Severe thund3rstorms desc3nd on Australia’s east coast as NSW faces flash flooding r!sk

Residents in New South Wales, along with some other east coast regions, are being w@rned to take extreme caution through the night as heavy thund3rstorms, rainfall and dam@ging hail lash the region.

Parts of the east coast have been h!t by heavy st0rms and rain through Thursday, with the eff3cts set to continue through the night and likely early Friday morning.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued several “severe thund3rstorm w@rnings” in the late afternoon, w@rning residents of the Sydney metropolitan along with those in inland central New South Wales to brace for dam@ging winds, heavy rainfall, and large hail.

St0rms begun forming in Sydney’s west around the Blue Mountains, Penrith and surrounding areas about 4pm, however thousands more across the city could be l@shed in the coming hours.

The State Emergency Service has advised the public to heed extreme c@ution through the night.

“Severe thund3rstorms across the state can cause flash flooding. When driving, use h@zard lights, pull over in heavy rain, and avoid flooded areas. Never drive through floodwater,” NSW SES posted on X.

In the last update by the Bureau of Meteorology about 5.45pm, the w@rning areas were extended to northeastern parts of the state in regions of North West Slopes and Plains, Central West Slopes and Plains, Hunter and Central Tablelands Forecast Districts.

Locations which may be aff3cted in this zone include Gunnedah, Coonabarabran, Baradine, Mullaley and Tambar Springs.

Heavy rain and st0rmy weather were also reported in Victoria and Tasmania earlier in the day, with some travellers saying on social media flight schedules had also been disr„pted.

“If you’re flying on the east coast of Australia this evening it’s about to get completely ch@otic,” one wrote.

“With thund3rstorms approaching Sydney and impacting arrivals and departures, Melbourne is also suff3ring disr„ptions.”

“Major thund3rstorms in Sydney. A major clusterf**k at Melbourne Airport. All the men in suits are drinking up. Oh well can’t do much but sit and wait,” another wrote.

Public transport in Sydney was also disr„pted by lightning str!kes, with reports of overhead train wiring dam@ge on the T2 and T5 western lines.

Although th„nder may look to ease within the day, intermittent st0rms and rains are likely to persist along the east coast over the coming week due to a moisture-laden easterly wind interacting with an upper-level trough.

Inland NSW is expected to face the br„nt of the wild weather.

W@rnings have been lifted for Sydney and Newcastle, however, BOM will provide a fresh update at 8.45pm.

Record s3xual har@ssment payout for Sydney jeweller Grew & Co after judge rules in favour of female employee

A Sydney jewellery shop and its owner have been ordered to pay more than $268,000 in dam@ges after being found to have s3xually har@ssed an employee.

A Sydney jewellery shop has been ordered to pay a record $140,000 in general dam@ges, plus further dam@ges and costs., who ran Ms Taylor’s c@se, said the decision set a record for the highest general dam@ges awarded in a s3xual har@ssment matter under the federal S3x Discr*mination Act (SDA) 1984.

“Too often, v!ctims are met with aggr3ssive behaviours when they complain to deter them from purs„ing their rights,” she said. “These behaviours exac3rbate the h@rm and hum!li@tion suff3red. The court has sanctioned such tactics by awarding additional dam@ges.”

Mr Taylor gave evidence that she felt extremely uncomf0rtable and laughed out of sh0ck. She said she did not complain at the time because Grew & Co did not have human resources and she f3ared l%sing her job if she complained to Mr Grew.

Justice Katzmann wrote in her judgment that the absence of a complaint about the sl@p at the time was not significant, noting “s3xual har@ssment is not%riously under-reported” and that Ms Taylor would have taken further umbrage at the inc!dent after Mr Grew declared feelings for her in early 2020.

“The sl@p on the b„ttock in July 2019 was certainly unwelcome. Not only did Ms Taylor give evidence to this eff3ct but Mr Grew’s apologies ind!cate that he realised it was,” Justice Katzmann wrote.

Five months later, the court heard, Mr Grew revisited the subject after driving Ms Taylor home on June 1, 2020. She again expressed she did not have romantic feelings for him and said he needed to move on.

Megan Griesel m„rder: Breakthrough as South African cops arr3st two men linked to br„tal sh%ting

Mpumalanga police have made a breakthrough with the arr3st of two men for the br„tal m„rder of Megan Griesel.

Police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli said the first susp3ct was arr3sted in Masoyi, outside White River, last Wednesday.

He said police followed up on leads and arr3sted the second susp3ct in Kanyamazane a day later.

"What is interesting about the second one is that he was reportedly found in possession of a f!re@rm with amm„nition during his arr3st," Mdhluli said.

The two men, both aged 27, appeared in court on Friday. The case was postponed to 7 November.

"Due to the sens!tivity and del!cacy of this case, the identities of the susp3cts are withheld to prevent a situation which may jeop@rdise the investigation," he said.

Griesel, 20, was k!ll3d when her car was peppered with b„llets as she unknowingly drove past the scene of a r%bbery at a petrol station in Lydenburg.

CCTV footage shared on social media showed a group of arm3d men j„mping off a white bakkie at the petrol station.

Mdhuli said the men held staff at g„npoint.

"It is also all3ged that the susp3cts detonated some expl%sives to gain access to the drop safe then took an undisclosed amount of cash as well as some ci******es."

The susp3cts are said to have then proceeded to a nearby shopping centre and pounced on another petrol station, where they st%le another undisclosed sum of money and ci******es.

"From there, it is said that they [susp3cts] moved and att@cked a liquor store belonging to a reputable supermarket in the same shopping complex.

"It transpired that the susp3cts f0rcefully gained entry through the main door and helped themselves to various items, including expensive beverages and some ci******es," Mdhuli said.

It was here that Griesel was sh0t and k!ll3d.

Mdhuli said police were working around the clock to ensure the arr3st of remaining susp3cts.

Minister d!stances herself from Suella Braverman comment that r0ugh sleeping is 'lifestyle choice'

Sky - A government minister has contr@dicted Suella Braverman's description of r0ugh sleeping as a "lifestyle choice", saying she "wouldn't necessarily use that language".

Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho appeared to be at odds with the home secretary, who has faced a backl@sh for describing r0ugh sleeping as a "lifestyle choice" as she outlined her desire to r3strict the use of tents by homel3ss people in UK towns and cities.

Ms Braverman said many of those who sleep in tents are "from abroad" and insisted there was no need given the alternatives and support available to r0ugh sleepers.

Asked by Kay Burley whether she agreed with the home secretary's comments, Ms Coutinho revealed she used to work with people who were homel3ss and that she "wouldn't necessarily use the language of 'lifestyle choice' as the reasons for homel3ssness are "complex and var!ed".

Ms Coutinho said Ms Braverman had in her comments "disting„ished that a lot of people who end up in that position are str„ggling, for example, with add!ction issues".

"And she wasn't talking about those people," she added.

"I think the most important thing is that for all of those people, what we want is for them to have a warm home, a roof over their heads.

"Because ultimately sleeping on the streets, becoming entr3nched in that lifestyle, that's no life for anyone."

Pressed on whether Ms Braverman "misspoke", the energy secretary replied: "So I think she was talking about different things.

"She acknowledged that there are people who just, you know, they need our compassion. They're str„ggling with things like add!ction. They need help and support. And that's exactly what the plans are, by the way.

"But she also talked about people, I think, who are nuis@nce b3gging who are working in organised groups.

"And I think it's right that we make sure that we're getting people off the streets into safe accommodation and also making sure that our neighbourhoods feel safe for people as well."

Daylesford pub cr@sh: Victorian community reels over d3aths of two children and three adults

Police say a nine-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy, along with two of their parents, are among the five k!ll3d.

A 38-year-old man from Tarneit and his 11-year-old son were k!ll3d. The man’s wife, a 36-year-old woman, and a second son, aged six, were inj„red.

Police on Monday confirmed among the inj„red was an 11-month-old baby, who was transferred to the Royal Children’s hospital via the Ballarat Base hospital. The investigation is in its “infancy”, police said on Monday.

They expect to interview the driver, a 66-year-old Mount Macedon man on Tuesday. The man had been breath tested following the cr@sh and had no blood alc%hol in his system, police said.

The Victorian police chief commissioner, Shane Patton, paid tribute to the first responders on the scene on Monday morning, saying they would carry the scene with them for “many years”.“

“We wish to express our deepest symp@thy for those who have passed away, those inj„red, their families and everyone aff3cted by this terr!ble tr@gedy,” he said in a recorded statement.

It’s one of the most confr0nting scenes, I’ve been told, that experienced officers have been to.”Patton said the families were “visitors just going about their everyday life, just enjoying themselves on a beautiful Sunday afternoon”.

Police petrol b%mbed in Edinburgh Bonf!re Night d'sorder

About 50 young people have cl@shed with r!ot police in Edinburgh with f!reworks and petrol b%mbs being thrown directly at officers.

Video footage from the Niddrie area of the city showed officers in r!ot gear standing in a line while youths threw expl%sives at their feet.

Police were called to the Hay Avenue area at 16:40 GMT after reports of "ant!social use of f!reworks".

Images posted on social media showed bystanders watching the viol3nce.

The videos showed the police b%mb@rded with expl%sives while teenagers gathered on a green, with some filming it.

Police Scotland said it had faced "unprec3dented levels of viol3nce" while policing Bonfire Night d'sorder.

About 50 youths within a larger group of youths and adults were responsible for directing f!reworks at vehicles and buildings before their behaviour esc@lated when officers arrived, the police said.

A statement said officers were purs„ing a number of individuals who they believe were providing youths with f!reworks and petrol b%mbs to target police in the Niddrie area.

The f0rce said while only a small number of arr3sts had been made on the night, as a result of the "significant chall3nges" officers f@ced, subst@ntial evidence had been gathered and it was anticipated further arr3sts would take place in the coming days.

It added two police vehicles were dam@ged in Dundee after being str„ck with bricks while in Glasgow police received a report of two groups of youths throwing f!reworks at one another.

Eight officers sust@ined m!nor inj„ries in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Mairs, gold commander of Operation Moonbeam, said a minority of individuals had been responsible for "unacc@ptable and frankly, disg„sting level of d'sorder that left communities al@rmed and police officers inj„red".

He said the viol3nt nature of the d!sorder in Niddrie was "extr3mely conc3rning" - "not least because because it is believed young people were being actively encouraged and co-ordinated by adults to target officers while they carried out their duties".

City of Edinburgh Council leader Cammy Day said he was "appalled" by the scenes in Niddrie.

He said: "This r3ckless behaviour end@ngers lives and like the majority of people in the community I share in their d!smay and ups3t at this disgr@ceful behaviour."

Scottish Conservative justice spokesman Russell Findlay said: "Such att@cks on police officers are cowardly, r3ckless and dang3rous. Police Scotland need suff!cient resources to t@ckle these th„gs."

In 2018, Police Scotland set up Operation Moonbeam to t@ckle Bonfire Night d!sorder.

Last year, a police vehicle was hit by a Molotov cocktail in Niddrie, and motorbike g@ngs raced through the area while f!reworks were l0bbed at the ground.

On Halloween last week, police were called to the Kirkton area of Dundee after youths set off f!reworks and lit an ill3gal bonf!re.

Police l0cked in stand-off with susp3cted man 'holding four-year-old host@ge' at Hamburg airport

An airport in Germany remains closed as police deal with a host@ge situation after a susp3cted man with a child r@mmed a vehicle through a s3curity gate.

Flights in and out of Hamburg were susp3nded and passengers urged not to travel as the drama unfolded on Saturday evening when a car cr@shed through a barrier onto the site, sp@rking a major s3curity response.

The police would not confirm earlier statements that the man had fir3d sh%ts.

He was also said to have thrown b„rning bottles out of the vehicle.

Footage from the site showed em3rgency services dealing with two small f!res.

The vehicle with the 35-year-old and four-year-old girl was currently parked under a Turkish Airlines plane, police said, and a large number of officers were at the scene.

The facility remains closed with flights susp3nded and passengers have been urged not to travel to the airport.

In a post on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, the police said: "We must currently assume that he is in possession of a live f!re@rm and possibly also expl%sive dev!ces of an unknown type."

Negot!ators are in contact with the person in the car and communicating through a translator in Turkish, they said.

The authorities said their main priority was the protection of the child, who was physically OK based on their current information.

Police said the man's wife had previously contacted them about a possible child abd„ction.

The airport authorities said 286 flights with around 34,500 passengers had been scheduled for Sunday.

Yorkshire pr!son officer tells of 'horr3ndous' viol3nce in ja!ls

BBC - A former pr!son officer has said viol3nce behind b@rs left him feeling he was "f!ght!ng for his life".

The officer described "horr3ndous" ass@ults on staff, viol3nce between pris0ners and self-h@rm.

Pr!son inspectors have expressed concerns about overcrowding, with the pr!son population increasing by 8% to 88,225 over the last year.

The Pr!son Service said it had inv3sted ÂŁ100m in pr'son security and was recru!ting more staff.

The pr!son officer, who wished to remain anonymous, said that sometimes one officer was left to supervise up to 30 pr!soners, with r!val g@ngs f*ght!ng a "t„rf w@r" inside the ja!l.

He told the BBC's Politics North programme: "They're not inn0cent people, you know they've all been conv!cted of off3nces.

"And they didn't care at the time if it was a female pr!son officer. I've seen them get mass!vely h„rt, br0ken jaws, all that sort of thing, in headlo0ks, being p„nched."

He added: "There is al@rm systems around the pr'sons, but if the pr!son hasn't got the staff available to respond to that, then that's dang3rous.

"You're on your own and you feel like you're f*ght!ng for your life."

Ministry of Justice figures from April 2022 to March 2023 show pr!soner-on-pr!soner ass@ults r„nning at 185 per 1,000 pr!soners, with 82 ass@ults on staff per 1,000 pr!soners.

Over the same period there were 733 inc!dents of self-h@rm per 1,000 pr!soners and a total of 88 d3aths.

Charlie Taylor, Chief Inspector of Pr!sons for England and Wales, said he was "en%rmously concerned about what we are seeing in many of the ja!ls we go to".

"Our probl3m is there are too many people for the number of places in pr!son," he said.

"Ultimately the amount we send to pr!son is for the courts and for ministers to decide, but as far as we're concerned pr!sons are overcr0wded and that means there're not able to perform their reh@bilitative function and that leads to a d@nger that there will be more cr!me.

"People who could be helped are not being helped and they will go back and cause h@voc in their communities."

Last month, Justice Secretary Alex Chalk announced pr!sons would be allowed to release some "less ser'ous off3nders" on prob@tion early to relieve overcr0wding.

A Pr!son Service spokesperson said: "Pr!son officers work day-in, day-out, to rehab!litate off3nders and protect the public so it's vital they have the tools to do their jobs and keep them safe.

"That's why we've invested ÂŁ100m in pr!son security - including X-ray body scanners and new body-worn cameras."

They added: "We are also doing more than ever to attract and retain the best staff, including boosting salaries, launching our first ever nationwide recruitment campaign and providing extensive m3ntal health support."

C%rrupt' cop ja!led for t!pping off pal to EncroChat dr@gnet

A British court has s3ntenced a "C%rrupt" cop to almost four years behind bars for t!pping off a friend that officers had compr%mised the EncroChat encr„pted messaging app network.

Once they'd bust3d into the network's servers, cops used that access to collect conversations and other data from EncroChat handsets and use this information to make arr3sts, with the NCA doing the legwork in the UK. To date, British law enforcement has arr3sted 3,147 susp3cts and conv!cted 1,240 of those based on intel harv3sted from EncroChat, according to the Crown Pros3cution Service.

According to the NCA, Mottram told Jonathan Kay, 39, the police were monitoring people's encr„pted EncroChat conversations, and t!pped him off that the cops had intel on him presumably from his use of the app.
