Residents of Ologede, Mowodani, Idase, Ajelanwa and Imeko in the Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State have lamented rising incidents of kidnapping in their communities.

PUNCH Metro gathered that there were four reports of kidnapping in Mowodani in September, while residents foiled an attempted kidnap in the same month.

The residents told our correspondent that the gunmen often attacked the communities during twilight and in the early hours of the morning, making it difficult for people to go about their daily business.

Our correspondent learnt that members of the communities usually contributed to pay the ransom demanded by the hoodlums.

A farmer, Thomas Oluwasise, said he escaped from four kidnappers who blocked his way from his farm in Mowodani.

He said, “I was on my way home around 7pm when four men suddenly emerged from the bush, armed with pump-action rifles. They blocked the road with fallen tree trunks. The people who tried to kidnap me were Fulanis because I saw them clearly.”

The farmer said he entered the bush and rode as fast as he could to escape from the gunmen, as they shot into the air.

A member of Ologede community, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he had been told he was the next to be kidnapped.

He said, “Recently, we contributed the ransom for two members of the community, Toyin and Labule. The man who took the ransom to the kidnappers in the appointed place was severely beaten and tortured before they released them. One of them told me the kidnappers were looking for me.”

Another resident, Jonah Akinremi, said he evaded the kidnappers at Ologede on his way to Mowodani the previous week.

A leader of the Fulani community in Imeko-Afon, Fulani Amodu, appealed to the state government to beef up security in the communities.

The Baale of Shanka community in Imeko-Afon, Adegbola Olukunle said he had lodged complaints with the police and the Onimeko, Oba Benjamin Olanite.

A security expert, Lt. Col. Folusho Saka (retd) said kidnapping had become a billion-dollar industry in the country, adding that the government and civil societies must be proactive in the fight against the menace.

The Ogun State Amotekun Corps Commander, David Akinremi, told our correspondent that the corps was collaborating with the police to rid the communities of crime.

He noted that his men were also trailing the suspects.

The state police spokesperson, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the anti-kidnapping unit of the police at Eleweran, Abeokuta, was working to arrest the hoodlums.

“Some of the arrested kidnappers are already facing trial. We implore communities in the state to be vigilant and report any suspicious movement of strange faces to us,” he added

A two months old baby for God's sake 😭😭😭😭😭
The National Human Right Commission (NHRC) and the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Imo State chapter have called on the Imo State Government and the Nigeria Police Force to immediately arrest and prosecute one Mr Confidence Amatobi, for allegedly assaulting his 2-month-old baby, Miracle.

Mr Amatobi was said to have assaulted little Miracle with a plastic hanger and broke the baby's arm for disturbing his sleep.

The incident led to the amputation of the fractured arm at the Pediatrics ward of the Federal Medical Centre, FMC Owerri.

NAWOJ, NHRC and the aggrieved mother of baby Miracle, made the call for justice in Owerri the Imo State Capital.

Imo State Chairperson of NAWOJ, Dr Dorothy Nnaji who spoke to newsmen after visiting the amputated boy at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owerri, confirmed that the injury inflicted by the 31-year-old father, a native of Amurie in Isu LGA of the state, led to the amputation of the little boy’s right hand.

Mrs Nnaji who frowned at the dastardly cruel act of Mr Amatobi expressed shock that a father could assault his innocent child simply because he was crying and disturbing his sleep.

She disclosed that Mr Amatobi was reported to have repeatedly hit the baby with a plastic hanger to stop him from crying until the right hand broke.

"The perpetrator, Mr. Confidence Amatobi, who hails from Amurie in Isu L.G.A used a plastic hanger on the baby, simply because he was crying that the mother left to ease herself. He used wood and elastic bands to tie the baby's hand when he saw that hand was broken and swollen," Mrs Nnaji said.

"He locked the mother and baby to prevent her from talking to neighbours or seeking help. He also took her phone from her. After two days she found her way out and sought help from her neighbours. The guy was arrested by a vigilante but he escaped. By the time help came, the baby's hand was already decayed. The only option was to cut off baby Miracle's right hand from shoulder,"

"I feel for the 20 year old Favor Chikwe who is too young to go through all this stress just because she went to easy herself. I am calling on lmo State Judiciary and all spirited individuals and Government to give justice to this innocent boy whose only crime was that he cried like any other baby." she added.

Similarly, the Imo State Coordinator NHRC, Mrs Ukachi Ukah, while reacting to the incident also condemned the brutality and insisted that justice must be allowed to take its course.

Narrating her ordeal, the mother of Miracle, Mrs Favour Chikwe, 20, who hails from Idemili Community, Anambra State disclosed that she had left Miracle with his father on Friday, October 7, 2022, to use the convenience, when the incident happened.

Favour recalled that she overheard her baby crying uncontrollably and had to rush back to know the cause of her cry only for her to discover that his right hand was swollen and bone broken from the beating he received from his father.

Amatobi, it was learnt, confessed that the baby was disturbing him with his cry while he was sleeping and he had to try to stop him by battering him.

"Upon noticing that he has broken the baby’s hand, he used sticks and rubber bands to bind the broken bones together," she said.

"When l confronted him about what he did, he locked us in the room, to prevent me from telling people about his wicked deed or seek for help. He also collected my phone from me so that I will not call the neighbours."

She narrated how she managed to take the baby to hospitals in the community that refused to treat the baby before she took him to FMC Owerri where the amputation was done.

WHAT IS THIS WORLD TURNING TO !!!!!!

An ex-convict, Mercy Orija, has reportedly r***d a 12-year-old pupil, Janet Fakeye, to death in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The suspect reportedly went into hiding shortly after he committed the offence at Fehintoluwa Community Development Association in Idiya, Abeokuta-North Local Government Area of the state.

Our correspondent gathered that Orija, who was convicted for assaulting a Point-of-Sale operator in the community last year, allegedly r***d the minor shortly after he was released from prison.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the deceased was a Junior Secondary School pupil at the Army Day Secondary School, Alamala, Abeokuta.

Janet was reportedly dragged into a house by the suspect while she was going back home from where she went to buy soap to wash her school uniform on Wednesday.

The suspect was said to have used his family house in the same community to commit the crime.

Orija allegedly dumped her body in another building beside his family house and fled the scene.

When our correspondent visited the community on Sunday, it was observed that the suspect’s family house had been destroyed.

Upon enquiry, it was learnt that community youths stormed the house and set it ablaze.

The deceased’s father Sanjo, demanded justice for his daughter.

He said, “When Janet arrived from school on Wednesday, she was writing her homework and after she was done, she told me that she wanted to buy detergent in our neighbour’s house to wash her socks.

“I gave her money to buy the detergent. I was sitting outside and after a while, I didn’t see her return from the place she went to buy the detergent. The place where she went to buy the detergent is not far from the house.

“So, I went to check on her. I was told she had been attended to and had left the place; I became agitated.

“I then thought that maybe she went to collect a book from her friend for her homework. I went to the friend’s place and asked for my daughter; she said she had not seen her.

“I later went to report at a police station around 8pm after we had searched and could not find her. As we were heading towards the police station, I received a call from the community that they had found the dead body of my daughter.”

He said his daughter was r***d to death by the suspect after he tied her hands and legs and covered her mouth.

According to him, the soap and the bloodstains were seen in the suspect’s house while he ran away through the back door.

The deceased’s mother, Tayo, said some residents saw the suspect leaving the house.

She said people heard the barking of a dog while he dumped her daughter’s body before he escaped.

“We want the government to help us arrest him. The youth burnt the house because of the incident. The owner of the house, who was the father of the suspect, died just a month ago,” she added.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said his men had begun searching for the suspect.

He said, “It is true that we are looking for him. The suspect is an ex-convict who was just released from prison. He would soon be arrested and made to face justice.”

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has banned the operations of casinos and gaming centres in the state, including BetNaija over alleged "dark deals".

Popular gambling services in Nigeria include Bet9ja, 1960bet, Nairabet, 9jaPredict and BetNigeria.

The notice of the ban is contained in a statement jointly signed by the Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Mr Donatus Onyenji; Chairman, Anambra State Internal Revenue Service, Richard Madiebo and the Commissioner for Homeland Affairs, Chikodi Anara.

According to the statement, the ban is a sequel to a worrisome number of petitions recently received by the government concerning the manipulation of casino machines and non-transparency in payment for winnings.

It said the allegations amounted to serious abuse of global best practices in the industry which the government under the watch of Governor Chukwuma Soludo would not condone.

The statement partly read, “This fraudulent practice will not be allowed to thrive under the watch of Prof Chukwuma Soludo’s administration and therefore must be dealt with immediately.

“Consequently, the Anambra government hereby directs operators of casino games in Hotels, Restaurants and Bars to suspend all Gaming and Casino operations with immediate effect pending the conclusion of investigations.”

Meanwhile, the government has summoned a meeting of all hotel owners and managers in the state on October 21 at the Prof Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre.

The meeting it said would address issues of enumeration and validation of hotel licenses as well as security, warning that it is mandatory.

It said hotel revalidation forms would be distributed at the venue for all categories of hotels and tourism enterprises, adding that any hotel that was not profiled or without Hotel License would be closed down according to Anambra State Tourism and Hospitality Law

26/07/2022

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), will on Tuesday depart Abuja for Monrovia, Liberia to, among other things, deliver an address bordering on West Africa’s security, free and fair elections and respect for rule of law.”

He will also join other African leaders as Liberia marks a Special Independence anniversary, commemorating 175 years of self-rule; making it the oldest independent post-colonial African State.

The Presidency disclosed these in an explainer statement signed late Monday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, titled ‘The significance of President Buhari’s visit to Liberia.’

The Liberia visit comes at least two days after the release of viral video footage showing terrorists—including an escapee from the July 5 Kuje Prison attack whipping the remaining 43 of over 61 passengers kidnapped from a Kaduna-bound train on March 28.

In the video, the terrorists threatened to kidnap the President and the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

But Shehu, who revealed that Buhari is traveling to Liberia, Tuesday, July 26, said, “the trip signifies the importance attached to the security and wellbeing of Liberia and the rest of West Africa.”

The statement read in part, “On this day, Liberia marks a Special Independence anniversary, commemorating 175 years of self-rule, with the country being the oldest independent post-colonial African State

“President Buhari is the Special Guest of Honour at the celebration and will deliver an address. The trip to Liberia comes at a time when political instability and the return of coups-d’état have upended two to three decades of democratic order in the sub-region.

“Liberia, Sierra-Leone along with Nigeria are going into elections in 2023 and President Buhari is expected to emphasize to them the importance of free, fair and credible elections.”

In his address, the President is expected to stress the importance of the respect for rule of law rule throughout the sub-region. Without rule of Law and constitutional rule, there cannot be security, peace and development.

Further justifying the President’s trip, Shehu said “Peace and security of Liberia (and Sierra-Leone) is important to Nigeria given the enormous investments in men, material and resources expended by this country to secure the two states.

“Without the leadership of Nigeria in the context of ECOWAS to secure these two, there would not have been a Liberia on the map in its present configuration today.

“Bilaterally, Nigeria and Liberia may bring to the table issues of cross-border terrorism, bolstering defense and trade ties. The warmth of the relationship and personal chemistry between President Buhari and George Weah of Liberia is no less significant and will play a key role in the events of tomorrow.”

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Monday, decried the nation’s worsening insecurity as bandits and terrorists continue to wreak havoc in parts of the country.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Obi, a former Anambra State Governor, backed calls for the creation of state police.

He said all 36 states should be responsible for the security of their residents within their domain.

“This security situation has become a complete worrisome situation for everybody concerned. I feel the Federal Government should do more,” he said.

“If I have the opportunity, every state will be responsible for their own security. I will make sure that the governors are given the powers to secure their states. Even if we have federal police, they will be responsible and reporting to the governor.

“For me, I have said it repeatedly that if I have the opportunity, we will deal with the situation head on. There are so many things that we want to put in place in order to ensure that we secure the country.”

The LP candidate insisted that state governors should have every security apparatus to protect lives and properties within their domain.

Stating that security is top on his agenda, Obi explained that he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of seeking technic assistance from advanced countries to help fix Nigeria’s security challenges.

As part of his plans, Obi said if elected as President next year, he will pull millions of Nigerians out of poverty.

According to him, empowering the masses is the means of solving the security challenges as people will not indulge in criminal activities.

He also decried the continued strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), asking the government to invest in the nation’s education sector.

While lamenting the prolonged absence of Nigerian tertiary students from the classroom since February 14, Obi criticised the Federal Government for failing to honout the 2009 agreements reached with the striking lecturers.

He also called for the review of Professors, saying it doesn’t make sense for councilors to earn more than university lecturers.

The family of a Bureau De Change operator, Modibo Usman, has been thrown into mourning after he died from shock following an encounter with two officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority in the Surulere area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Modibo, who was hypertensive, was being conveyed by his son, Mustapha, to the Foremost Radiology Consultant Hospital on Ogunlana Drive, Surulere, to obtain a test result for his daughter, Ummu, when he had the encounter with the officers.

Mustapha, while speaking to our correspondent on Sunday, said his father also had an appointment with his doctor at the Living Heart Hospital in the Lekki area of the state on the same day.

He said when the two officers stopped him for allegedly disobeying traffic light, his father pleaded that he was on his way for a medical emergency but the officers ignored him.

Mustapha said, “My father and I kept pleading with them but the officers refused. My father was even crying and telling them that he had a medical emergency but they said that is what people usually say.

“The two officers ordered us to go to the back seat and they sat at the front and started driving us to the Foremost Radiology Consultant Hospital. My father continued crying that he was in an emergency; they then demanded N50,000 to release us.

“But when we got to the hospital, we quickly rushed to get the test result to show them so we could continue our journey to see his doctor at Lekki but the officers and the vehicle were nowhere to be found when we returned.

“Instantly, my dad suffered a shock and collapsed. I quickly alerted the nurses where we picked my sister’s result and they rushed to attend to him and confirmed him dead.

“When I rushed to the LASTMA office to inform the officers that what they did had caused my father’s death, they started saying I could take the vehicle but I left it there and called our relative, Mrs Yosi Yaduma, to inform her about what happened.”

Yaduma said she reported the case at the Area C Command in Surulere, adding that the two officers were arrested and the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba.

Lamenting that the bereaved family had been clamouring for justice, Yaduma said Modibo, who was the breadwinner of his family, was survived by two wives and 11 children.

She said, “The incident happened on Friday. Alhaji Modibo was a Bureau De Change operator who was hypertensive. He told the officers that he was going to a hospital, even if he had broken the rule, in cases of emergency, rules can be broken.

“He even pleaded with them that he wanted to get the results of his daughter suffering from Down Syndrome, and from there, he would be going to the Living Heart Hospital in Lekki to see his doctor but the officers demanded a bribe of N50,000.

“We are in possession of a video of the violation and where Baba agreed that the officers should drop them at the Foremost Diagnostics. After dropping Baba and his son, the officers told him to instruct his son to follow them so he could know where the vehicle was, but Baba said his son did not know anywhere in Lagos.

“He said they would come later. But while they were at the Foremost Diagnostics, maybe Baba had a crisis and he passed on. Thereafter, the case was reported at Area C, from where it was transferred to the SCID, Yaba.”

LASTMA has been in the eye of the storm over alleged extortion of motorists through traffic lights.

A recent investigation by PUNCH Metro showed some men of the agency worked in connivance with the police.

Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo has said that popular pastor, Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere, who is also known as Odumeje, will pay for the cost of demolishing his church.

Soludo, who spoke on Friday night, said there were several notices sent to all house owners, whose houses were marked for demolition, and that they were all served notices, and asked to remove such structures within a timeframe.

Soludo also said that two parishes of the Catholic church were still waiting for demolition.

“It is costing us money. They had several notices to remove such structures, but they refused.

“The demolition started yesterday (Thursday), and so far so good. The demolition went well, except for Pastor Odumeje, who according to the report drove in, in a brazen manner and attempted to take over the equipment.

“Of course, state work must go on, and security had to stop him. This was a man who was in several meetings we had, and also spoke.

“In fact, this is costing us money, and the structures should have been removed before now, but they chose to test the resolve of the government.

“Once we are done with this exercise, we will compile the bills and send to the persons involved, and they must pay.”

Soludo said two Catholic parishes involved in the illegal structures demolition are St. Dominic Catholic church and Our Lady Queen Catholic church.

He stated that the parish priest of Our Lady Queen Catholic Parish was around when the demolition team visited, and even cooperated, and also granted an interview.

He regretted that Pastor Odumeje took laws into his hands and attempted to stop the exercise.

A Lagos State High Court on Thursday, July 7, sentenced a couple, Fortune and Steve Nwankwo, to 16 years imprisonment for the involuntary manslaughter of their 19-year-old maid, Joy Adole, IgbereTV reports.

Both were accused of killing Adole on April 20, 2020, at their residence located at No. 18, Ogundola St., Bariga, Lagos.

They however, denied the allegation, claiming that Adole committed su***de by hanging herself in her bedroom.

Justice Oyindamola Ogala found the couple guilty of conspiracy and manslaughter.

While delivering judgment in suit no ID/13178C/20, Justice Ogala held that the prosecution had proved the charge of manslaughter, conspiracy and attempt to pervert justice and misconduct as regards the death of their maid in their house at Bariga, Lagos State.

The court convicted Stephen of the charges of conspiracy, attempt to pervert justice, misconduct and accessory after the fact of felony.

The judge held that the court was convinced that the testimonies of the prosecution witnesses were not only strong but also corroborated the fact that the housemaid died due to the beating by Fortune (first defendant).

"The first defendant beat the deceased which caused her death as she had not been feeling well prior to the incident.

“The defendants did not inform or call the family of the deceased from 5am when they found out she had died until noon when the second defendant called the sister of the deceased and asked for her full name and other personal information so as to enable them to embalm her in the morgue.

“The second defendant, having found out that the first defendant had killed the deceased due to the beating, assisted her in perverting the course of justice by hanging the body with a rope.

"There were three adults in the house: the defendants and the housemaid. The defendants were the last two adults that got in contact with the housemaid before her death.

"The hanging was staged, the deceased was hanged by a rope and the position the police found her body did not depict su***de as her feet were on the floor,” she said.

Ogala also held that the defendants tampered with evidence when they embalmed the body, which made it difficult for the toxicologist to carry out an autopsy.

The judge, thereafter, sentenced Fortune to 14 years in jail, while Steve bagged two years imprisonment.

No fewer than five persons have been reportedly killed by suspected herdsmen in Ogbede-Mgbuji Eha-Amufu community in the Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The invading herdsmen were also said to have destroyed many houses and sacked 14 farm settlements.

Speaking on the constant killing of indigenes by herdsmen at Eha-Amufu town, a community leader, Chief Jerome Odo, on Wednesday, said residents were living in fear.

He said women in the community were being r***d on their farms, adding that a woman was r***d by seven hoodlums a few days ago in the community.

Odo, who was flanked by some leaders of the community while he addressed the press, disclosed that between Monday and Tuesday, five of their people had been killed, while many were missing.

He said, “Five our people were killed, two on Monday and three on Tuesday, while many others which I can’t give the figure, sustained bullet injuries. Many others are still missing.

“These people are terrorists. Yesterday, soldiers and the police went to Orie Market and carried the corpses of our people.

“It didn’t take 10 minutes after they left that the hoodlums started shooting for several hours in the community. Three corpses were found on the road and the police are going to carry them.”

On the number of houses burnt, Egah said, “In Akpuff Mgbuji old farm settlements, where more than 1000 people were living, all the houses were burnt down. No single soul is living there as we speak.”

He alleged that the police in the area were not doing anything to stop the killing and destruction.

“The only thing the police DPO does is to come and carry corpses after attacks. If you call him during the attack, he won’t come,” he added.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed two deaths.

Ndukwe said, “Police operatives responded to a distress call alleging the murder of two male victims by yet-to-be-identified gunmen and some others said to be missing, at Ogbede-Mgbuji, Eha-Amufu, around 11.45pm on Monday.

“The operatives took the two lifeless bodies to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead by doctors and deposited in a mortuary for autopsies.

“Meanwhile, a manhunt for the assailants has commenced, while there is no report of any burnt house(s).”
