The Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has ordered the removal of 'dangerous' games such as Player Unknown's Battlegrounds, better known as PUBG, and Garena Free Fire from the country's online platforms following a High Court directive.

On August 16, the HC ordered an immediate removal of all "destructive" or harmful games and mobile applications -- including TikTok, PUBG, Free Fire, Bigo Live and Likee -- from online platforms.

"Pending hearing of the rule, the respondents are hereby directed to ban/block/remove all links/ Internet gateways of PUBG, Free Fire and all other similar online games for a period of 3 (three) months from date," the HC order issued on Sunday reads.

BTRC Vice-Chairman Subrata Roy Maitra on Wednesday told reporters that they started the process after receiving the court order on Tuesday.

"We have already asked the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) to take action to block PUBG and Free Fire [from the country's online space]," he said.

The telecom regulator was also preparing a list of harmful online apps, including TikTok, Bigo Live and Likee, Maitra said.

He said they were currently evaluating and reviewing which apps were to be brought under this list.

Maitra added that they will block the apps they can. "But we may not be able to ban all of them due to technical shortcomings. In that case, we will write to the concerned authorities and consult or outsource the task to those who can."

Eight of the 12 state-run hospitals in Dhaka, which are listed by the health directorate to treat dengue patients, are now turning them away, unable to provide treatment for the mosquito-borne disease.

Each of these hospitals used to have a dengue-dedicated ward, but those were designated for Covid patients, leading to the current predicament.

Being refused by government hospitals, the dengue patients in the capital are now forced to go to the private ones.

In the 24 hours to 8 am on Friday, 211 new patients were diagnosed in Dhaka, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The day before, 208 dengue cases were reported in the city, 63 of whom went to public hospitals for treatment, DGHS data says.

As many as 1,010 people are currently undergoing treatment for dengue across Bangladesh, 972 of whom are in Dhaka, as of Friday morning.

Since January, 4,115 dengue patients have been hospitalized, of whom 3,095 have been discharged upon recovery.

The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has received reports of 10 deaths caused by the viral infection, but none of them have been confirmed yet.

Dhaka is currently the hotspot of this year’s dengue outbreak, reporting more than 90% of the total caseload every day. In this circumstance, the reduced medical facilities have resulted in yet another medical crisis with Covid already wreaking havoc.

It took a lot of effort from the BCB to bring Australia and play a bilateral series during this Covid pandemic. But it was absolutely worth it.

Bangladesh won the third T20I by 10 runs and sealed their first-ever bilateral series against mighty Australia.

Bangladesh are 3-0 up in the 5-match T20I series.

Batting first Bangladesh scored 127/9 from their 20 overs. Nathan Ellis became the first-ever cricketer to bag a hattrick on T20I debut.

Rest of the job was done by the bowlers who did brilliantly to restrict Australia to 117/4.

Australia needed 22 runs to win from the last over but Mahedi defended.

Shoriful bagged a brace but Mustafiz's 4-over spell was absolutely game-changing.

The nationwide Covid-19 vaccination campaign is going to be kicked off from Saturday.

The Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS) announced that the Covid-19 vaccine campaign will continue on 7-9 August in the city corporation areas across the country.

In addition, the Department of Health has given changed instructions that the campaign can be conducted under local management between 8-9 August in remote and hard to reach areas.

Signed by Covid-19 Vaccine Management Taskforce Committee Member Secretary Dr. Shamsul Huq Tuku, the notice issued on Thursday also informed that the vaccine campaign will be conducted on 8 or 9 August in the unions and wards of the Upazilas and municipalities which have regular EPI activities on 7th.

The notice reiterated that the Covid-19 vaccines will only be given out to those who are above the age of 25 excluding pregnant and lactating mothers.

In the Rohingya camps located in Cox's Bazar, vaccines will be given out from 9-12 August under the campaign to the Myanmar citizens aged above 55.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Director General (DG) Prof ABM Khurshid Alam in a press briefing said the campaign will not be held on a large scale due to a shortage of vaccines.

"Due to the shortage of vaccines, it is not possible to campaign on a larger scale. So these activities (inoculation) will be conducted in a somewhat limited capacity," he told the media today.

Bangladesh is set to hold a daylong mass inoculation campaign against Covid-19 nationwide with a goal to vaccinate over 3.2 million people on 7 August.

Barcelona's shock announcement on Thursday that superstar Lionel Messi would be leaving the club is a "bombshell" of global proportions, according to Argentine media.

Less than a month after the six-time Ballon d'Or winner inspired his country to end their 27-year wait for a major international title in a 1-0 Copa America final victory over arch rivals Brazil, Messi's homeland was left stupefied.

"It is the end of a unique and undoubtedly unmatchable legend," wrote sports newspaper Ole.

"One of the most beautiful stories in world football is ending: the day we never imagined has finally arrived," added Ole in a tweet.

Newspaper La Nacion said this "unexpected turn" of events was "a bombshell that has shaken world football."

Television channel TyCSports said the news was "difficult to believe" in a tweet, adding that it was "the end of an era that has forever marked the history of football."

The local press, though, took an instant interest in where Messi, 34, will really end up next.

Social media was also awash with memes, including several featuring Messi's Argentine countryman Sergio Aguero, who last month joined Barcelona on a free transfer from Manchester City saying he was looking forward to playing with his friend.

Bangladesh is witnessing more than two hundred deaths every day for 10 consecutive days. Such a picture had never been seen before in the 18 months of infection.

Now Bangladesh is one of the countries in the world where deaths are increasing in Corona. According to the World Health Organization, Bangladesh is now ranked 12th in the list of countries with the highest number of deaths in the last one week (as of August 2). The highest number of deaths was in Indonesia, followed by Brazil, Russia and India. Another neighbor of Bangladesh, Myanmar, ranks sixth. And Bangladesh is 29th in terms of total deaths. The United States came first, Brazil second and India third.

According to the criteria set by the World Health Organization, the situation is under control if the patient identification rate in a country is below 5 percent for more than two consecutive weeks. Public health experts say there are no signs that the situation will be brought under control soon. Rather, there is a fear that the situation will get worse.

02/08/2021

The month of July was an extremely difficult one for Bangladesh as it registered over 6,000 deaths due to Covid-19 -- the most deaths ever recorded over a month-long period in the country.

However, as we struggle to curb the latest wave of the coronavirus, the familiar threat of dengue has also gotten progressively worse -- from July 1 till July 30, more than 2090 people were diagnosed with dengue, jumping 668% in cases from June, which saw a mere 272 by comparison.

What has proved to add to the difficulty is the fact that, due to overlapping symptoms between dengue and Covid-19, people are often unaware that they have contracted dengue, believing it to be Covid-19 instead.

While it may be tempting to treat dengue as a secondary problem right now, the fact remains that, no matter the disease, when people are affected, the health care system will inevitably be overwhelmed by the sheer number of incoming patients.

This reduces the chances for those seeking immediate medical attention to receive the services they desperately need, and, ultimately, puts immense pressure not only on our medical staff and hospitals, but also on the entire economy. No matter the disease, when people are affected, the health care system will inevitably be overwhelmed

Similar to Covid-19, dengue too can lead to the loss of life. With this in mind, while curbing the spread of Covid-19 deserves the utmost priority, we must simultaneously continue our efforts to control dengue and ensure that an already challenging situation does not turn into a full blown catastrophe.

The government will accept two more documents -- birth certificate and passport -- of the people alongside the National Identity (NID) card for Covid-19 vaccination registration, health officials said.

Health Minister Zahid Maleque will announce details on this on August 6, a day before the launch of the inoculation campaign at the union level.

This will ease the registration of those who have not been able to take vaccines yet as the NID card has so far been used as the only identification document for vaccination registration.

On Tuesday, the government had decided that anyone eligible for Covid vaccine will get the shot after producing his/her NID card at the vaccination centres.

DGHS Director General Prof ABM Khurshid Alam said, "We are thinking of alternatives to the NID card to give vaccines. The alternatives may be the birth certificate or passport. Our team is preparing a draft in this regard. The health minister will announce everything on August 6."

The government in phases has lowered the vaccination cut-off age to 25 for all citizens. However, the age limit for the family members of the Covid-19 frontliners is 18.

Currently, the vaccination programme is being run through 1,005 points across the country.

Meanwhile, health officials said those who have registered but have not received confirmation SMS will receive it in phases.

"After completing the registration, many people are waiting in the queue in each vaccination centre. Besides, we are administering vaccines to the migrant workers and others in emergency need on a priority basis. This is the reason for the delay. Everyone will get vaccine jabs gradually," a health official said wishing not to be named.
