2 killed, others kidnapped in Lokoja, Kogi State

Two persons have been killed and many others kidnapped by unknown gunmen in Kogi State.

DAILY POST reliably gathered that one of the deceased victims identified as Nicholas Ofodile owns a supermarket in Lokoja.

Ofodile met his untimely death during a gun duel between the armed bandit and men of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, who attempted to rescue him.

The incident according to DAILY POST sources occurred along Gegu/Koton Karfe in Kogi Local Government of the state on Wednesday between 12noon to 1pm.

The source hinted that the suspected armed bandits were operating freely but were later intercepted by SARS.

They, however, succeeded in whisking away many passengers plying the ever-busy Abuja/Lokoja road to unknown destinations.

The incident is coming barely one week after eight policemen were killed in Isanlu robbery attack.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP William Aya confirmed the incident to DAILY POST saying,” I just got a call that the owner of Chucks Supermarket has been killed alongside one other person. The command is yet to get details of what happened”.

• Governor accuses traditional ruler of imperialism over claim to Lokoja, Ajaokuta

• Says ‘no one should test my will’

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State on Friday alleged imperialism in his first reaction to a court ruling ceding Ajaokuta, Lokoja and Koton-Karfe to Igalaland.

A Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja last week gave judgment in favour of Attah Igala, Michael Ameh Oboni 11, in a suit claiming lordship of the three areas.

The court said lands in the three LGAs belong to the Igala on the strength of the 1841 ‘business relationship’ between the colonial masters and the then Attah.

It awarded a N10 billion cost in favour of the plaintiff.

The court ruling has sparked tension across the state with the people of the three areas declaring that they are not Igala.

Residents fear that the situation may degenerate into an inter-ethnic conflict.

Governor Yahaya Bello in a radio broadcast said the Attah’s suit “amounts to imperialism” and such a case has no basis in the modern world.

He urged the people of the affected communities to remain calm and appeal the high court ruling.

He said: “During the week, I heard about a court pronouncement instituted by one traditional ruler that Lokoja, Ajaokuta and Koton-Karfe belong to the Igala Kingdom.

“I urge all the people in those communities to remain calm over the court pronouncement.

“The people should seek legal redress about the judgment.

“But, let me state categorically that my administration abhors ethnic segregation, tribalism and sectionalism. Imperialism has no place in the modern world.

“We have created a state that will give equal opportunity to every citizen of the state. Any act of imperialism will meet stiff opposition from us and will be resisted vehemently.

“Any proclamation or court case that does not foster unity and cohesion in the state will not be tolerated. Any idea of division will not be taken. We cannot afford to divide ourselves in Kogi State.

“We are all witness to the killing of George Floyd in America by a white police officer and how the whole world is responding to it.

“Anybody, no matter how highly placed you may be, or lowly you placed yourself, that will fan the ember of disunity, will be dealt with.

“Nobody should test my will.”

Ajaokuta, Lokoja and Koton-Karfe fall outside of the Kogi East Senatorial District which is wholly Igala.

Ajaokuta is predominantly populated by the Ebira while Lokoja and Koton-Karfe are inhabited by diverse ethnic groups including the Oworo, Ebira Koto, Budon, Nupe, Kakanda and the Bassa.

Governor Bello is Ebirra.

NYSC meets NCDC on strategies for post-lockdown operations

As efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the National Youth Service Corps is strategizing for safe and efficient conduct of its operations ahead of further lifting of restrictions on socio-economic activities in the country.

The Director-General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim stated this during a courtesy visit to his counterpart of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, in Abuja.

He informed the NCDC Chief Executive that NYSC suspended the 2020 Batch ‘A’ Stream One Orientation Course just one week into the exercise as a proactive measure to avert the spread of COVID-19 to any of the Orientation Camps.

Ibrahim said other operations of the Scheme were scaled down in line with the Federal Government’s restrictions order, adding that the Passing-out of the 2019 Batch ‘B’ Stream One Corps members was low-keyed with full adherence to the COVID-19 prevention protocols.

He said conscious of the possibility of further or complete lifting of lockdown, the strategies mapped out by the NYSC Management had taken care of various scenarios, and would be presented to the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 through the NCDC for guidance.

The Director-General said the suspended 2020 Batch ‘A’ Stream One Orientation Course would be completed, when the Scheme received the green light from the PTF.

He also briefed his host on the various COVID-19 interventions made by NYSC, especially through Corps members’ activities all over the country, including sensitization; production and distribution of face masks, liquid soaps, hand sanitizers, automated disinfection chambers; as well as automated and foot-operated liquid soap, hand sanitizer and water dispenser.

Ibrahim solicited the PTF’s support in the funding of mass production of the automated disinfection chambers for use in all the NYSC Orientation Camps.
He commended the NCDC for its role in the overall national efforts at containing the COVID-19.

In his response, the NCDC Director-General, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, commended NYSC for its support to the fight against the coronavirus through Corps member’s activities. He particularly expressed delight at the fabrication of hand washing machines and production of disinfectants amongst other interventions.

Ihekweazu, who praised the contributions of the Scheme to the unity and development of the country, stressed that it deserved every form of support to enable it succeed.

He said the proposals presented by the Director-General would be studied and recommendations made to the appropriate authorities.

Pandemonium as policeman gets electrocuted on tree

Tragedy struck in the Garki area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja on Sunday when a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Lasaka Habila, was electrocuted while cutting leaves from a tree in the city Centre.

The Nation learnt that the unfortunate accident took place opposite the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Garki, Abuja.

A cutlass was seen lying around the tree at the scene of the tragedy. The cutlass was believed to have been used by the victim to cut down branches seen littered around the scene of the accident.

The victim was later taken to the National Hospital, Abuja by the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) search and rescue team where he was confirmed dead.

Eyewitnesses said the victim might have been electrocuted by a high voltage from the high tension wire close to the tree.

The victim, who was seen stuck on the tree, was eventually brought down by the Search and Rescue team of the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Saddened by the tragedy, the Director-General, FEMA, Alhaji Idriss Abbas, advised FCT residents to always seek approval from the FCT Parks and Recreation Department before cutting down any tree in the FCT and not take laws into their hands.

The FEMA boss also noted that in this period of rainy season, most trees would bloom and come in contact with electricity cables which may transmit high currents through the leaves and branches.

Abbas, therefore, warned Abuja residents to avoid coming in contact with trees planted close to high tension cables and other electrical instillations to avoid being electrocuted, as one may not know whether the tree is carrying a live electrical current which could be harmful to the individual.

I won’t resign, says Kogi commissioner accused of r**e

The Kogi State Commissioner for Water resources, Abdumumini Danga has vowed not to resign from office in spite of the ongoing investigation into the allegations of battery and r**e levied against him by Elizabeth Oyeniyi.

“Step down as how?” Danga retorted in a response to our correspondent’s question on whether he was considering resignation to enable the police to carry out proper investigation.

Danga was in the eye of the storm after Oyeniyi called him out on social media, asking him to extend palliatives to his immediate family.

Oyeniyi said the commissioner consequently sent some hoodlums after her and allegedly r**ed her at a hotel where she was whisked to.

Danga was invited last Tuesday for questioning by the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, but was released on bail and asked to report back at a later date for further questioning.

When pressed further on whether his resignation would allow the police carry out investigations without bias, he declined further comments.

However, the state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, said Doga’s being in office would have no impact on the integrity of the investigations.

“His being in office will have no impact on the integrity of the investigations. We trust the police to do a thorough job. But you will agree with me that it will be unfair to punish anyone who has not been found guilty,” Fanwo stated.

It was while the stylist was busy preparing the attachment that the woman left while her husband took away the child, telling neighbours that she was taking the child to Shoprite to shop for him.
“On realising that both husband and wife were nowhere to be found, my wife raised the alarm. On opening the bag, they discovered that it contained only serviettes.
“The matter was reported to Central Police Station, Umuahia.

“Now, it is like my wife is developing mental issues. She has not eaten since then and would say that her son is crying and needs her.”

Strange couple steals 10-month-old baby in Umuahia, disappears
The family of Mr. and Mrs Harrison Nwachukwu has been thrown into mourning, following the stealing of their 10-month old baby boy by a strange couple on Friday in Umuahia, Abia State.

The shock has left the nursing mother acting strangely.
Narrating how the child was stolen in is mother’s hair salon to Vanguard, Mr. Harrison a staff of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, appealed to those who took the little boy to return him to the family.
He explained that while at his duty post on Friday, he got an urgent call to come home. And on getting to the hairdressing salon at Ekwuruke Street by Okigwe Road, he was told how a man and lady deceived his wife, Charity, and stole the child.
Mr. Harrison’s words: “Three weeks ago, this couple came to the saloon and the lady told my wife that she was looking for a good salon to make her hair.
“She said that they moved into the neighbourhood a few weeks ago from Port Harcourt and had been searching for a good salon to make her hair.
“My wife welcomed them, thinking that they were genuine, not knowing that they had another thing in mind.
“From that day, the ‘couple’ started visiting the saloon on a regular basis and were admiring my children, especially the 10 months old Emmanuel.
“The lady told my wife that they have been married for two years without a child and have been praying for a child like my son.
“They come around every day to greet my wife, thereby creating a kind of familiarity.

“On Friday, the couple came to inform my wife that the wife would be making her hair on Saturday, but my wife told them that since Saturday was clean-up day, they should come in the afternoon.
“They returned later on Friday with the excuse that they would not be chanced on Saturday afternoon. The man even bought roasted yam and ate it while my wife was preparing the attachment to make the wife’s hair.
“While my wife was working on the attachment the lady gave my wife a padlocked bag and told her not to let her husband get hold of the bag because it contained money, which she didn’t want her husband to see.

-19: PTF Lifts Ban On Religious Gatherings Based On Guidelines

The federal government has lifted the ban on religious gathering across the country.

The government had imposed the ban two months ago to check the spread of coronavirus.

But at the briefing of the presidential task force (PTF) on COVID-19 on Monday, Boss Mustapha, secretary to the government of the federation and chairman of the PTF, announced that President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the relaxation of the ban for four weeks.

“The PTF submitted its recommendations and the PRESIDENT has approved the following for implementation over the next four weeks spanning 2nd – 29th June, 2020, subject to review-:

“Cautious advance into the Second Phase of the national response to COVID-19; application of science and data to guide the targeting of areas of on-going high transmission of COVID-19 in the country;

“Mobilisation of all resources at State and Local Government levels to create public awareness on COVID-19 and improve compliance with non-pharmaceutical interventions within communities; sustenance of key non-pharmaceutical interventions that would apply nationwide and include: ban of gatherings of more than 20 people outside of a workplace;

“Relaxation of restriction on places of Worship based on guidelines issued by the PTF and protocols agreed by state governments.”

NMA president: Many Nigerians will suffer if governors take over COVID-19 response

Innocent Ujah, president of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), has asked President Muhammadu Buhari not to allow states take full control of managing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Boss Mustapha, secretary to the government of the federation (SGF) and chairman of the presidential task force (PTF) on COVID-19, said on Sunday in the next phase of the lockdown beginning from Monday, states will take responsibility for managing COVID-19 in their areas.

“I can assure you of one thing: the ownership of the next phase will be the responsibility of the states under national supervision and coordination, because we have gone into community transmission. Where are the communities? The communities are in the states,” the SGF said.

Speaking on COVID-19 Watch, a programme on AIT, the NMA president kicked against the decision, saying if governors are allowed to manage cases, many Nigerians would suffer for it.

“The president should not devolve those powers to the state governments because, apart from Lagos and maybe one or two other states, the commitment is, to say the least, very disappointing. I can say that because I’m a clinician myself,” he said.

“I believe that the president should please not devolve those powers. This is an emergency. Coordination is very important and the coordination should be central, should be from a point, because once you do that, Nigerians will be finished. And we pray that he doesn’t do that.

“There is nothing like local government in Nigeria; I’m sorry. It’s there in the constitution but there is nothing. So, please let’s not do that.

“This is not a political issue; this is a health issue. It cuts across everybody. We know where the commitments are and we will need the president to please prevail on the governors. If we leave it to the governors, our people will suffer; they will die and it doesn’t really matter to many of them.”

As of May 31, a total of 10,162 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in 35 states and the federal capital territory (FCT).

FG lost N800bn paying ASUU before IPPIS, says Ngige

Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment, says the federal government lost N800 billion to the old system in which university lecturers were being paid — before the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) was introduced.

Ngige, who spoke with Journalists at his Alor home in Idemili South local government area of Anambra state on Sunday, averred that there would be no going back in paying lecturers with the IPPIS.

According to him, the introduction of the IPPIS has brought an end to the various irregularities that characterised the old system in which university lecturers were being paid.

The minister alleged that the reaction of the Academic Staff of Union of Universities (ASUU) to the use of IPPIS was largely due to the attendant changes the initiative brought in the payment process.

“What ASUU is saying is laughable. Your employers will dictate how they will pay you. They can decide to pay you with a cheque which you sign in your regional office every month and you take your salary and go. They can decide to do electronic transfer. You bring your account number and they do a transfer electronically to you,” he said.

“But for some strange reasons, this has become an issue with the Academic Staff Union of Universities. They claimed they were being migrated from the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System platform into the IPPIS.

“The Federal Government pays their salaries and the Federal Government says ‘we are losing a lot of money paying you from the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) platform because the GIFMIS platform only transmits money for your salaries to the university system, bursar’s office and from there they pay you.”

The minister also pointed out that the use of GIFMIS was fraught with several anomalies which include cases of ghost workers and people receiving more than their due.

“They are not and because they are not, the shortfall in the taxes they deducted, the various state governments were those universities are domiciled have petitioned the Joint Tax Board.
