Starting this year off on with a word on Jews and Monogamy: A Love Story by Golda Gross.

💍 // "King Solomon famously had seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines. Abraham, the founding father of Judaism, had two wives, and Jacob, his grandson, had four. So how did a tribe rooted in polygamy grow into a monogamous religious system?" // 🤍

"...If the world was created in Hebrew (Bereshis Rabba), did all the other early languages exist at the same time with everyone understanding each of them until they were scattered (Megilla of Talmud Yerushalmi)? Or was there only one language, with the rest spontaneously created after the Tower of Bavel incident (Koheles; Rashi)? Alternatively, were the people just geographically scattered with language diverging naturally (Ibn Ezra)?"

🌐 // “Language is a tool - an essential tool that forms the bedrock of communities, nations, and relationships, but a tool nonetheless. As a result, language is whatever we need it to be.” // 🌐

In issue 03 Jordyn explores how "Yiddish has been weaved into the Jewish identities of so many Jews that it can no longer be separated."

Living in rural Vermont, Nelly produces fine Judaica, crafted from the very land they live on, from the finished products right down to the tools that craft them. We love that Hiddur mitzvah - beautifying mitzvot - is a central value of theirs.

Chodesh Tov!

🌒 The mazal of the Jewish people is strongest in Adar and it is also the month of completion. Just like the moon becomes full in Adar, we can tap into our full potential, remove negativity, and improve ourselves as we draw closer to the end of the lunar calendar. 🌑

Next week we will be releasing Issue 03! Make sure to check your inbox this evening for a special preview for subscribers...

📜 // "We speak to make ourselves understood, and since the leap of faith is incomprehensible to anyone who is not making it, it cannot be spoken of." // 📜

In Issue 03 we revisit the stories of our patriarchs starting with Avraham and Akeidas Yitzchack by Joseph Alfon.

🗣 // About the writer //🗣
Joseph is an undergraduate studying Maths and Philosophy at Warwick University. In the past couple of years he has been leaning more towards the philosophical aspects of my degree, and is most interested in questions about the limits of what can be expressed in language and how, if at all, we can transcend these limits. Alfon hopes one day to become an academic to pursue these interests further, and hopefully engage more in philosophy teaching and outreach to encourage others to reflect more upon their lives.

We have enjoyed a week of month of Shvat as this time of year has come around again. Shvat is the month in which we celebrate the birthday of the trees on Tu B'Shvat. 🌲

Take this is your reminder to go for a walk in nature, to listen, look and breath in the outdoors, to show gratitude to the one above for the divine creations that keep our planet and us alive each day. 🙏🏽

Care to share your Shvat with us or something new that you've noticed on a walk? If you have something that you would like to add to our pages please DM us!

Tevet has many somber occasions associated with it.

It is the month in which Esther was taken into Achashverosh’s palace; the month where the Torah was translated into Greek; the month of the infamous siege of Jerusalem which led to the destruction of the Beit HaMikdash.

The very character trait associated with the month is anger. And yet, its name shares a root with “tov” - what’s so good about Tevet? Evidently, everything. But in this month, Hashem challenges us to look for the good.

We start the month with the last days of Channukah, where every house is filled with more light than the rest of the whole year. A message to us that even though we are entering a month of darkness and cold, we have to cling to the light and reveal it at every opportunity we get - no matter how hidden it seems.
