https://islandtalks.fm/podcast/nicosia-uncut-episode-54-july-is-the-month-of-cyprob-1-7-2024/
After a short break, Nicosia Uncut is back with Andromachi Sophocleous and Kemal Baykalli discussing the recent attempts of UN Cyprus Talks envoy Maria Angela Holguin with the Cypriot leaders. There isn’t a lot of hope for a breakthrough for ther resumption of talks but are we going to see any result at all? A confidence building measure maybe? In the meantime, the UN bureaucracts and diplomats involved in the #Cyprus problem are busy putting the last marks on the UN Secretary General’s reports, for good offices and the UNFICYP, to the Security Council. Regional politics, NATO prospects for Cyprus, EU Parliament elections, Andromachi’s experience in active politics with Volt Cyprus Party and local politics.
Figure It – Episode 11 (Energy Series 2): East Med Energy and the Cyprus problem: why it is in the EU’s strategic security interests to get involved (8/2/2024)

In this 11th episode of Figure It and the second in a series of episodes devoted to energy, Sapienta Economics Director Fiona Mullen talks to Ahmet Sözen, a Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) and a veritable ‘ideas factory’ when it comes to new approaches to the Cyprus problem. Prof Sözen is also part of the Eastern Mediterranean Initiative of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) and has recently produced papers with Diplomeds on Eastern Mediterranean energy issues. In this episode we discuss the proposals put forward in these papers, such “engagement without recognition” and why it is in the EU’s broader security interests to get involved in East Med energy issues. You can find the paper containing the Cyprus chapter here https://diplomeds.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Diplomeds.-Conflict-Resolution-in-the-Mediterranean-Energy-as-a-Potential-Game-Changer.pdf and other publications on the www.diplomeds.org website. Nicosia Uncut – Episode 52: Million dollar question: What is Holguin’s endgame? (1/2/2024)
https://islandtalks.fm/podcast/nicosia-uncut-episode-52-million-dollar-question-what-is-holguins-endgame-1-2-2024/
UN Secretary General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar has arrived on the island and started her work by paying a visit to the Cypriot leaders. This new initiative to revive the talks, which collapsed in Crans Montana conference in 2017, is defined as an attempt to find a “common ground” for the formal talks to start.
In this episode of Nicosia Uncut, Andromachi Sophocleous and Kemal Baykalli question the endgame of this new initiative as there is no sign for the sides to shift their diametrically opposed positions. Supported by Turkey, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has been elected to pursue “a two-state solution” and officially rejected to get engaged in any initiative based on a federal model. Greek Cypriot leader Christodoulides who was part of the Greek Cypriot team during the collapse in 2017 and supported by the “rejectionist parties” in his election campaign continues to express his commitment to the federal model as defined in the relevant UN resolutions and reject to discuss anything outside these parameters.
In a parallel move, the Republic of Cyprus government has announced 14 points of “good-will gesture” towards the Turkish Cypriots before the arrival of the new envoy. Nicosia Uncut producers discuss these points with a critical eye.

The year is ending with new developments, so they can’t help but ask if there is light at the end of the tunnel for #Cyprus.

Facing Love in Cyprus – Episode 5: Forgiving yourself 100 times (1/10/2023)
https://islandtalks.fm/podcast/facing-love-in-cyprus-episode-5-forgiving-yourself-100-times-1-10-2023/
Forgiveness can touch upon even the smallest inconveniences, like missing out on doing your laundry as you had promised yourself after days of procrastination. It can also involve the more challenging task of forgiving yourself for accepting abusive behavior from those around you, or even harder still, for recognizing moments when you may have been abusive.
The beauty of forgiveness is that it’s something we should carry with us always.
How could you go about your life without it? How could you wake up each day knowing that you’re holding yourself hostage to your past actions, replaying old words and painful memories in your mind day in and day out?
So, choose to forgive yourself, again and again, as many times needed and at the same time strive to improve.
Extend forgiveness to the self and grant permission to make mistakes as you continue to learn from them.
“I forgive myself, and I’m committed to aligning my intentions with my actions to the best of my ability.”
Love,
Nuné and Jordy

It has been 20 years since the crossings across the division line in Cyprus started. It is clear that the existing crossings are not enough. Andromachi Sophocleous and Kemal Baykalli discuss Cyprus politics in Nicosia Uncut.

Nicosia Uncut – Episode 44: 2023 – the year of elections! (26/1/2023)
In this first episode of 2023, Nicosia Uncut producers Andromachi Sophocleous and Kemal Baykallı analyze the upcoming elections in Cyprus, Turkey and Greece as well as the recent local elections in north. While the positions of presidential candidates in the Republic of Cyprus are more clear now, in the context of Cyprus problem not much are expected until the elections in Turkey which is scheduled to take place on 14 May 2023. Opposition candidates won Nicosia, Famagusta and Kyrenia in north as a demonstration of opposition parties to mobilize votes despite ongoing interventions of Turkey in the Turkish Cypriot politics. Global and regional developments are likely to bring more pressure on sides to find a common ground for the resumption of talks, nonetheless, current positions of the sides are clearly unbridgeable at the moment.
