THIS WEEK IN WEST HEMPSTEAD — DECEMBER 17
West Hempstead saw its first snow of the season early Sunday morning, with about 4 inches of heavy, wet, icy snow making driving difficult and causing some sporadic power outages. The good news: warmer weather and heavy rain later this week should wash it away.
The West Hempstead Community Scholarship Fund is now accepting applications for local high school seniors. The deadline is February 6, 2026. Applications are available through school guidance offices, the public library, or online at: https://whcsfund.wixsite.com/website
On Monday night, the community gathered at Halls Pond for a Menorah Lighting, led by Rabbi Yossi Lieberman of Chabad West Hempstead. Despite the bitter cold—and in the shadow of the tragic attack in Sydney, Australia—residents came together for a powerful and meaningful Chanukah celebration. Special thanks to the Lakeview Fire Department, Nassau County Police, Chabad, and all the volunteers.
Traffic remains a daily frustration, especially in the late afternoon, with residents again reporting gridlock on Poplar Street. Drivers are urged to use caution and alternate routes.
In local sports, West Hempstead defeated Cold Spring Harbor 65–57, led by Alex Davis with 24 points.
Holiday happenings continue: Winter Wonderland is coming to the Secondary School on December 20, the library is stocked with holiday books (and those popular “cones of silence”), and Riesterer’s is in full holiday mode with sufganiyot for Chanukah and stollen for Christmas.
Finally, some store news around town: a new 99-cent store on Hempstead Turnpike has already closed, the former Alegro Bar & Grill will reopen as a Caribbean restaurant, and Bagletown on Hempstead Avenue has been sold to a Queens-based operator.
