Remembering David McCartney (From previous chair Duane Farrell, on Behalf of The Rainbow Project)

Northern Ireland in 1994 was a very different place than it is today. It was 3 years after Belfast’s first pride, community visibility was nowhere near what it is today, and homophobia was a common experience for many who ventured into the small number of LGBT venues and nights in the city. At that time, the majority of HIV infections were being transmitted s*xually between men, about 69% of infections in fact. In a story that will be familiar to those working in the LGBTQ sector today, absolutely 0% of public funds was targeted to address the evidence on transmission. Our community was trying to get messages out to people about how HIV is transmitted and how people could protect themselves – but more work was needed.

David McCartney was one of small number of men who stepped forward to facilitate a community conversation on the issue. A plan was put in place and a small pot of money secured from the Department of Health to do ‘action research’ within the community. The action was focused on getting evidence-based information and safer s*x resources out to men who used LGBTQIA+ spaces in an effort to build greater awareness, and the research element focused on gathering the views on what the needs of this group of people were. David was actively involved not only in designing the approach but in going out to bars and clubs and handing out safer s*x packs and chatting with anyone who wanted to know more. There was a lot of fear and ignorance around the community about HIV at that time, and often these conversations necessarily involved dealing with prejudice which the volunteers themselves experienced. This was the birth of The Rainbow Project. At the end of 6 months, the results were collected and communicated back to the Department and the work was so impactful that further funding was secured.

David was a loud and passionate voice in the discussions that led to The Rainbow Project being established and over many years since. As a proud Derry man, he also passionately advocated that the LGBTQIA+ world did not stop at the Glenshane Pass, and that work was needed in Derry and right across Northern Ireland to fulfil the organisation’s purpose. Since those early days, David played many different roles in the organisation – outreach volunteer; trustee; chairperson; employee; support worker; Foyle centre manager. It was a life spent pushing to improve the lives of LGBTQIA+ people who were lonely, isolated, frightened; had experienced hate; or who had come into contact with the Police. While The Rainbow Project was always a Northern Ireland wide organisation, it was David who translated that into the opening of the very first office of the organisation in Foyle in the early 2000’s. He went on to play an active role in the Foyle Pride Committee and he was part of a team of people who worked with the Gasyard Feile to build agreement to paint the Free Derry Wall pink for pride in what remains an iconic image.

The news that David passed away this week while shocking, was not surprising - he had been physically unwell for a while. That did not dampen his wicked sense of humour though – I was fortunate enough to get to see him in late June when in Derry, and we laughed remembering old stories, friends and people lost along the way. Every generation stands on the shoulders of those who came before, who pushed in ways that made the path clear for those who came behind them. David was one such person whose legacy will live for years to come in the lives of people he supported, in the inclusiveness in communities that he agitated for, and in the fact that the organisation he was a part of establishing in 1994 continues to make Northern Ireland a better place for the LGBTQIA+ community.
