Justin McElroy - CBC

"The numbers don't show evidence that things have grown significantly worse since 2017. So why do so many feel we're at an inflection point?"

The numbers don't show evidence that things have grown significantly worse in a short period of time. So why do so many feel we're at a sudden breaking point?

Dannielle Piper - The Tyee

"By all accounts, there were at least three or more small yet vibrant black communities before Hogan’s Alley, across Metro Vancouver and the Gulf Islands.

But as quickly as these communities were formed, they dispersed. And as quickly as they dispersed, so did detailed historical accounts of their presence and contribution to B.C. and Vancouver."

And will similar communities ever exist again?

"For now, Minten and Levesque-Dupere will have to wait on word from the RCMP to find out what happens next, and Minten is still searching for the magic word so crucial to begin the healing process.."

“There was very likely a small community of Japanese who were living here on the margins of an urban area,” he said. “I think they were living here kind of in secret.”

Brent Richter – North Shore News.

A rusted sawblade. A bit of tin. Neither are remarkable things to find in the second-growth forests around the Seymour River Valley. But beneath the ferns and layers of sediment is another much . . .

1. This page will spotlight stories that make you feel something, whether about the subject, or about the work. The name is probably a misnomer. I (Tyler Olsen) just want to highlight stories that deserve to be highlighted and which make me go: "wow, great story" or "interesting" or "I hadn't thought of that" etc.

2. I don't want to be posting more than one story a day.

2a. Click on the story! If nobody clicks on these stories, I probably won't keep posting.

3. I'll post stuff I find myself, but I don't listen to too much audio journalism or watch too much TV stuff.

4. If you know of something worth posting, tweet at me () or email bcsbestjournalism =at= gmail =dot= com. IMPORTANT: Do not send me your own stuff. I will not post it as a rule, because I don't want to end up feeling obliged in some way.

5. I'm grading on a scale. I'll be less likely to post something that appears on the front page of a daily than a story, from, say, Williams Lake or a reporter you have never read before. Also, I'm not going to use this to self-promote my stuff. Overly. I'll limit myself to posting two of my own stories per year, if this goes that long.

6. I have kids. I'm busy. Things won't appear for days on end. I may schedule some posts, so a story that goes up on a site on a Monday might end up on this page a week later. Who knows!

7. Commenting: If dealing with comments (or anything else about this page – but, let's face it, comments are the danger area) becomes a hassle, I'll abandon it to the Facebook waste bin.

8. The page is aimed at other journalists but It's not exclusively for them. It will start as a public page. If things go down hill in some way, it may get privatized in some way or another, but it's going to start public with all the good and bad that comes with that.
