Our newest article on the Road to DAPL. In this article, I trace the development of the Pipeline, and the process that led up to the protest. In it, I address a few myths as well. My goal was to keep it as accurate as possible.
The two main misconceptions I addressed was that while the Pipeline had a possible route near Bismarck, it was dismissed by the Corps because of the difficulty it would have posed to pass it. It was never something that the people in Bismarck had an effect on.
The second misconception is about the Fort Laramie Treaties. Often, it was claimed that two treaties were being invoked, the Treaty of 1851 and the Treaty of 1868. However, such an argument didn't work as the Treaty of 1851 was superseded by the Treaty of 1868, making the former treaty void. The second treaty is still in effect.
