Lamya Essemlali
Do not let size distract you, the diminutive French-Moroccan is the true definition of an absolute power house who will let nothing stand in the way of her willingness to risk it all for the sake of protecting the ocean and its inhabitants.
In 2005, Lamya first met Captain Paul Watson at a conference. It was an encounter that inspired her to join a ship headed for Antarctica to take direct action against the Japanese whaling ships during the Whale Wars campaign led by the Captain. During the voyage, a situation in which she found herself literally risking her life to save a whale when a Japanese ship directly targeted the ship she was aboard before turning away at the last minute. It was an event that changed her forever.
“That was such a key moment for me,” recalls Lamya. “For me, in that moment, I felt fear but I never felt any regret,” Lamya remembers. “I was in the right place and there was no other place that I wanted to be.”
The Environmental Scientist returned to France and the following year, was inspired to co-found Sea Shepherd France. Lamya became (and remains) its President in 2008.
Through her enduring passion and drive, Sea Shepherd France has grown to be one of the biggest national entities of the global non-profit*.
Lamya has led campaigns for the protection of the ocean and marine life in The Mediterranean Sea, The Faroe Islands, Mayotte and Indian Ocean targeting the conservation of bluefin tuna, dolphins, pilot whales, sea cucumbers, turtles and sharks.
Her focus is currently targeting dolphin bycatch by French commercial fishing companies – an officially illegal activity with Lamya lobbying the French Government to enforce their own laws.
*Sea Shepherd France has recently committed to working alongside and supporting The Captain Paul Watson Foundation.
