The Geronimo Hotshots fight the most intense wildland fires in the nation.

When Americans began living in Wyoming and Montana in significant numbers, wildfire became a concern. One of the pioneers of firefighting techniques that our Forest Service Service is beginning to revisit was Hans Kleiber himself. But before him, the First Nations peoples knew forest fire, and learned to embrace its reality. The Apache Nation continues to draw on that wisdom and the legendary courage of the Apache people. An elite group of 20 individuals is sent all over the west to tackle the hardest wildfire-related tasks. Their story is more than incredible. Here's just a part of it, in their own words...

The Sudeten Germans bore the brunt of the prejudice of Germany and the Czech Republic and, finally, expulsion from their home near the Sudeten Mountains. Youth of the region, enamored of the kindred Moravian protagonist of the Leatherstocking Tales by James Fenimore Cooper, conjured dreams of the natural wonders of America. Hans was one of those youth. Hans's father Joseph left before Europe exploded into war, arriving in America with his young family in 1900. Hans was 13 years old, and his dreams expansive...

Some of you know some of Hans Kleiber's story. Others know his art, but not his life as a Forest Ranger. Hans tried to become a ranger when he was 17. That didn't quite work... The story behind the attempt, his hiring when he came of age, and his rush to the courthouse to become a citizen ( yes, Hans was an emigrant)... we'll have to tell you more about that story later. There's a horse, and a mountain, and a traveling judge...and he insisted on that pipe. Felt it gave him a little more gravitas...

Cousin Alice worked tirelessly for the suffrage movement, and took over her parents' magazine, Woman's Journal, keeping it published until 1931. Did she influence Hans to be an activist in his own right, or was it his work to do as a passionate naturalist and artist? (see below photo of a receipt signed by Susan B. Anthony and Alice Blackwell for NAWSA). Still hunting for more letters...

The work on the documentary has begun in earnest. The research has been fascinating. Here's a glimpse at a letter Hans wrote to cousin Alice. Filmmaker Edmond Allmond wondered exactly who that was. It was Alice Blackwell, an icon of the early women's' rights movement, daughter of Henry Blackwell and Lucy Stone. But why was their connection so deep? Cousins? The research into this fascinating story continues...
