The city of Phoenix is changing the way bulk trash is collected. At city council’s Transportation, Infrastructure, and Planning (TIP) Subcommittee meeting last month, the Appointment-Based Bulk Trash system was presented. The new program will offer residents the ability to schedule their own bulk trash collection, rather than waiting for quarterly bulk trash pickup during the dates assigned to their area. Appointment-based bulk trash collection begins on September 30.

Under the current bulk trash program, Public Works lays out a collection schedule for the entire year for 13 different regions across the city, giving each region four designated collection periods annually. The appointment-based system will be replacing quarterly collection beginning on September 30. All bulk trash collection on or after that date must be scheduled online.

The Scottsdale Police Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the Scottsdale Police Department (SPD) and fostering stronger ties between law enforcement and the community, is launching several impactful initiatives.

“A strong police department is integral to the quality of life we enjoy in Scottsdale,” says Debbie Steinhauer, founder of the Scottsdale Police Foundation. “Through the foundation, we aim to fortify the foundation of our community by addressing the four pillars of our mission: youth, officer wellness, community engagement, and crime prevention.”

Driven by a desire to uplift the youth of Scottsdale, the foundation has collaborated closely with SPD to identify areas where additional support and resources are needed. One such initiative is “the closet” program, located at Coronado High School but serving the entirety of the Scottsdale school district. This program, led by Scottsdale Police Officer Alvin Pease in conjunction with social workers and teachers, provides essential resources to students in need, reinforcing the values of community support and engagement. Moreover, the currently open logo design contest, available to the children of Scottsdale School District, highlights the organization’s commitment to tailoring programs to the evolving needs of Scottsdale youth.

In a significant transaction, a sprawling 27-acre vacant parcel in a prime location of Paradise Valley changed hands on April 19, fetching a substantial sum of $42 million, as per public records. The sale marks a remarkable 600% increase from its previous sale of $6 million in 1997. However, it falls short of its listed price of $55 million, reflecting the sellers’ priority of preserving the land’s heritage over maximizing profit.

The parcel, recognized as the largest undeveloped land plot in Paradise Valley, carries a rich history tied to the estate of the late John T***s, former CEO of Dial Corp. and Greyhound Corp., who acquired the land years ago. Realtor Joan Levinson, representing T***s’ estate, emphasized the importance placed on maintaining the land’s integrity and legacy, leading to the rejection of multiple higher-priced offers in favor of a buyer willing to commit to deed restrictions.

If this summer is anything like the last, Arizona can expect to endure 55 days at or above 110 degrees, and when the season totals are released, it may be one of the driest monsoon periods. But your roof did its job keeping you out of the sun, right? Yes, but while you replace sunburned plants, you should check the health of your roof. Just as your air-conditioning works overtime in summer, so does your roof.

“I guarantee the heat this summer will destroy more roofs than people think,” says Pat Stapleton, president of Stapleton Roofing in Phoenix. “And when the rain hits, there are going to be a lot of people in a lot of trouble.”

A third-generation roofer, Stapleton started roofing out of high school and worked up to foreman, supervisor, and roof sales for the past 20 years. In 2010, he and his wife, Cindy, opened Stapleton Roofing “because we felt we could do a better job than most,” he says.

The most challenging part of starting the business, he says, was finding quality roofing crews that could follow his rules and regulations and place roofs how he wanted.
