Word of the Episode | 03 Chemo Brain

In this episode, we share some of our long and short term side effects—the ones we can remember anyway.

Chemo brain is one of the more popular side effects that falls under both categories. For short term, it can look like forgetfulness or foggy brain symptoms. For long term, it can look like stress when you can’t remember an important annual calendar date or forgetting lyrics to your favorite song.

If you or a personal connection have had cancer with chemotherapy treatment, how do you experience this side effect? Dish up what you remember (no, seriously) below 🤯

Take Out | 02 Reflections on Cancer Card

In our second episode, we ask ourselves and our listeners to reflect on the experience with their ‘cancer card’ - which is defined in a previous post - and how aware we were around it being part of the cancer diagnosis as well as within our relationships.

Create space for this reflection by exploring how it may have shown up during diagnosis, treatment, or post treatment. If having that conversation in person is no longer accessible, try journaling about it. Or creating art. Or going to your favorite spot that you both used to frequent during that time. Whatever you choose, or try and realize it doesn’t work for you, is okay.
See what comes up.
See what happens.
See what is.

As always, the email and the DM are eagerly awaiting your thoughts. And, while supplies last, reach out to us and we will send you your own card at no extra cost - all we ask is you that you subscribe 🎙 💳 🎗

Race | Celebrate Life Half Marathon

Yesterday we joined hundreds of humans who have either experienced cancer first hand or are close enough to have known someone in their life who has. Unfortunately those numbers are growing. Fortunately, people are continuing to rise up and take action to do something about it.

The race itself was one for the books. Sure it was a little colder than our above average temperatures as of late, and the sun was shining with minimal wind participation. This year we added two more of our connections in on the day that was filled with advocacy, teamwork, and endless conversations.

Would you like to join us next year?
Possibly spend the night before in the town of Rock Hill and get some fresh air before taking on the hilly, peaceful course? Let us know in the comments below or through our DM

Big thanks again to for continuing to bring people together in the spirit of supporting those who have had cancer 🏃🏻‍♀️🎗🏃🏾

Word of the Episode | 02 Cancer Card

Everyone who receives a cancer diagnosis also receives a list of treatment options, potential side effects, and a suggested date to begin it all.

What many don’t know is that you receive a permanent yet invisible tool at your disposal. This is called - a cancer card. There are many types of cards out there and this one is typically not discussed with cancer patients as their main focus tends to be elsewhere. However, it is there and it is okay to play it when & by all means necessary.

And, if you need a physical card, we still have some on hand from our bulk order from — and if you work at a hospital or other health care facility that supports adolescent or young adults who experience cancer, you should consider a large order to bring both light and a physical place holder to your patients. And that’s our food for thought this Friday—send your messages to our DM or comment below if you’ve listened and like to receive your own 💳

Episode Two | Family and Relationship Dynamics

We knew from the very beginning of starting a podcast that this was a topic we were going to cover.
It’s complicated.
It’s dynamic.
It’s filled with failures, and learnings, and compassion.

We open this can of sardines gently and we’re pretty positive this won’t be the last episode exploring this aspect of living with cancer. Listen through the link in bio 👩‍👦🎙👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Take Out | Cancer Diagnosis

To wrap up each episode, we chose to give our listeners a piece of our podcast for them to take out into the real world called, Take Out. It will continue to be along the lines of a call-to-action or a reflection question, or maybe something we haven’t thought of yet.

For Episode 1, we ask our listeners (SPOILER ALERT) to think back to the time of their diagnosis and what that experience was like. These questions are for anyone who listens, whether you yourself experience cancer or whether you’re the caregiver, boss, friend, significant other, health care provider, sibling, or running partner.

Reminder: we would love to hear from you - please feel free to send us an email at cancerontheside@gmail or through DM if you can’t wait another second to connect.

Extra Curricular | Celebrate Life Half Marathon

If you’ve tuned in for an episode, we share on more than one occasion of our shared interest of running. Whether we’re training for a race or hopping in on a fun run, we’ve seen the power of the run community bring people together for a good cause.

Last March, we found a race in upstate New York called the Celebrate Life Half Marathon (). This race is a ‘red tape’ free donation opportunity to give back to the young adult cancer community, with plenty of race distance options for any level of fitness to join in.

To our surprise, we ended up placing first for the overall half marathon team relay—first time for everything 🏆

Let us know below of what opportunities you’re currently exploring to support your physical and mental health as it relates to your cancer experience - whether it’s physical, creative, spiritual, emotional, or completely new to you - we want to know 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏾‍♂️

Word of the Episode | 01 Cancerversary

Every podcast episode includes a word that we want to bring to the table and discuss prior to the discussion. This is to help ensure that for those of you listening have the knowledge on your plate before settling in. It’s also in part to help break down the barriers between those of us who have personally experienced cancer and those of you that have not.

Our first episode shares our defined definitions of the word, Cancerversary. Yes, it sounds like anniversary and that is intentional. This is a date that anyone who has / had cancer identifies as a significant date related to their experience. Tune in to find out ours and feel free to share yours with us below 📅

How Did We Get Here | Our Why

The work of being an advocate changes for those who have experienced cancer. And it looks different for everyone.

When we first began considering what a team and individual component of this could look like we were flooded with ideas. They ranged from athletic to creative, and most recently came to life through blogging for Blood-Cancer.com on their community site.

This summer, the idea began to transform an old art concept into the interactive medium of podcasting. We knew we wanted to hold the space for an AYA conversation where topics ranged on all areas of life experienced with cancer. We know where we hope it will go - to include interviews with people who are connected to cancer. For now, it’s just the two of us—setting the table for the words, thoughts, and ideas that will be shared.

We can’t wait for you to join us, engage with us, and pay it forward.

Episode 1 | Our Story

We don’t want to spoil all the goods from our first episode and we think you ought to know how Vinnie met Sierra.

We both had been showing up to November Project Philadelphia for a couple of months prior and had maybe given a hug or high five in passing. The first morning of actual recognition happened when their mutual friend, we’ll call her ‘Beth’ for now, got the group to acknowledge Sierra’s fifth year of remission by printing out the mantra or mission of the non-profit Stupid Cancer—get busy living. They were pinned to jackets and hats on that cold spring morning in March 2015 and the announcement of why this was happening connected the dots for Vinnie. They ended up beginning to chat about cancer during the workout and breakfast, and the rest of the friendship is history: we encourage you to scroll through some of our fitness memories located in Philadelphia, PA.

Co-Host: The IG Queen, Sierra Missed

This is Sierra - one of your hosts for the podcast, Life With A Side Of Cancer. She will be handling our IG account, so if you want to get ahold of her directly, that will be your best bet.

What you need to know about Sierra are the following three facts:
1. Sierra is the type of person that will listen to you until her ears fall off…or until she needs food.
2. Sierra is curious like a cat and has no problem creating until completion, success or fail, to then begin it all over again.
3. Sierra is the type of gal who naturally runs 5 minutes late, so if she’s on time, take that as a sign of affection.

Honestly, what you can expect from Sierra is to help us uncover our own sense of self worth and self care by sharing her trials & errors over the last ten years — with a little bit of humor served throughout each episode.

Recording Live: On site at REC Philly

When the idea came about in June for us to truly consider creating a podcast, one of the variables was…that neither one of us had in fact started one before. We began asking anyone who would listen or respond on Facebook about what this process looked like. Last March, we had recorded an episode after running a race called, The Celebration of Life Half Marathon, in upstate NY for our friend’s podcast - How Was Your Run Today () ? Vinnie took on the host role, with Sierra as the main interviewee, and needless to say that had sparked serious curiosity into what storytelling could be around the topic of young adult cancer.

So, what do you do when you want to start something that you have no idea how to do? Answer: you surround yourself with people that do. We began doing research and found out about REC (Resources for Every Creator) Philly: a creative coworking space that can support any part of the process of your project. It is spacious, has endless gadgets that are free to use with membership, and hosts plenty of learning opportunities from panels to hands on workshops. Seriously, it’s a real thing.

The next time you’re in Philly, head down to the Fashion District and head up to the second floor to get a tour of the space. Better yet, go ahead and join them for an event to witness the magic in full.

Behind the scenes images are captured on location at REC Philly

Co-Host: The Twitter King, Vinnie Cent

This is Vinnie () - one of your hosts for the podcast, Life With A Side Of Cancer. He will be managing our Twitter handle, so if you want to get ahold of him directly, that will be your best bet.

What you need to know about Vinnie are the following three facts:
1. Vinnie is the type of person who will welcome you with open arms and a big smile.
2. Vinnie is a true thinker and he’s never afraid to take a conversation further down the rabbit hole or beyond where the sidewalk ends.
3. Vinnie is a guy who feels comfortable starting up the dance floor even when there isn’t one for miles.

For real though, what you can expect from Vinnie is to bring his vulnerability to our episodes through his honesty and his commitment to learning how cancer can bring about change in every way, shape, and form from whatever stage of life you are in.
