The Satisfied Sailor without a Story

Atlantic Crossing

Aboard Eva, somewhere in between Azores and Morocco

On night shift again. Writing under a swinging red head lamp as we glide side long over these 15ft waves, steadily rocking like a pendulum. The moon isn’t illuminating the sky like it was last night. It’s still full, but it’s a warm yellow and slightly hazy behind the clouds, so the usual bright white path casted on the water is non-existent and the night is dark. It’s blowing 20-25 knots on a beam, but the boat handles it well… it’s comfortable enough for me anyway. But an eerie night for sure. We reeled in a nice size skipjack tuna today and made sushi from it. Jade and I sang our hearts out to the mama Mia soundtrack while we rolled the sushi in the galley. Not much more to report. But sometimes that’s the best kind of day. ✨

Amsterdam🇳🇱Mykonos🇬🇷London🇬🇧Ibiza🇪🇸Lisbon…picked up a couple stragglers along the wayyyy… Only Kidding! Im actually overjoyed to introduce my friends Zito and Alex. Over the course of two weeks we went from mere acquaintances to the tightest trifecta. I guess that’s what happens when you slum it in hostels with rooms of 32 other strangers and get to run wild thru cities you’ve never seen. No, but really; I don’t think what unfolded over the following two weeks was expected by any of us, but I can confidently say it was some of the best times of my life. The sights and celebrations aside, the ever flowing banter, laughter and camaraderie was undeniably what made this a trip for the books. Super excited to finally get to share, A FEW, of the 48 million moments we lived it up across some of the most well known party capitals of the world 😆🤪

Sometimes I like to look back on how far I’ve come. This particular moment always lives in me. One of the most exhilarating and empowering moments of my life. Closest I’ve been to pure bliss…
A journal entry from October 19th 2021 after owning my boat for just over a year and learning how to sail by trial and error.

The Ocean Breaths Under the Shadows of the Moon

I sailed into the night for the first time. The sunset was a warm orange stripe across the sky. So solid, it could have been painted across. As the light dwindled, the shadows from the moonlight casted on the swell of the water in a way that makes your eyes play tricks on you. The sea state seemed flat. You almost wouldn’t have noticed it, but every 20 seconds or so a subtle rise and fall of the bow indicated the large, yet gradual swells of the water beneath me. I couldn’t quite describe how it looked in words. So I just sat there in awh and thought wow. Then I said aloud “It’s like the ocean is breathing” it was the only way to properly describe the powerful, yet calming movement I was observing.

I sailed along in 15-18 knots at a close haul to beam reach on a starboard tack. I had one reef in the main and half of the jib out. It was a full, bright moon. It lit up the way as I cruised through the night at 7 knots! It was one of the coolest moments of my life. I was alone. I wasn’t scared. I felt in control and exhilarated by the pace of the boat and the atmosphere of the scene before me. I was free. I took a deep breath to feed my need to feel every part of that moment and grinned widely to myself and into the night. I was free.

Jade,
We instantly clicked because of our mutual passion for life and the excitement we have in everything we do (well, lets be honest it was love a first site 😆).. As we are constantly reminded, we are similar in many ways. But today I want to focus on the VERY many ways you are so INDIVIDUALLY SPECIAL. A true empath, you are so in tune with the perceptions of others. I have always admired your capacity to understand and selflessly give to everyone around you. An absolute powerhouse, your drive is relentless. You are unbelievably smart and effortlessly articulate… I’m convinced you have an i7 processor built in (I’ll catch up on the books eventually) You have a knack for creativity, everything you produce is pure beauty. I may be steadfast in my confidence, but you truly excel at everything you do… you’re a monster. Give you a paintbrush, a cello, a mountain (literally), a broken boat, half an idea about never working for someone else again a day in your life… you’ll make something of it. You never fail to amazing me. You are everything great in this world wrapped into a flawless 26 year old women. Very proud to call you my friend. You changed my life the second you stepped into it and I know you’ve done that for many others too. Excited to celebrate many more birthdays together… here’s to 26 🥂… Did someone say Ibiza 😝?!?
