Tales From the Heliosphere The Heliosphere, a fantastical reflection of our solar system, holds dozens of worlds upon which live billions of people.

Every one of those people has stories to tell - these are but a few of them.

True Space Fact: The star designated HD 140283, sometimes called "the Methuselah star," has been determined using current aging models to be between 13.66 and 15.26 billion years old. As the most widely accepted estimate for the age of the universe itself is 13.73 and 13.81 billion years, HD 140283's true age must lie at the lower end of that range, and even then it would have been among the first stars formed after the Big Bang. Though if its age really was closer to the high end or even just the median of the scale, that would imply this star existed long before the universe.

TL;DR - Next full-size episode on indefinite hiatus until at least autumn, more bite-sized pieces of the Heliosphere coming starting this April.

Hello all! Sorry I've been silent for the past several weeks, I was worrying myself into a corner about my progress on the next episode and put off saying anything about it.

Short answer to the question of "when's the next episode releasing," the next full-length Tale From the Heliosphere won't be releasing for a while. Back when the previous episode was in production, I had already decided I wanted to go an a hiatus for a bit while I figure out a few things on production flow (as well as work on some other personal projects), but I'd intended to do this after telling the next tale. Unfortunately, the scale of the story got away from me and I went back to the drawing board, and my intention to release the first part of the next tale in the beginning of March clearly didn't happen. After some deliberation, I decided that at this point it's best if I just go ahead on hiatus right now instead of dragging things out. I don't have an exact timeline for when the story of the Passage to Dione will continue, but right now I'm looking at September or October.

That said, I do want to continue making little bits of stuff during the hiatus - bits not connected to the overarching journey of the travelers from Ganymede to Dione, and not full-sized short stories. More along the lines of little legends and things of that nature, five minute snapshots of the world of the Heliosphere. The first of these "Heliosphere Shorts" will release in April, and will release regularly from there - these will be much smaller productions, telling much shorter and simpler stories, so I'm confident that, unlike what ended up happening so far, I'll be able to craft these in a significantly shorter timeframe (perhaps as quickly as two a month?) while simultaneously giving them more polish and continuing to work on improving my currently rather amateurish production skills.

From there, it's a matter of figuring out what I'm doing with the "main story" going forward. And "going forward" is certainly what I intend on doing - I do have more stories I want to tell in the world, not the least of which being the full story of our travelers' passage to Dione. I kinda jumped into this without knowing what I was doing or where I was going, which has its pros and cons, and I'm definitely feeling the cons right now. Currently, I'm toying with the idea of telling the rest of the story in the same format as these shorts, though that would mean abandoning my initial format and concept for this podcast as "fantasy Canterbury Tales in space."

Whichever direction I decide to go in, though, I hope those of you who have been listening in will still enjoy this little experiment of mine. Thank you all for listening so far, and I hope you continue to do so!

Fun real space fact: the most recent episode of Tales From the Heliosphere references Naiadine as the swiftest member of Neptunia's court - this is because she is the world spirit of the moon Naiad, which has the shortest orbital period (time spent to orbit the planet) of all of Neptune's moons at around 7 hours. The second shortest orbital period among Neptune's moons is Thalassa's (whose world spirit Thalassanna was sent to bear a message to Tel'Gaia in that story), at around 7 and a half hours.

So as some of you may have figured out, my initial desire to release a new episode at the beginning of each month has gotten away from me. That said, you can rest assured that the next episode of Tales From the Heliosphere is well on its way to be released sometime in mid-January. I hope you're all ready for a new tale!

"I am the smallest rat of the smallest, clan, and I stand before the Rat King to take away your might!"

The third episode of Tales From the Heliosphere - The Parable of the Knives Pt 2 - is now up!

In the second half of Rill's tale, the runt Crumb finally reaches the Rat King's palace - but now that the smallest rat of the smallest clan stands before the strongest rat of the strongest clan, how will she go about her task of taking his might?

11/12/2020

"My might is mine, little Runt, and cannot be taken from me. To even attempt to try is the height of folly and arrogance alike."

Status update: episode 3 should release tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon.

05/12/2020

Apologies for the lack of updates lately - the next episode, the conclusion of the Parable of the Knives, was originally slated to come out earlier this week, but I did a poor job scheduling my recording this month (both my own and my collaborating actors) and as such am way behind, and then on top of that I dropped the ball in posting stuff here. Again, apologies!

With that said, the third episode of Tales From the Heliosphere should release sometime next week (aiming for Thursday) - I'll keep y'all posted!

Real Space Fact: Tarwin's homeworld of Ganymede is one of the moons of Jupiter, which like most moons in the solar system, is tidally locked - if you were to live there, while the sun and the stars would move across the sky over the course of days and years, Jupiter would stay immobile in the sky unless you yourself moved to a different part of Ganymede's surface.

Real space fact: in astronomy, the word "heliosphere" refers to the sun's astrosphere, the bubble of plasma (or "solar wind") surrounding the sun, separating a star's stellar space from the galactic "insterstellar medium." The radius of the heliosphere, depending on where you determine the boundary to be, is between 113 and 121 AU (~17 billion to ~18 billion kilometers) at the windward side.
