which make them more dangerous as they could go on a killing spree without being caught. It is believed that they need to consume thousands of souls to achieve the final form of their metamorphosis which comes with incomparable power.

The Emperor of Cebu pledges to avenge his father who was killed by a Yawa. He made a promise to himself to eliminate every one of its kind. This mission is primarily assigned to Harus, an organization commissioned by the emperor himself, whose members possess an incredible power and ability. The organization is divided into three teams which are deployed respectively in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Each team is composed of seven members and is headed by the emperor’s adviser.

To ensure that all Yawa will be eliminated, the emperor aspires to conquer the entire archipelago since some kingdoms, especially the smaller ones, don’t have the capacity to extinguish the demonic race. The emperor is so determined to get rid of all Yawa that he orders anyone who gets in the way shall also be killed. This endeavor will bring chaos to every island, and the loss of thousands of innocent lives becomes inevitable.

Bisayanime X endeavors to promote the works of Filipino writers, animators, and other artists who dream of making a living off of their talents or skills. It is heartbreaking that the world doesn’t have a lot of platforms for individuals whose works have saved us from our loneliest moments and tormenting boredom. With this glaring reality, it is only right to open as many doors as possible for the creative minds that never stop to entertain the insatiable society. It seems that people don’t give them enough recognition for the time and effort they exerted in finishing their respective masterpieces that have kept us sane for a long time.

There are numerous starving artists out there who continue to give their best in their crafts despite the blurry future. But life, at some point, would leave others with no choice but to take a different path. They have to make money to support their loved ones and themselves. Being artistic alone can’t feed their families; they need to have a regular job and forget what they really want to do. Many of them already gave up on their dreams after years of waiting for that one opportunity that never came. Their works would have sprinkled color to our gloomy souls and insipid days had they not quit or had they been given other options.

We live in a world that is constantly in need of entertainment yet doesn’t give so much value to the ones who provide it. Artists need our appreciation and, most importantly, unwavering support for them to be able to create more art that can take us out of inevitable miseries. Our existence would have been insufferable if it weren’t for these imaginative people who offer us various forms of amusement; books, anime, comics, music, and other recreational things are what make life challenges bearable. We should hold these artists in high esteem as we need them more than they need us.

Help us build a community where talents and skills are greatly recognized and given the utmost importance. We can make a person’s dream come true by patronizing his or her creation.
