OnePlus phones will no longer come with pre-installed Facebook-owned apps and services, as per a report. OnePlus had received criticism when it started pre-installing Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and other Facebook services on its phones a few months ago. A spokesperson for the company confirmed that starting from the recently launched OnePlus 8T, the phones will no longer have pre-installed Facebook apps and services, according to the report.

Citing a OnePlus spokesperson, a report by Input claims that the smartphone maker will no longer preload Facebook-owned apps and services. The spokesperson said that the only pre-installed third-party app on OnePlus phones would be Netflix, for enhancing HDR video playback.

OnePlus had faced backlash for including Facebook bloatware on the OnePlus Nord, OnePlus 8, and OnePlus 8 Pro, as reported by Android Police.

While users could uninstall the Facebook-owned apps such as Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook from their OnePlus devices, background Facebook services like Facebook Application Manager, Facebook Installer, and Facebook Notification Service, could only be disabled and not removed completely.

The company had reasoned that pre-installation of Facebook ensured better battery efficiency on Facebook. It had maintained that it would continue to install the Facebook apps and services on phones sold in Europe, India, and North America.

OnePlus fell short of confirming that it would never pre-install Facebook apps and services, but said that it would not do so in the foreseeable future, as per the report by Input. OnePlus declined to comment on how existing OnePlus Nord and OnePlus 8 series phones could uninstall the Facebook apps and services that came pre-installed. A source cited in the report said that there was no simple, user-friendly way to remove Facebook services off the OnePlus phones where it was already pre-installed, because removing them could disrupt a user's experience.

Apple seems to have started working on in-display Touch ID for iPhones. While the Cupertino giant has not yet provided any details around the new development, a tipster suggested the arrival of in-display Touch ID through a cryptic message posted on Twitter. Some earlier reports have also claimed that Apple was planning to bring its new iPhone models with an in-display Touch ID. However, the company just earlier this week unveiled the iPhone 12 family that retains Face ID.

The tipster who goes by pseudonym L0vetodream tweeted, “MESA uts for iPhone.” While the post did not provide much clarity, tipster Jon Prosser claimed that “MESA” was a reference to Touch ID and “uts” was the abbreviation for “under the screen.”

Considering the track records of both tipsters, it can be speculated that Apple might have started working on the new technology.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, in a note sent to investors last year, predicted that Apple would bring back Touch ID to iPhone models in 2021. Kuo mentioned that the 2021 iPhone models would feature both Face ID and in-display Touch ID.

Bloomberg also reported last year that Apple was developing its native in-screen fingerprint sensing technology. The publication, however, mentioned that it would be a part of 2020 iPhone models, which wasn't the case. A report by Dutch blog LetsGoDigital, citing a Credit Suisse presentation, also claimed that the high-end iPhone model this year would completely ditch Face ID and include an under-display Touch ID.

Apple is speculated to use a tweaked version of Qualcomm's 3D Sonic sensor to bring an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensing to its next-generation iPhone models. It could be limited to one model initially, while others may continue to use Face ID.

Introduced back in November 2017 with the launch of the iPhone X, Face ID has become a standalone system for biometric authentication on iPhones. Apple, however, brought back its Touch ID with the launch of the iPhone SE (2020) earlier this year.

Apple brought some updates to Face ID in the past. However, it did not announce any particular improvements to its proprietary technology while unveiling the iPhone 12 series earlier this week. Some people were expecting the company to move towards a Touch ID button as Face ID is not of use when people are wearing masks. Nevertheless, the Tim Cook-led company has not addressed their concerns yet.

Google Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G factory and OTA images have been published on the Android developers site for the first time. The phones were introduced earlier this month. Both the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G are not coming to the Indian market and are limited to 5G markets like Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Taiwan, the UK, and the US. The images, that have been published by Google, are meant for developers who constantly tinker with mods and skins.

Google's Android developers site has been updated to reflect OTA and factory images of the two new phones – Google Pixel 5 and Google Pixel 4a 5G. Pixel 5 has been given the hardware name ‘redfin' whereas the Pixel 4a 5G carries the name ‘bramble.' The OTA images and factory images for both the phones have been published for the very first time. The Pixel 5 has two links – one for KDDI network subscribers in Japan, and the other is for everyone else. There is only one link published for the Pixel 4a 5G.

As mentioned, these links are usually meant for developers who often do a lot of software tinkering. These default images are always a fall-back option for those developers who hit a roadblock in modified ROM development, or flashing. It isn't meant for regular smartphone users, who should stick to the regular over-the-air method of receiving updates.
