CNN anchor Laura Jarrett has some stories to tell about her mother, former senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett. The two have a very close relationship, but Laura says her mom had lots of rules. Still, she was also the one Laura’s friends could call if they got in trouble. And Valerie always made sure to have a birthday dinner with her daughter--even if it meant flying in for just an evening a few days before Barack Obama was elected president.

Valerie Jarrett needs little introduction. She has been a power player in Chicago politics all the way back to the 1980s, then went on to hire a young woman whose name at the time was Michelle Robinson—now Michelle Obama—and a lifetime friendship and relationship with the Obamas was born. She was a senior White House advisor and continues to work with the Obama Foundation. Her daughter, Laura Jarrett, a CNN anchor, talks to Katie about her amazing mother and what it was like to grow up with an incredibly busy single mother.

One time, Bronagh Hanley and her brother accidentally lit their kitchen on fire while trying to make french fries. They were new to the U.S., and figured they needed to eat french fries like Americans do. But their mother, Rita Kelly Mullan, had bigger things cooking. She worked as a nurse, founded the nonprofit The Irish National Caucus, and successfully lobbied the U.S. government to recognize human rights issues in Northern Ireland. Listen to Katie's conversation with Bronagh about her extraordinary mother this week. https://katiehafner.com/our-mothers-ourselves-podcast/

Does this sound like a 'housewife' to you? Rita Kelly Mullan worked as a nurse, founded the nonprofit The Irish National Caucus, successfully lobbied the U.S. government to recognize human rights issues in Northern Ireland, received the Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Human Rights, was named one of the Top 100 Peacemakers by Irish America Magazine, and testified multiple times before Congress. Yet, still, she was described as a ‘Belfast housewife’ in a 1979 New York Times story. Clearly, she was much more than that. This week, Katie speaks with Rita’s daughter, Bronagh Hanley, about her childhood and her mother’s 30 years of work lobbying for recognition of human rights abuses in Northern Ireland. https://katiehafner.com/our-mothers-ourselves-podcast/
