KING TIDE DESTROYS HOME IN KAIRUKU DISTRICT

By Benjamin Kedoga

A home was completely destroyed and several others suffered some structural damages following what locals say is king tide.

The coastal village of Poukama was hit by the unusual high waters before lunch today (Sunday, 25th December 2022).

Poukama villager and Woman leader Marie Mamei confirmed that their village Chief's house was completely destroyed.

"Chief's house all fell in the sea. Everything was in the salt water. Sorry for him," Ms Mamei said.

She also confirmed that there was no human causualty.

"No deaths and no one is injured. Chief's wife was in the house preparing food but when she felt the house moving she quickly run out and she's okay. If only it happened in the night then it would be a different story," she said.

She said the tide came in the morning the and by lunch hour the building fell due to the current..

Her house just few meters away from the Chief's house also suffered some damages.

She said the high tide was also accompanied by strong wind which also blew off one side of the roof of her home.

The king tide has also destroyed the village mangrove nursary which will affect the ongoing mangrove rehabilitation program in the village.

"We've never experience something like this before. As a women leader in mangroves I feel so sorry for what had happened," the woman leader said.

She said their Christmas program was disrupted, but people manage to celebrate in their own homes.

KILEPA CLAMPS DOWN ON SCANNED FORM 11s

Minister for Environment Conservation and Climate Change and member for Lufa, Simo Kilepa has put a temporary stop on any Lufa district account transactions following advice he received of senior public servants attempting to use his scanned signature to withdraw money.

This was done using a scanned Form-11, which is an official guarantee document from the MP with his signature.

He says form 11 document has been used without his knowledge.

“This is fraud in nature and I want this to stop,” Mr. Kilepa said.

Hon. Kilepa met with Eastern Highlands Provincial Police Commander Michael Welly and laid a formal complaint.

“Even if you are out of the country on duty travel, they will have to wait until you get back and sign,” Commander Welly said.

PPC Welly said, if such practice surfaces in in the future a full investigation will be launched.

Mr. Kilepa also met with the BSP Goroka branch advising them of the alleged attempt by his administration using the scanned Form 11.

Acting Branch Manager, Alice Clarence gave the bank’s support, adding that BSP will not tolerate nor allow such transactions to take place.

Aiming laser beams at aircrafts at night is dangerous and has the potential to be fatal for the pilot and passengers.

The act of shining this pocket size lasers into the sky at night may seem like a harmless pass time, however a pilot in PNG says it has the potential to affect the vision of the pilot.

PNG Air pilot, Steven Aristako took to his page to make awareness on this issue.

He called on his friends and the general public to refrain from pointing laser lights at aeroplanes flying into Port Moresby at night.

"I counted a total of 7 lasers being shone at us from different parts of Moresby at 8.30pm tonight (Monday 12/12/22). The light blinds pilots temporarily making it very difficult to see. It is becoming a big problem in Moresby," Aristako said.

He encourage those doing this to stop in order to avoid disaster.

"Let's avoid a disaster from happening - spread the word. Your family could be on that flight," he warned.

LaserPointSafety.com in its website also confirms that distracting or flashblinding a pilot is dangerous.

Lack of economic activities on Goodenough island in Milnebay province has prompted the islanders to work towards establishing a Cooperative Society to help create some business opportunities for locals.
The islanders have missed out on economic development for years.
But this should be a thing of the past with the registration of Madawa’a Cooperative Society.
Chairman of Madawa’a Cooperative Society, Bede Tomokita said they registered their Cooperative on the 4th of October 2022 and preparations are underway to begin operations soon.
Mr Tomokita says they lack any active economic activity to help villagers improve their lifestyle.
“There is no form of business activity, no government service, no telecommunications, no airstrip, no wharfs, no water supply, no electricity , and no road network,” Tomokita said.
But he said they will use the Cooperative Society as a vehicle to drive and encourage business development on the island.
The Cooperative has over 500 members even in its early stages of its establishment.
While Mr Tomokita is happy with registration of their cooperative society they still have other challenges to overcome before they can get their cooperative into full swing.
"With our village people as Board members, it was extremely difficult to obtain NID cards and understand and meet the requirements of BSP,” he said.
According to Mr Tomokita BSP Alotau branch has given assurance that they should have the account opened soon.
Mr Tomokita says it is encouraging to see elites from Goodenough coming forward to offer their Technical Advice in Cocoa industry, Coconut oil, Vanilla and Local vegetables, to Madawa'a Cooperative Society.
"But we will still need financial support now, in the establishment stages,” Tomokita said.
He said Goodenough island has the potential to tap into cocoa, vanilla, virgin coconut oil, coffee, spices fisheries products and tourism.

A well established seaweed market in
Papua New Guinea would spark interest from local farmers to venture into this marine activity.

At least this is an observation by a seaweed farmer from Milnebay province.

William Benjamin who hails from Anagusa Island of Minebay Province has been farming seaweed since 2020.

Over the two year period up to this year he has harvested close to 10 tonnes of seaweed.

" Last year I harvested 3.85 tonnes and took to Alotau and left it with the Provincial Fisheries office and to date Iam still waiting for payment," he said.

This year, William harvested and processed over 5 tonnes of seaweed which he is keeping with him on his farm on Anagusa island.

"The current price is K2.00 per kilogram of seaweed and if I am.able to sell all of my produce I could at least make around K10,000.00," he said.

For now, the amount he projects is a dream unless there is a good market out there.

He said officers from the National Fisheries Authority visited him recently and advised that there is a market in China. However, William and other seaweed farmers in the country will have to work hard to meet a 500 tonne quota in order for them to export.

" Thats for the country but in the meantime I want to be able to sell my seaweed so that I can earn a bit of income to sustain my life. The Government needs to create market opportunities for people so that they can have money in their pocket," William said.

Climate Chanage Advocate,Ursula Rakova is calling on the Government Government to take stock of the climate change funding under the Climate Investment Fund and come out clear on how the US$25m (est. K88 m) was spent, who benefitted the most and the percentage that went to the target areas in the country.

"A full report must be furnished with acquittals for Five (5) provincial Administration's.

She says the affected people needed to know how many contractors were brought in and they also want to see tangible results of the money expanded.

" PNG Government must seriously take into consideration the struggles of our people on Climate change and must be accountable for the funding to support local communities with local solutions instead of suppressing us"

Rakova returned from the recently ended COP27 meeting and while she is optimistic she still thinks that there is more to be done in terms of mitigating the effects of climate change in Papua New Guimea.

Rakova who did 5 presentstions at the recent COP says it was a great exchange of ideas and information.

In one of her presentation she was invited to speak at an event for the Indegenous Peoples Organisation and she says there are opportunities that PNG can adopt.

"Indegenous and local communities have solutions to address or mitigate effects of climate change, however they still need the support of bigger industrialised countries," Rakova said.
